I am Dutch, living in France and speaking to you in English so everyone is capable to understand. I love to share my passion for the outdoors and my wonderful backyard with you. In the winter I am organising awesome snowshoe adventures in the winter wonderland of Samoëns. As a French qualified ‘Accompagnateur en Montagnes’ I am allowed to lead you around on snowshoes in the winter and on hikingboo

Today wasn’t to shabby …

In 2 days time we ticked of the mountains big 5 + 1 bonus animal! Yesterday we spotted loads of Mouflons and Chamois and an eagle. Today we had a bearded volture (Gypaète Barbu) circling above our heads, we saw some roo deer and spotted a Snowshoe hare (which is pretty rare)

Remember that:

The bigger the mission is and the more serious it gets, the more it’s important to do some pre planning

Always be willing to change the plan if the conditions, terrain or the human factor ‘asks’ for it; is there a plan B ?!

Check the avi bulletin when you go into the backcountry

Bring your (holy) safety-trinity and make sure how to use it

Be aware of slope angles above 30 degrees
and aim for the safest itinery possible.

Stay safe guys, but don’t be afraid to enjoy some fresh snow! 🤙

What an adventure it has been; 4 days of hiking and snowshoeing from hut to hut; descending green south faces on boots and climbing snowy north faces on snowshoes.

Last week was green, but this week even greener. But if you come for adventure and accept the (snow) conditions as they are right now, you will have an unforgettable time! It looks like this will be the new normal, so we better adapt and make the most of it, don’t you think?

Forget about renovating chalets and farm houses; renovating old, collapsing igloo’s is the latest thing!

It is mid-January, yet when I look outside, I see a very green garden and trees without any snow cover. Usually, we (and most of us) share nice images on social media, whether we genuinely like the weather or pretend to. Unfortunately, we all know that reality is often a bit different. Today we left to find some snow, but got back within an hour because of pi***ng rain…

Yes, the skiing has been pretty good so far this year, thanks to North-facing slopes, snow cannons, and piste bashers. And yes, we’ve had some great days snowshoeing higher up the mountain. However, it’s now the second year in a row that the valley is completely green mid-January. Last year, the ski area even closed, but luckily, this year, the December dump brought enough snow for skiing higher up, and it’s green ‘only’ up to 1500m on the south face.

Yesterday, it rained up to 2500m; this weekend, the temperature drops to minus 13, and next week it will go up to +12 again. Meanwhile, in Holland and in the UK, people are building snowmen and practicing cross-country skiing.

Is this the new normal we have to get used to…?!

Does snowshoeing reduce your (wintersports) footprint?

Today I was taking part in a report for Dutch television about climate change and the future of skiing and winter tourism, called ‘De Kwestie’.

Today the subject was well illustrated; rain and mild temperatures (which is not unusual in December though), so we had to go high to get some snowy shots.

So what is your opinion on this subject; Do you hear rumors about ski shame and are there people in your area who give up their ski holiday to act more sustainable?
