In the beginning human life upon earth was easy. The pounded rice, all ready for cooking, came from inside squashes. It so happened that a fool went in search of dalkot, a sweeter variety of rice, more valued than ordinary rice. He was extravagant and wasteful, cutting many squashes in several fields, destroying the fruits of the people and scattering the rice uselessly. Kabuniyan saw this wastefulness from on high, and changed the conditions of humans. Rice no longer grew easily from squashes—they had to arduously plant and grow it.

Even if they had to work hard to grow rice, the people were wasteful—growing more rice than they could eat, and burning what was left over. Kabuniyan punished them again for their wastefulness by sending rats—but these rats ate all the rice, and none was left for the humans. Kabuniyan had mercy on them, and sent cats to eat the rats.
