Ever seen a tree under 24-hour surveillance?

I have, and the tree even has a name: Emancipation Oak.

Emancipation Oak is a historic tree located on the campus of Hampton University in what is now the City of Hampton, Virginia. The large sprawling oak is 98 feet (30 m) in diameter, with branches that extend upward as well as laterally. It is designated one of the 10 Great Trees of the World by the National Geographic Society and is part of the National Historic Landmark district of Hampton University. The tree is a Live Oak (Quercus virgiana).

During the American Civil War (1861 to 1865), nearby Fort Monroe remained in Union hands, and became a place of refuge for escaped African American slaves seeking asylum. Prior to the Civil War, and following the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner in 1831, Virginia law had been changed to prohibit the education of slaves. Nevertheless, in 1861, Mrs. Mary Smith Peake (1823 to 1862) taught children of former slaves under the tree, which was 3 miles outside of the protective safety of Fort Monroe, and held night classes for adults. In 1863, the Virginia Peninsula's black community gathered under this tree to hear the first Southern reading of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

The Chesapeake Bay ~
> was formed nearly 12,000 years ago when glaciers melted and flooded the Susquehanna River valley;
>is—most historians believe—named after the Algonquin word chesepiooc, meaning "great shellfish bay;"
> is approximately 200 miles long, stretching from Havre de Grace, Maryland, to Norfolk, Virginia;
> has an average depth of 21 feet (the deepest part of the Bay, a.k.a. "The Hole," is 174 feet deep and located off of Bloody Point, southeast of Annapolis, Maryland;
> ranges from 3.4 to 35 miles wide;
> holds more than 15 trillion gallons of water;
> supports 348 species of finfish and 173 species of shellfish;
> supports more than 3,600 species of plant and animal life, including 2,700 types of plants and more than 16 species of underwater grasses;
> is fed by 50 major tributaries (or streams and rivers) every day—the largest of these are the Susquehanna, Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James;
> produces more than 500 millions pounds of seafood harvest each year.

The Chesapeake Bay Watershed ~
The Bay and the rivers and streams that feed it make up an impressive watershed, which:
> is the largest estuary in United States and the third largest in the world;
> supports more than 18 million people who live, work, and play within the watershed (10 million of these live along or near the Bay's shores);
> covers 64,000 square miles;
> includes parts of six states (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York) and Washington, D.C.;
> has 11,684 miles of shoreline, including tidal wetlands and islands (that's more shoreline than the entire West Coast of the United States);
> contains more than 100,000 rivers and streams;
> has a 14:1 land-to-water ratio;
> helps filter and protect the drinking water of 75 percent of Bay watershed residents through its forests and trees.

The Mariner’s Park is 550 acres of privately maintained, naturally wooded property that offers visitors a quiet and serene place to walk, run, or picnic. Within the Park is the 167-acre Mariners’ Lake.

Following the shoreline of the Mariners’ Lake is the five-mile Noland Trail. Dedicated as a gift from the Noland Family in 1991 and with significant ongoing financial support from the Noland Family, the trail has 14 bridges, picnic areas, benches, and mile markers. Each fall, The Mariners’ Museum hosts a Park celebration that includes the Noland Trail 50K and Relay and a family-friendly fall festival.

The Mariners’ Park is open daily to the public. Benches at approximately every half-mile offer places of rest along the trail, and views of the Mariners’ Lake can be found around every corner.

The famous Lions Bridge, a dam that provides a breathtaking view of the James River, remains a highlight for visitors - a perfect family gathering place to enjoy the Park. The beauty of the dam is enhanced by several fine pieces of statuary designed by Anna Hyatt Huntington, sculptor and wife of Museum founder Archer Milton Huntington. Four stone lions were mounted on the ends of the parapets of the dam in October 1932. Anna also created and dedicated a monument entitled Conquering the Wild that overlooks the Lions Bridge, Park, and Mariners’ Lake.
