Forged in 2003, the Downhill Derelicts are an International Alpine Fraternity focused on creating a positive impact on our members and the alpine community.
The Downhill Derelicts are an international free-riding group (skiers and boarders welcome) founded in 2002 by two friends who journeyed to Whistler, BC for a four day spring ski trip. Twenty-two years later, the group is made up of over 70 members who come together each year from all over the world to enjoy the wondrous nature, people, and reignite their souls in the shadows of the mountains of W
histler-Blackcomb. In 2017, the Downhill Derelicts set forth with a mission to give back to the Whistler community that has welcomed them by forming a grassroots fundraising initiative for the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program (WASP). Together with the support of family, friends, locals, and the occasional stranger, the group has raised over $250,000 for WASP, funding programs for veterans and first responders living with PTSD, as well as adults and children of various physical and mental abilities.

The 2024 class of the Downhill Derelicts just wrapped up their 22nd annual trip to Whistler and what a week it was. Two days of knee high powder followed by three bluebird days of early Spring skiing. And with the help of our many donors, made up family, friends, colleagues and strangers moved by our mission of awareness for adaptive sports, we raised $80,000 for the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program.

A huge thanks to all of our donors thus far. We've almost hit 20% of our total event goal with a lot of guys still just getting started.
We were really excited to announce to the group this week that two-time Paralympian medalist, world record holder, and avid blind skier Donovan Tildesley will be our keynote at our opening ceremonies in Whistler on March 10th. He'll be sharing how adaptive sports programs impacted his journey and to help us all connect deeper with the amazing individuals behind these programs.
After speaking with Donovan this past weekend and learning about him and his start into competitive swimming at the age of nine, and then watching the video below and hearing him talk about skiing, I am so amped to get to know him better and hoping we get to make some turns together. His passion for riding mountains sounds like every other Downhill Derelict I know.
Again, thank you all. It is because of YOUR support of our event that together we can make these programs possible. We're looking forward to helping the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program identify that next kid who could be the next Donovan. We are extremely excited to announce that in conjunction with our 2024 Today We Ride fundraiser for the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program, we have formed our own US-based non-profit grant making organization, the Downhill Derelicts Foundation. Through our own foundation we can work more directly with the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program and other adaptive programs throughout North America, having a bigger impact in breaking down the physical and financial barriers to sport access for those of varying abilities.

Who are we? We are a young at soul, big hearted, free spirited group of mountain riders. A few ex-racers, a few "just learned to ride a few years ago," and everywhere in between. This group began making an annual trip to Whistler BC 23 years ago, forged friendships that now run deeper than Marianas Trench, and try to leave behind a little goodwill and a message; Every avalanche (of good) starts with a single snowflake. We are the Downhill Derelicts. And unlike bears, if you see us in the wild, you CAN pet us.

What a trip! The 2023 trip had 38 total Derericts from Germany, US, and Canada. Everyone arrived in on time. Powder days on Monday and Tuesday with 8” and 6” respectively, then three bluebird days. We had some of the best conditions ever for the Peak2Peak but it was the first year there was no GMC Race Centre GS course.

The 2023 Downhill Derelict class set a new high bar. In just two weeks time, with the support of many friends, family, colleagues, and a few generous strangers (now friends), we raised $60,100 for the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program.

Our Today We Ride event funds specialized programming for those living with limb differences, mental disabilities, and soldiers and first responders living with PTSD to engage in the healing power of sport at the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program.

The Dog Tag Tales and Derelict Shenanigans
The Downhill Derelict dog tag is a gift issued to each member accepted into the global ski fraternity. Once membership is accepted, Derelicts are subject to the 'Derelict Dog Tag Code' which states that a Derelict (the tagger) can challenge another Derelict (the tagee) who they think does not have their dog tag on their person. The tagee has 5 mins to present their tags or else they buy the tagger a drink of choice. However, if the tagee presents their tag, then the tagger must buy the tagee with a drink of their choice. With risk comes reward...and penalty.
