Kakunodate Shimensha Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Iwase Kakunodate-machi, Semboku City. Dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the shrine is the guardian shrine of Kakunodate and, although there are various theories on the matter, it is said it was founded in the distant Azuchi-Momoyama period. The shrine is the location of the Kakunodate-matsuri festival, known for its traditional float battles designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and each year during the festival held for three days from September 7 to September 9, 18 traditional floats are pulled around the town and eventually bashed into each other. Performances of traditional Semboku Kitaura kagura shrine music and dancing are also held.

The old Aoyama Villa is located in Shukutsu, west of Otaru near Otaru Aquarium. This is a symbol of herring fishing. When the 2nd Aoyama family, Masakichi were thinking about the villa, his daughter Masae, 17 years old, planed a grandiose villa like The Honma family’s residence in Yamagata prefecture. She often visit the splendid house of Honma. People of Yamagata used to say, ‘I wish I was a lord of Yamagata even if I couldn’t be a Honma Family’. Masae wanted to construct more beautiful residence than Honma’s and she planed all of contents for a new residence. The residence, the old Aoyama Villa costed about 310,000 yen in those days. At that time, The famous department store in Shinjuku, Tokyo costed about 500,000 yen. You can imagine what a huge money the Aoyama spent for its building and Herring fishing made it at that time. This is designated as National tangible cultural property in 2010. The villa is called ‘Nishin Goten’ or ‘Otaru distinguished guest house’. This is definitely worth visiting.

Otaru Canal (小樽運河) was a central part of the city's busy port in the first half of the 20th century. Large vessels were unloaded by smaller ships, which then transported the goods to warehouses along the canal.
The canal became obsolete when modern dock facilities allowed for direct unloading of larger vessels. Thanks to a citizens' movement, a part of the canal was beautifully restored in the 1980s instead of being landfilled, while the warehouses were transformed into museums, shops and restaurants.
The canal makes for a pleasant stroll during the day, when artists present their works to passing tourists, and during the evenings when old fashioned gas lamps are lit and provide a romantic atmosphere. The canal also serves as the main site of the town's Snow Light Path Festival.

The Kushiro Washo Market (釧路和商市場, Kushiro Washo Ichiba) is the oldest market with long histories in Kushiro, which was set up in 1945, seen as civic kitchen. Because there were always energetic shouts “wasshoi, wasshoi” in the market (the pronunciation of “Wasshoi” is similar to “Washo” in Japanese), the market was named “Washo”, which means to trade harmoniously.
Stalls in this indoor market sell fresh and processed seafood, meat and vegetables as well as souvenirs. The main attraction for many visitors is "Kattedon", a personalizable seafood donburi: after purchasing a bowl of rice, you add small portions of seafood of your choice on top of the rice. Seasonal seafood like crabs can also be cooked by some vendors and eaten in the market.

The Sand Museum is a unique and fascinating facility that houses some of the best examples of sand sculpting in the world. The exhibitions change annually and last from mid-April until early January the following year. Past themes include regions such as Southeast Asia and South America and countries including Great Britain and Germany.
The Sand Museum was founded in 2006 and moved to its present site in 2012
The inherent impermanence of sand—part of the museum's appeal—is intrinsically linked to the Japanese virtue of appreciating that which is not perpetual
The sculptures are formed from sand unearthed from local road construction projects. This recovered sand shares the same physical qualities as that of the protected sand dunes.
The $5.5 million facility, the fine-grained sand and the contributions of top international sculptors combine to make Tottori one of the most renowned sand sculpting centers in the world.

Takeda Shrine (武田神社, Takeda Jinja) is a shrine in Kofu, built on the former grounds of the residence of local hero Takeda Shingen, one of the strongest feudal warlords in Japanese history. As well as features typical to a shrine, such as a main hall, prayer hall and multiple torii gates, ruined elements of the old residence can still be viewed, including some stone walls and a moat that protected the former residence.
The Takeda clan was based in Kofu for many generations and controlled today's Yamanashi Prefecture. Takeda Shingen expanded the clan's territories to include large parts of today's Nagano Prefecture and other areas. Shingen was one of the most powerful lords competing for supremacy towards the end of the era of warring states, but died just before a deciding battle with Oda Nobunaga who later defeated the Takeda and ultimately emerged as the unifier of the country.
In addition to a nice main hall and prayer hall, the shrine's verdant grounds contain a Noh stage and a network of paths that lead around the complex. There is also a treasure house in which a variety of exhibits pertaining to Takeda Shingen are exhibited, including old battle strategy diagrams, weapons, tools and items of clothing used by him.

The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum (大宮盆栽美術館) in Saitama City is a tranquil neighborhood two train stations north of Omiya Station. Multiple bonsai nurseries and a superb bonsai art museum are situated along the district's peaceful paths. Private houses in the area typically have a collection of bonsai in their gardens.

The formation of this village dates back to 1925. Due to the adverse effects of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, bonsai nurseries and garden industry workers in central Tokyo had to look for an alternative location; they chose to relocate to Omiya because of the clean water, available land and favorable soil found here.

An excellent addition to the village in 2010 was the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, which educates visitors about the various aspects of bonsai. English audio guides and well written English descriptions explain clearly how to appreciate the art form and highlight key points to take note of. The museum also exhibits the various styles of bonsai and accompanying elements such as pots and stones.

Toshodaiji (唐招提寺, Tōshōdaiji) was founded in the year 759 by Ganjin, a Chinese priest who was invited to Japan by the emperor in order to train priests and improve Japanese Buddhism. Ganjin's influence in the introduction of Buddhism to Japan was monumental, and his arrival and teaching at Toshodaiji (which roughly translates to "temple of the one invited from Tang China") were important stages in that process.
Toshodaiji's main hall (kondo) was re-opened in late 2009 after being renovated over a period of almost ten years, during which the building was dismantled and reconstructed. The temple's lecture hall (kodo) was originally an administrative building located in the Nara Imperial Palace and was later moved to Toshodaiji. Today, it is the only surviving building of the former palace.

Oura Church is a Catholic church in Nagasaki. Built towards the end of the Edo Period in 1864 by a French missionary for the growing community of foreign merchants in the city, it is considered the oldest standing Christian church in Japan.
Oura Church is dedicated to the memory of the 26 Christians who were executed in the city in 1597. Today, the working church stands as an attractive example of contemporary European architecture, drawing many visitors. The church was the first Western-style building in Japan to be designated as a national treasure. The steep admission fee includes entrance to a museum about the history of Christianity in Japan.
Located in attractive old buildings to the right of the church is the Christian Museum. Awaodori dance is a traditional performance art of Tokushima Prefecture. While incorporating a number of changes over the course of its 400-year history, awaodori dance has become what it is today. Awaodori Kaikan was made to preserve and pass down the tradition of awaodori dance.
On the second floor of the building is the Awaodori Hall. Here, daytime performances by the Awaodori Kaikan exclusive dance group are held. Evening performances alternate, and every day there is a performance by one of 33 famous dance groups. During the performances there is a trial corner in which audience members can participate. The third floor of the building is the Awaodori Museum, a mini museum with information about the history and culture of awaodori dance. Costumes, props, and musical instruments from throughout the history of the dance are on display, so it's easy to learn about the transition of awadori. Miniature reproductions of what awaodori dance looked like in the past and 3D videos can be enjoyed at the Awaodori 3D Theater.
An additional point of interest is the Sanroku Station on the fifth floor, the start of the ropeway that connects Awaodori Kaikan and the summit of Mt. Bizan. From the summit, visitors can enjoy the magnificent panorama of Hirano Heiya Plain facing the Kii Channel. On top of all that, the Tokushima Prefecture Product Association has a shop on the first floor of Awaodori Kaikan called Arudeyo Tokushima at which various crafts, sweets, and other special products are sold.
