Winter is a time of deep reflection and contemplation. It is a time to rug up, get outdoors and face the elements. We would like to invite you to walk together, connect with nature and explore what winter means for you as we contemplate the bigger picture.

Kit Kline from Nature Based Therapy, and I have joined together to bring you "Nature Revive" - a one day workshop in Anglesea, Victoria.

It's commonly known as the 'wow' moment, that point in a Deep Time Walk when participants deeply grasp the unfathomable age of Earth, its perfect equilibrium, and the astonishingly recent emergence of the human story. This sensation, variably described as "giddiness", "dizzyness" and "staggering" is more formally termed “awe”—a profound reverence for a planet that has existed for eons, undergone multiple transformations, and continually adapted and regenerated itself....

Next Sunday (25th Feb), I will be leading a Deep Time Walk in Port Melbourne as part of the National Sustainability Festival. Spend your sunday morning exploring the 4.6bn years of Earth's history, enjoying a lovely summer walk along the beach, and engaging in fascinating discussions with like-minded people.

Thank you to Community Bank Windsor for supporting this and the Port Phillip EcoCentre for arranging it. And to Stephan Harding and Sergio Maraschin at Schumacher College for developing the concept.

Join us on this Deep Time Walk - a time travel through the rich geological and evolutionary history of the Earth up until the present day.

With the National Sustainable Living Festival in full swing, there is so much to choose from over the next couple of weeks for those who like to immerse in nature. I will be leading a Deep Time Walk, in conjunction with the Port Phillip EcoCentre starting and finishing at Port Melbourne. It will be my first time leading a walk there but it's a beautiful area with plenty of shade, shelter, drinking water, seating and toilets....

Thank you Community Bank Windsor for supporting the Deep Time Walks I will be facilitating this year at the EcoCentre.

It was so interesting and inspiring to hear from all the other groups at the Partnership Presentation in November. Best wishes to you all for a successful and meaningful 2024.

This is my lemon tree. Sadly she died just six years old. I have no idea what went wrong. I followed all the instructions. I know it is unusual to share pictures of failure on Instagram. Instagram is full of success stories, beautiful gleaming lemons, shiny apples, bright red strawberries. But when I look at my poor deceased tree, it reminds me that food production can be hard and we should never take it for granted. Even when success is on the horizon, catastrophe may arise without warning. I spare a thought for those farmers who do not have the option of running to the shops to buy lemons when their trees die. Those whose livelihoods depend on bountiful harvests. It makes me appreciate how precious and precarious food is. Goodbye dear lemon tree.

Lovely to see Jess now leading Deep Time Walks in Werribee. Jess was a participant in 2022, following which we had a few zoom chats before joined the global Deep Time Walk community by leading her own walks in Werribee.

"Deep time asks us to rethink our narrow conceptions of time by looking back far into Earth’s history, and looking forward far into the future."

This sentence sums it up so perfectly.

For non-Indigenous Australians, the last summer of bushfires seemed to mark the end times. Indigenous Australians have a long perspective on history, which offers hope.

Marcia's book "Timefulness" is fast becoming one of my favourite reads. She manages to explain basic geological principles in a way which even I (with no background in geology) can understand, whilst demonstrating that we can expect much of what has happened in the past to happen again in the future. And all in poetic language that is beautiful to read.

If anyone is yet to be convinced that we need to educate ourselves in basic Earth's history to adequately protect its future, then read this. Or if you would prefer a brief introduction, then listen to one of her many engaging podcasts eg https://longnow.org/seminars/02019/jul/22/timefulness/

It was lovely to have the opportunity to let more Port Phillip residents know about Deep Time Walks. If anyone knows a group (8+ people) who would be interested in going for a Deep Time Walk, do reach out.

Step through time with Tamara a local City of Port Phillip resident and social researcher who runs immersive ‘Deep time walks’ taking people on a 4.6km walk through 4.6 billion years of history and talking through all the amazing changes that happen over that time until the present day. This week we sat down to talk to Tamara about the walks, hear what drives her and to talk about all the big issues around long-term thinking and climate change. Read her story here - https://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/about-the-council/news-and-media/tamara-s-walk-through-time

Upcoming walk - Friday 28 July.
