Emirates passengers offered chance to purchase adjoining seats

With demand for air travel still low following the Covid-19 pandemic, Emirates has begun offering passengers a chance to snap up empty seats in economy class.

Up to three adjoining seats on a flight and will be offered to all economy class customers holding a confirmed booking.

Customers will not be able to pre-book empty seats, however, as these are subject to availability.

Emirates operates first fully vaccinated flight

Following Etihad and Singapore Airlines early successes in their vaccination efforts and operation of their first fully vaccinated flights, Emirates yesterday operated its first flight with a fully vaccinated frontline team servicing customers at every touchpoint of the travel journey.

Flight EK215, which departed Dubai for Los Angeles, was safely supported by check-in, security, business and first-class lounge and boarding gate employees, as well as engineers, pilots and cabin crew who made the choice to be fully vaccinated.

Also supporting the operation were fully vaccinated aircraft appearance, loading and special handling teams from Dnata, as well as Emirates SkyCargo teams working on the cargo and logistics requirements for the flight.

The Emirates Group rolled out its vaccination drive at a pace just over a month ago, and since then, close to 26,000, or 44 per cent, of the UAE-based frontline aviation workforce, have received both doses of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Sinopharm vaccines.

Adel Al Redha, chief operating officer, Emirates Airline, said: “Our operational workforce are at the aviation frontline, helping people get to where they need to be, and moving essential goods to global communities.

“Protecting our people with vaccinations is important – for them, for our community, for the smooth running of our operations, and also for our customers as it introduces an additional layer of protection when they travel with us.”

Nearly 5,000 cabins and flight deck crew have opted to receive both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. Well done Emirates, this will certainly help in restoring confidence to traveler for a quicker rebound of travel.

Royal Caribbean is starting ‘fully vaccinated’ cruises from Israel

As cruise lines await an uncertain future in the United States, one major player is announcing plans to sail from Israel with vaccinated passengers and crew.

Royal Caribbean International announced Monday morning that its newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas, will start sailing from Haifa in May with Israeli passengers. The operator said it will be the first to offer “fully vaccinated sailings,” with crew and passengers older than 16 required to have a full course of the vaccine against covid-19.

“Thanks to the millions of vaccines we have brought, I am proud that Israel will be the first country in the world to launch Royal Caribbean’s new flagship,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. “Royal Caribbean’s decision to come to Israel is a significant expression of confidence in our policy. This is an important economic, touristic moment for the State of Israel.”

Should vaccinated people be allowed to travel freely?

Some countries have considered opening their borders to tourists who have been vaccinated. Thailand considered it, but last week the government spoke out against the idea. Australia says that vaccination will be required for entry into the country when borders re-open.

The retort we have been told over and over is that vaccines protect the person vaccinated, but not those around you – you might still become infected without symptoms and spread the virus. And that is true, but apparently, some scientists say it’s misleading. These are the facts that they have presented.

Vaccines reduce asymptomatic infection in addition to symptomatic infection (at least some of them have been shown to)
And asymptomatic infection is less likely among the vaccinated (at least with some vaccines)
Asymptomatic individuals are not as likely to spread the virus as those who develop symptoms.
There is a common confusion between pre-symptomatic spread (people who spread the virus before showing symptoms) and asymptomatic spread (spreading the virus by someone who never shows any symptoms). The former is one of the hallmarks of the pandemic, the latter much less common.

We know roughly how protective the vaccines are for the individual vaccination. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines each showed about 95% effectiveness in preventing symptomatic Covid. But that is not the most important feature.

Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are nearly 100% effective against severe Covid. The AstraZeneca vaccine reported 100% effectiveness against hospitalization.

The question is how much vaccination reduces transmission. We know that it does. That was even shown in Moderna’s and Pfizer’s Phase 3 trial data. There is some dispute about how much of a reduction there is. And let’s be clear: no one believes that these vaccines do not reduce transmission. They probably reduce transmission by a lot.

An Israeli study studies 102 vaccinated patients and found “that people who received both doses of the vaccine will most likely not become carriers of the virus and will not spread it further.”

Israel is the most vaccinated country on earth and its health system keeps robust data. That makes its real-time vaccination efforts fertile ground for understanding the effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that is in widespread use there.

A new study has found a reduction in transmission even after the first dose. Those who test positive for Covid-19 twelve or more days after taking the first dose have a viral load that’s four times lower than those who haven’t been vaccinated at all.

Vaccinated people become far less of a COVID transmission risk even before receiving their second dose, a new “game-changing” Israeli study has concluded.

The viral load was shown to be reduced fourfold on average for infections occurring 12 to 28 days after the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Cohen, a Bar Ilan University professor and member of a Health Ministry advisory committee on coronavirus vaccines, said: “This shows that indeed, besides reducing symptoms and hopefully mortality, the vaccine may facilitate reaching some kind of herd immunity, allowing the partial protection of the weak or non-immunized.”

We do not yet know how much transmission is reduced, especially when the second shot has been added into the mix. We do know based on new data that vaccination with at least some Covid-19 vaccines reduces transmission, though. We will soon know if they reduce transmission enough to allow those who have been vaccinated to travel more freely.

UAE hotels prepare for V-shaped recovery after vaccine rollout and herd immunity take effect

Recent hospitality industry reports and analysis published by STR and Colliers International, have revealed that hotels in the UAE have put up a sterling performance, given the challenges of operating during the pandemic last year.

To support the hotel industry still further during the vaccine rollout, Arabian Travel Market (ATM), which will take place in-person at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) 16-19 May 2021, is organising a Hotel Summit on 18 May. The event will address and debate the trends and key drivers that will support the Middle East’s hotel sector’s recovery, as the vaccine rollout gathers momentum and herd immunity takes effect.

Danielle Curtis, exhibition director of Middle East in Arabian Travel Market, said: “According to STR data, the Middle East region was a top performer globally during 2020, with average occupancy of 45.9%. One of best performing countries was the UAE with an average occupancy of 51.7% and an average daily rate (ADR) of USD 114.”

“Although these figures were 29.3% & 16.5% down Y-on-Y, given the challenges presented by the pandemic, it is a remarkable achievement and proves just how resilient the hotel sector is in the UAE and wider Middle East. Furthermore, if we drill down on these figures, ADR in Fujairah and RAK actually rose last year by 7% and 1% respectively, compared with 2019 and over the New Year’s celebrations hotels in Dubai were running average occupancies of 76% with an ADR of USD 300.”

Many hoteliers in the Middle East are now preparing for a V-shaped recovery, especially with the successful rollout of the vaccine and the ensuing herd immunity, added Curtis. Indeed, more positives can be drawn from a recent YouGov luxury survey which revealed that more than half (52%) of the respondents said they were planning to take a domestic holiday or staycation during 2021 and a further 25% were planning to make a business trip, either domestically or internationally, with only 4% having no plans to travel anywhere in 2021.

Moreover, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also indicated that British nationals may be allowed to travel without any restrictions as soon as June 21st, which, given their close ties, would be a major boost for business and leisure travel throughout the Middle East, added Curtis.

Initially two sessions will take place at the Hotel Summit on ATM’s Global Stage, the first will address the changing roles of hotels, such as workations and changing guest expectations and the second discussion will look into the issue of enhancing the hospitality experience, while introducing technological innovation. A further session will take place during ATM’s virtual event on 25 May, when a panel of experts will examine whether wellness and sustainability trends, will b accelerated during the post-pandemic recovery.

Delaying restart of international travel will cost UK economy USD 37 billion: WTTC

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has warned that nearly GBP 27 billion (USD 37.46 billion) will be lost from the UK economy if the government delays restarting international travel until 17 May. The date was set by Prime Minister Boris Johnson when he unveiled the highly anticipated roadmap out of lockdown earlier this week.

According to the government’s roadmap, two households will be able to mix outdoors from 29 March and WTTC believes this should signal the restart of safe international travel.

Resuming international travel by just seven weeks earlier, to coincide the Easter holiday break, could save struggling Travel & Tourism businesses up and down the country and provide a much-needed economic boost to the economy.

WTTC, which represents the global tourism private sector, fears delaying the revival of international travel for another seven weeks, will hasten the further slide into collapse of a sector which contributes £200 billion annually to the UK economy, and is responsible for almost four million jobs.

Greek Tourism Improvement Hinges on Vaccination

Greece may see growth in the third quarter of the year provided a large part of its population and of its tourism source markets are vaccinated against Covid-19 by June, said Greece’s Center of Planning & Economic Research (KEPE) in its new report this week.
“If all goes well, there will be a possibility of peak growth in the third [tourist] quarter of 2021, which will probably offset any negative developments in the first quarter,” said KEPE analysts.

The possibility of growth, KEPE said, hinges on speedy vaccination rollouts across Europe and in Greece which will enable non-essential travel and then “we can in Greece expect the return of visitors”. KEDE stresses, however, that tourist arrivals in 2021 will not achieve 2019 levels – 31.4 million visits who spent 18 billion euros – but it will be a good start. In 2020 Covid year, tourism-related revenue came to 4.2 billion euros and the number of arrivals did not exceed 7.3 million down by 76.5 percent against 2019. Recommendations KEPE makes to attract more travelers to Greece include diversifying the tourist product and making wise use of funding opportunities.
“The tourist in the summer 2021 should not be the same as the tourist of the summer of 2019,” said KEPE analysts, adding that the government must channel NSRF and Recovery Fund support into basic, digital, health and safety infrastructure.
