Una leyenda africana para reflexionar sobre la soberbia:

Una preciosa historia con valores para niños
La ‘leyenda del baobab’ es una leyenda africana con valores que intenta explicar por qué este árbol es tan extraño. Parece que su copa fueran raíces. La historia explica que todo surgió por un ataque de soberbia y vanidad de este árbol africano. Una leyenda que nos ayuda a reflexionar sobre este sentimiento tan negativo.

Hace mucho, pero que mucho tiempo, en la Sabana africana existían hermosos árboles y muy frondosos. Algunos muy altos, como el baobab. Este árbol era considerado por todos como el más bello. Sus hojas grandes y brillantes llamaban muchísimo la atención. Su tronco estilizado y alto le ayudaba a observar el mundo desde las alturas. Y su copa estaba plagado de hermosas y olorosas flores.

De hecho, los dioses, embelesados por su belleza, decidieron concederle el don de la longevidad. Así, el baobab podía vivir más años que ningún otro árbol. Su tronco sería más alto y ancho gracias a ese tiempo extra. Pero este árbol tenía un defecto: su vanidad y soberbia.


No contento con ser el árbol más hermoso y grande, el baobab quería más y más. Quería ser más alto y más grande. Quería rozar el cielo con sus ramas. Tanto es así, que desafió hasta a los dioses:

– ¡Miradme bien, dioses del cielo, porque llegaré hasta donde estáis y seré como vosotros.

Y el baobab creció y creció mucho más. Pero al crecer, sus ramas comenzaron a tapar con su sombra a otros árboles, y sus raíces absorbían todo el agua, dejando al resto de árboles moribundos. Uno a uno, fueron muriendo, incapaces de conseguir ni un rayito de sol, ni un poquito de agua, por culpa del baobab.

Los dioses, enfadados con la prepotencia y la poca empatía del baobab, decidieron castigarlo. Así, arrancaron todos los baobab de la tierra y les dieron la vuelta. De esta forma, el baobab crecería con la copa enterrada en la arena y las raíces al aire. Y es por eso que a partir de entonces el baobab tiene esa forma tan extraña.

Con esta leyenda, podrás trabajar con tu hijo todos estos valores:

– La humildad como un valor esencial e indispensable.

– Por qué es necesaria la empatía.

– Cómo evitar la soberbia.

Reflexiones sobre la leyenda del baobab para niños y mayores
Además de ofrecernos una interesante explicación a por qué el árbol de baobab es tan extraño, esta leyenda africana nos invita a reflexionar sobre todos estos puntos:

– La soberbia te hará perder la razón: La prepotencia, ese sentimiento que te puede hacer sentir superior a otros, puede llevarte por mal camino hacia la soberbia y la vanidad. Y la soberbia no solo hace daño a otros, sino que al final, terminará por hacerte daño a ti mismo.


– Nunca te bajes de la silla de la humildad: La humildad no te coloca en un trono, sino en una simple silla de madera, desde la que verás todo con una perspectiva más certera. La humildad consiste en valorarte y valorar quién eres pero advertirte al mismo tiempo de tus defectos que hacen que seas humano y real. La perfección no existe, y por tanto, nadie es más que otros, porque todos tienen defectos y virtudes.

– No desafíes a los más poderosos porque al final saldrás perdiendo: Puede que te sientas invencible, pero si pierdes el norte y te enfrentas, como hizo Don Quijote, con unos molinos que para él eran gigantes, terminarás perdiendo la batalla. La vanidad y la soberbia distorsionan la realidad y te hacen cometer locuras.

– No olvides sentir empatía hacia el resto: El baobab solo pensaba en él. Quería ser el más alto, el más fuerte y el más hermoso. Y en su camino hacia este objetivo comenzó a dañar a otros árboles. Y lo hizo, por su falta de empatía. Era incapaz de darse cuenta de que los otros árboles sufrían, porque solo podía pensar en sí mismo. El egoísmo impide desarrollar la empatía.
