In celebration of Tunga, Leyte's 75th anniversary, Balay Salida Studios helped produce a short film for Mayor Reinbert Costello documenting the municipality's achievements during his term.

Despite being the smallest municipality in the province, Tunga is no longer behind economically or in its infrastructure compared to its neighboring municipalities.

In this special edition of Balikbayan Talk, we celebrate the inspiring journey of Joy Cotoner, a proud daughter of Tunga, Leyte, who now holds multiple prestigious titles, including Ms. Galaxy Toronto 2024, Mrs. Canada Universe 2023, and Mrs. Southern Ontario 2023.

Even with her incredible achievements abroad, Joy's heart remains connected to her hometown. Her story is a testament to the strength and grace of Tunganons, reminding us all that no matter how far we go, Leyte will always be the place we call home.

Did you know that Tunga got its name from the Waray word "tunga," meaning "half"?

It was once a key trading stop halfway between Ormoc, Tacloban, Carigara, and Jaro. Over time, the name stuck, and the community embraced it.

On March 4, 1948, the association Pag-Urosa Han Mga Tungan-on was formed to push for Tunga’s independence from Barugo. Thanks to their efforts, led by the eventual mayor Domingo A. Ponferrada, President Elpidio Quirino issued Executive Order No. 266, making Tunga a municipality on September 24, 1949.

In Tunga, Leyte, the Marsh Grass Shrimp, or "Tamyok," is a local delicacy enjoyed by locals for generations. After harmful harvests threatened the shrimp, the community prayed to Sr. Sto. Niño, and a rainstorm washed away the destructive tools. Since then, locals have embraced responsible practices to protect the Tamyok.

THE OFFICIAL LOGO FOR THE 80TH LEYTE GULF LANDINGS COMMEMORATION

With the theme: "Bayani ng Kahapon, Dakilang Huwaran ng mga Kabataan Ngayon" (Yesterday's Heroes, Today's Inspiration for the New Generation), we proudly present the logo for the 80th Leyte Gulf Landings Anniversary, a tribute to the courage and sacrifices that shaped our nation’s history.

The 8 rays of the sun symbolize the sunrise over the Leyte Gulf, representing hope and new beginnings in Eastern Visayas.
The Boy Scout signifies the Signal Day in Tolosa, highlighting the pivotal role of local youth during the war.
The statue of General Douglas MacArthur captures the historic moment of his return, symbolizing the liberation of the Philippines.
A Filipino soldier stands as a symbol of the bravery of Filipino soldiers during World War II, honoring their invaluable contribution to our freedom.

The waves in the logo represent the iconic landing sites:

The elusive tarsiers have once again been spotted in Barangay Astorga and Barangay Banawang! 🐾 These incredible creatures continue to thrive in some areas in Tunga, reminding us of the importance of preserving their natural habitat, with the help of Tunga CLUP technical working group.
