Belinda and her fam set out to see Ghana from the inside out – the type of perspective you can only get from someone who calls the country their home. And for Belinda, it felt like she was home too.

"From the time we landed until we left, I truly felt like I was home. I have never been to this part of the world, but nothing was foreign to me."

Her tip for planning a visit to Ghana? Stay for at least two weeks. And mid-June is a perfect time to go – "Not yet rainy season but also not too hot, not too crowded as it's off-season for them I believe."

A few of the itinerary highlights:
– National Museum of Ghana
– Black Star Gate & the Black Star Square
– Wli (Agumatsa) Falls
– Canopy walk in Kakum National Park
– Ghanaian Cooking Class
– Traditional Batik-Making Workshop

Japan, the local way for 's 40th.

He started planning the trip himself, but pivoted to the local experts when overwhelm set in by the amount of guidance out there. There's lists and tips for Japan everywhere – how do you just decide?

Derek took all the input and got them into knife-making workshops, a ryokan with a private onsen, a Michelin star kaiseki ryotei, plus a night out in Shinjuku Golden G*i, and more.

His tip for wandering around when it's colder out? Stop by the hot drink vending machines.

And for where he's headed next? He's looking for recs so you know what to do ⬇️

One of the biggest questions when traveling is where to eat. The fear of missing out on the "best" can keep us from experiencing something we might have never tried before. But if you ask a local, they'll tell you simply to go where all the other locals go. There's a reason you eat where you do in your own city, right?

Now if you're local-to-tourist radar isn't the best, our local experts can point you in the right direction. They've got recs on recs.

Dominicans will tell you that it’s no accident their country is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Our adventurous local expert Isabel shows you why (and that's not even half of it) in her exclusive guide to Dominican Republic 👀

What’s not to like?’ they’d ask, pulling you out for a night soaked in rum and merengue dancing. It’s a hard argument to dispute. Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial exudes romance, the coast is fringed with white beaches and scuba diving sites, while the more energetic can delve into the lush green interior to trek along mountain trails. In a country that lists baseball diamonds alongside churches as hallowed ground, you can expect fun to be taken seriously – why else insist on having not one but two annual carnival celebrations?

Why local >>>

When a friend shows you around their city, it feels different. They ask if you want to see the big hits, but they're really dying to show you their favorite farmers' market and that less crowded spot around the corner.

The people who grow up and live in the destinations we're visiting have an overwhelming passion for protecting and preserving all the beauty that makes it such a tourist destination.

When a local plans your trip, they make sure you are not only seeing the coolest and most unique spaces that their destination has to offer but also ensure that you stay at locally-owned accommodations, avoid the activities that have a negative impact on the environment, and work to keep travel dollars with the locals rather than funneled into large corporations. Everybody wins.

Elsewhere was founded on protecting, uplifting, and preserving all the countries we visit, and all the local experts we partner with. It's one of the reasons that when you travel with us, you're taking a trip you can feel good about.

Our girl Emma Lovewell gives all the details of her trip to Japan with Elsewhere to Condé Nast Traveler 🤩

"We spent one night sleeping in a Buddhist temple with monks. In the morning, we meditated with them and then took a half-day hike up Haguro mountain to meet with Chef Ido. He specializes in making traditional ido sojo ryonen—a meal made using all fermented vegetables originally developed for monks to sustain themselves during long periods on the mountain. We were able to cook this meal and eat it with him."

More highlights include: cycling with locals, learning from Samurais, and eating next-level cuisine. You'll want to check this one out.

We take a look at how interesting people with fascinating jobs are traveling for work right now.
