Another weekend, another fantastic tour!

We had the pleasure of showing these friends from Norway around central Munich before they headed off to a concert. A day of running, sightseeing and music. What better way to spend a Saturday?

Thank you for joining us on a tour!

Tonight, Munich’s Allianz Arena hosts the first semi-final of the UEFA European Football Championship 🇪🇸🇫🇷

The arena is famous for being the home of Bayern Munich since 2005. But did you know that it was the first football stadium in the world to have a full colour-changing exterior?

The ETFE plastic inflatable panels are actually see-through and only look white from a distance. The panels are lit up in different colours for various occasions, such as red for Bayern Munich home games and multi-coloured for the European Championship, as seen in our photos!

Organise a sight running tour in one of Munich's quieter neighbourhoods, around the trade fair and surrounding residential areas? Challenge accepted!

On our recent group tour for Bio-Europe, little did our runners know that the seemingly unremarkable Messestadt was Munich's international airport until 1992. We crafted a route that unveiled the hidden traces of this aviation history while also including an energising morning run through Riemer Park. Our guests were pleasantly surprised - it's easy to miss the layers of history beneath the surface, but that's where our local insight makes all the difference.

To our intrepid runners, thanks for joining us on this tour!

It was a great pleasure to hold our first conference run in Munich for Bio-Europe. A resilient bunch of around 40 runners joined us for early morning runs at two different locations in Munich.

Undeterred by the cold and dark morning, these runners joined our local guides for a relaxed run along the river Isar and through pretty Haidhausen. More than just a run, it was a chance for networking and having a chat.

Thank you for choosing to run with us!

This weekend we swapped our running shoes for our dancing shoes at the annual Kocherlball 💃🕺

This ball takes place once a year at the Chinese Tower Beer Garden with traditional Bavarian music and dancing from 6am to 10am.

The Kocherlball tradition originated in the 19th-century when household staff (referred to back then as Kocherl) would meet every Sunday morning in summer before starting work to dance at the Chinese Tower. The event was sadly banned in 1904 for “lack of morality” but then reinstated as an annual event in 1989.

Today the event is free and open to everyone. If you want to take part next year, remember to get there early to find a table (we were there at 4am!)

How was your weekend?

Some long run inspiration for the weekend!

As you know, we're big street art fans, so we were thrilled to hear that Invader was here finally invaded Munich.

Invader is a French street artist who "invades" cities around the world by leaving ceramic mosaics citywide. Often Invader's works depict characters from arcade games such as Space Invaders or Pacman, although there are many other designs to look out for.

We've been fans for a while so we have Invader's app, which allows us to record mosaic's we've found on our travels, check if they're genuine, and find out how many more there are to find in a particular city.

You also win points for every Invader found, so last weekend we decided to gamify our long run and find as many as we could!

Facts about the route:

Start/End: Sendlinger Tor U-Bahn
Distance: 12.5km
Number of Invaders: 9 of 18

Let us know what you think if you give the route a go!

This week we were getting some last 2022 miles in on a tour with this lovely family from the US. They’re on a whirlwind roadtrip around Germany, so our 10K Heart of Munich City Tour was perfect to stretch their legs and see the city in amongst a packed schedule.

To bring luck for 2023, we made sure to stop to rub the bronze lions guarding the entrance to the Residenz 😉

Have you been to Munich’s Viktualienmarkt? The daily food market since 1807, today there are over 140 stalls selling everything from fruit and vegetables, meat and cheeses to flowers and spices. We also think there are some great places to stop for lunch!

But do you know where the name Viktualienmarkt (Victuals Market) comes from? Originally the food market was simply called the Green Market or Market Place. However, in 19th-century Munich it was fashionable to translate place names into latin to sound more cultured - hence Victuals Market for Food Market.

We pass through the market on all our tours covering Munich’s old town. Why not join us for one? 👇

UFO spotted in the Museum District on one of our tours this week! 🛸👽

Thankfully, we didn’t come across any aliens because this is actually a Futuro House from 1968, designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen.

The Futuro Houses were intended to be ski huts and holiday homes, made from fibreglass-reinforced polyester plastic. However the design was perhaps too avant-garde (even for the 1960s!) and fewer than 100 were made, of which only around 60 remain worldwide.

Indeed, the design seems more like a work of modern art. So it’s appropriate that you’ll find Munich’s Futuro House next to the entrance of the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Have you seen what is the biggest mural in Munich?

This fantastic work by is dedicated to the revolutionaries who had a hand in founding the free state of Bavaria in 1918. Painted on the wall of a former electricity substation in Obergiesing, the mural took around 6 weeks to complete.

Time for a race recap from the Generali Munich Marathon just over a week ago on the 9th October.

This is the largest running event in Munich, with over 20,000 runners taking part in the marathon, marathon relay, half marathon and 10K races.

The marathon follows a pretty flat single loop through the city, taking in many of Munich‘s sights including the English Garden, Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt, Odeonsplatz, and Königsplatz. The highlight of the course, though, is starting and finishing on the track of the 1972 Olympic Stadium, making everyone feel like a running legend! There were lots of people out supporting in the city centre and some cool bands playing en-route.

However, we will be honest and say that kilometers 22 to 34 can be pretty boring. There‘s not much to see here along the course and there are a lot fewer spectators.

We thought that the timing of the races was well thought-out given the varying speeds of the runners. In particular, the half marathon started in the English Garden at 12.35pm to finish in the stadium after most marathon runners.

Like the start and finish, the race expo is in the stadium, so it is easy to pick up starting numbers. The expo itself, however, was surprisingly small so after a few photos of the stadium itself there wasn‘t much to see.

The stadium is easily reached by public transport with the ticket for the Sunday is included in the entry fee. Dropping off and collecting bags in the stadium was pretty straightforward. For the half, the bag drop was easy to get to on the way to start. So overall a relatively stress-free experience from the logistical side of things.

At the end all finishers received a nice medal and a poncho to keep warm, which was a great idea. However, you do have to walk up a lot of stairs after the marathon to exit the stadium…

Overall we think this is a pretty good mid-size marathon and we‘ll definitely be taking part again.

Thank you to John for choosing for a 21K sightrunning tour around Munich. And a big congratulations to our new guide Andrea on her first sightrunning tour!

Andrea helped John tick off another weekly long run in his marathon training plan. He wanted to concentrate on his running, so Andrea accompanied him at his planned pace, while showing the sights “on the run” without stopping.

A private running tour is the perfect option if you’re training for a race while on holiday. With your local guide, there’s no need to stop and check the route, we go at the pace you need to, and the stops are up you.

So why not give a running tour a go?

24/09/2022

It’s been a busy week for Go! Running Tours Munich, with our guides running tours as well as taking part in their own events. So our race report from last weekend’s Tegernseelauf took a little while…

The Tegernseelauf is a half marathon around lake Tegernsee, about an hour south of Munich. There’s also a 10K race, which is 5K out and back. This is a popular local race, known for its beautiful mountain and lake views. The course is quite hilly, though, we measured 111m ascent over the 21K.

We had a great time in spite of the wind and rain (not many mountain views for us unfortunately!), finding the event to be on the whole well organised and the course to be really nice.

We mostly ran on the road, but there were a few nice gravel trails thrown in for good measure. The course was also well chosen to be able to fly down the last hill to the finish. And, finally, since the start and finish lines were the same, the course made a perfect loop on strava, which we found to be oddly satisfying.

We could pick up our starting numbers in Munich and the event was easily reachable by public transport and by car. We liked that the event offered an 8€ return ticket for the train. Parking was well indicated and we received a map by e-mail the day before with the location of the car parks. So we were pretty relaxed getting to the starting line.

Nonetheless, we’re not sure how we feel about having to pay an extra 6€ for a medal, given the starting fee of 52€.

Definitely an event to take part in again!

Big shout out to .masse for joining us on a wet and windy Monday morning for a sightrunning tour through the heart of Munich. Even the surfers didn’t want to brave the weather, and there is always someone surfing 😂

It was a pleasure running with you Colleen!

What better way to start the week, or a holiday for that matter, than with a running tour?

Go! Running Tours Munich is celebrating the opening of Oktoberfest today!

🍻🍻🍻

We started off with an Oktoberfest-themed Parkrun, where it was great to see so many runners getting their Lederhose or Dirndl PB in traditional dress.

We then headed over to the Theresienwiese to watch the traditional parade of the breweries, led by the Münchener Kindl.

O’zapft is!**

Today marks the start of the 187th Oktoberfest. The tradition dates back to 17th October 1810, when a horse race was held to celebrate the marriage of King Ludwig I to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The locals had so much fun, they decided to repeat the celebration every year! Over time, a fun fair and beer tents were added, and the festival was moved forward to September for better weather. Now Oktoberfest is the largest beer festival in the world, welcoming over 6 million visitors over 16 days!

**Bavarian for “It’s been tapped”. The mayor of Munich declares this when he taps the first barrel of beer at 12pm on the first day of Oktoberfest.
