Overview
Most short-term rental (STR) regulations that impact your ability to host are introduced at the municipal, or city/town level. First, the council decides to explore regulatory options. From here, municipalities typically provide the opportunity for residents to provide their thoughts, often in the form of a quick and simple online survey. Participating in these surveys is one of the most efficient ways to ensure that conversations around STR regulation include the voices of Hosts from the start - and we'll be sure to send these out if and when they're available in your community!
Based on this feedback, the Council drafts their proposal and a first reading of the new bylaw is introduced. From here, public hearings are held (sometimes online, sometimes in-person), allowing community members like you the opportunity to share your opinion on the proposals. This is another key moment in the development of STR regulations, and it's crucial that our Host community gets involved! We often ask Hosts to send emails, call their representatives, and attend hearings during this period, and using our advocacy tools, we've made it easier than ever to speak out! Following this, the bylaw goes through multiple revisions and readings, until finally, it is passed.
