The remnants of Moroccan power can still be discovered on a road trip through the Ounila Valley. The decaying homes of Telouet Kasbah and Tamdaght Kasbah show just how prosperous the caravan route was to this part of the country.

Carving its way from the high Atlas Mountains to the barren plains just north of the Sahara Desert, the Ounila river has transformed the landscape. A rich variety of green crops line the valley floor, contrasting with the rusty red rock of the canyon-like walls.

Aït Benhaddou is a fortified town on the banks of the Ounila River. Built from local mud bricks, it’s one of the best places in Morocco for a thoroughly captivating sunset.

Having been partially rebuilt as a set for iconic films such as Gladiator, Jewel in the Nile and Jesus of Nazareth, it’s not an authentic look at rural Morocco life. But exploring in the late afternoon is an experience worth grabbing.

Life in Marrakech is lived on the street. Narrow alleyways are lined with endless rows of stallholders selling handmade lanterns, colourful embroidered fabric and tacky tourist souvenirs.

Just strolling around the central souks in the heart of the medina is an experience worth savouring. Our highlights were the edgy jewellery in Souk des Bijoutiers, craftsmen hammering out metal pots in Souk Haddadine, wool dying in Souk des Teinturiers and leather in Souk Cherratine. Read about them all in our favourite things to do in Marrakech.

Begin with a stroll through the box hedge symmetry and manicured gardens of the Jardin du Palais Royal. It’s surrounded by some of the most beautiful arcades in Paris including Galerie de Montpensier and Galerie Beaujolais. The palace is closed to the public, however, the polka dot art installation is a popular photo spot in Paris.

Exiting the bookstore, Notre Dame rises up in front of you. It’s been closed since the tragic fire in April 2019, and it’s not expected to reopen for another 5 years. You can visit the nearby tourist office and pay your respects or leave a donation for the rebuild. Stop for an excellent ice cream at Berthillon – one of the best ice cream shops in Paris, then head over the river to the impressive Hotel du Ville.

Next, head back onto the left bank of the Seine to the Latin Quarter stopping at Shakespeare & Company bookstore. It’s a small but rambling store with old books crammed into every nook and definitely worth a visit as you’re walking past.

Walk the short distance to the Louvre to immerse yourself in possibly the world’s premier museum and a Paris icon. It’s impossible to see everything in one visit so this guide on what to see in the Louvre is a good starting point. The French & Italian masterpieces are the most popular thanks to a truly world-class collection including the Mona Lisa. Napoleon’s lavish well-preserved apartments are another gem.

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop is possibly the finest hike in the Dolomites. Circling the three soaring spires of Tre Cime, this easy walk on simple to follow paths, has breathtaking views the entire way. Spiky peaks, reflective lakes, and well-positioned rifugios. If you only do one hiking trail in the Dolomites, make it this one.

Lago di Braies is the most Instagram friendly of the Dolomites’ lakes. Emerald water shimmers against dramatic cliffs in the background, with romantic wooden boats lining the shore.

This very easy Dolomites hike circumnavigates the lake passing a quaint chapel nestled among towering pine trees and a few shingle beaches. It’s a beautiful but popular spot so arrive early in the morning, just as the sun starts to rise over the peaks for a quieter visit.

Lago di Sorapis is a glistening turquoise lake backed by the craggy buttresses of the 3,200 mountain which shares its name. While many of the lakes in the Dolomites are packed with people, this one requires a decent hike. You may have it all to yourself.

Val di Funes is a stunningly picturesque valley and another Instagram favourite. The highlight is two attractive churches, surrounded by fields of hay, backed by the soaring spires of the Odle-Geisler peaks.

The best views are captured on this easy Dolomites hike along the Panoramaweg and Sunnseitenweg trails. The two paths traverse the edge of the Funes valley as undulating meadows unfurl below them. Higher up, fields lined with colourful alpine flowers frame the two churches and their towering backdrop, forming one of the best sights in the Dolomites

While the Val di Funes hike admires the peaks of Odle-Geisler from afar, this hike gets up close and personal with the jagged teeth and countless soaring spires. So close you’ll be straining your neck to see them. It’s one of our favourite hikes in the Dolomites and it’s an excellent day out in the mountains.

In March 2022, America's first and oldest national park celebrates its 150th anniversary, giving us a reason to go beyond the USA's cities and explore the country's natural beauty. As Yellowstone National Park turns 150, this is your opportunity to celebrate its epic sights, including Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Part of the Great American West region, Yellowstone covers 3,500 square miles of wilderness and officials have pledged to use its 150th anniversary as an opportunity to work closer with the 27 tribes whose connections to the land go back thousands of years. America is home to 63 national parks, including Canyonlands, Arches and Zion, which you can experience with Good Housekeeping on a Rocky Mountaineer adventure in 2022.

While the Greek islands opened up for summer 2021 holidays, we're looking forward to fully recharging here in 2022. This year, we plan on seeing its lesser-known side and Greek island specialist Olympic Holidays tells us that Halki is the place to watch. Halki is as near to authentic Greece as you will find, with fewer than 500 inhabitants (the first baby in almost 50 years was born in July 2021). The charming island captures you from the moment you set eyes on the harbour as the ferry from Rhodes edges closer.

Life here revolves around the harbour area, where a selection of bars and restaurants can be found. There are three main beaches – Pondamos, Ftenagia and Kania. You'll find only one taxi and one mini bus on the island, so congestion issues seem a world away and it's not long before the locals welcome you like one of their own. It's ideal as part of an island hop with Rhodes and you can expect to stay in traditional houses or at the only hotel on the island, the 19-room Aretanassa Hotel.

All eyes will be on Qatar when it hosts the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the first ever World Cup in the Arab, from 21 November to 18 December. The Middle Eastern country is known for its dizzying skyscrapers, amazing dining and luxury hotels, but there's fascinating Arab culture to explore for those looking to combine a sporting holiday with seeing the sights (or for those who wish to explore it before the football crowds arrive).

A destination that blends culture and modernity, Qatar is home to scenic sandy beaches, adrenalin-fuelling water sports, phenomenal architecture and awe-inspiring museums. Make it a luxury trip by checking into a five-star hotel, like the Mandarin Oriental, Doha or the Four Seasons Hotel Doha, and don't miss a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif, as well as a sunrise trip to the desert.

The most celebrated film release of 2021, No Time To Die took us back to the cinema as the latest instalment from the James Bond franchise brought edge-of-your-seat action to the big screen. While we were transported to various locations, from Italian city Matera to the Scottish Cairngorms, it was the scenes shot in Jamaica that gave us wanderlust that we see lasting well into 2022.

Port Antonio was used to shoot the scenes featuring Bond's villa, but there's beauty found around the island, whether you're staying in Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. Jamaica also doubled for Cuba later on in the film.

The Bavarian town of Oberammergau will see its renowned Passion Play return for the 42nd edition from May to October. The once-every-decade performance draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to its open-air re-enactment of Jesus Christ's suffering. Made up entirely of Oberammergau residents, including children, it's a moving five-hour performance worth travelling for.

One of the best ways to experience the Passion Play is to combine it with a trip to Italy to discover its historic regions through private tours of beautiful villas and chapels, before travelling through Austria to Germany. Good Housekeeping's exclusive Oberammergau Passion Play tour takes in the once-in-a-decade performance and more during a seven-day holiday in July.
