For families, traveling to witness the 2024 total solar eclipse, finding family-friendly events is crucial.

We lucked out during the 2017 eclipse, finding a fantastic event in North Charleston South Carolina - gated access that was inexpensive, educational, organized. All the pics on this post are from the 2017 eclipse. Find something like what we took our children to in Charleston; not the free for all you'll find if you don't prepare.

Totality will last anywhere from 3-4 minutes depending on the location you choose. The day will start early. You'll travel to the viewing site, set up your lawn chairs and tripods - then wait, and wait some more.

If you have children, it's imperative to have: activities to keep them occupied, access to food, and bathrooms for obvious reasons.

We'll keep updating this post with family friendly events that check all the requirements to keep your children safe, entertained and occupied.

--- Texas ---
If traveling to Texas for the eclipse your best bet, as of March 4th, is Austin. Prices haven't risen to obscene levels ... yet. What's it like out there? The Fairfield Inn, Fredericksburg TX, rooms are $874 per night! The Fairfield Inn 😲😔

Get ready for a celestial spectacle with the 2024 total solar eclipse! To enhance your viewing experience, why not try a classic technique dating back centuries? The pinhole camera, or camera obscura, is a fascinating way to safely view eclipses. It's a simple device that creates an image using just a small hole and the principles of light.

The history of the pinhole camera is as intriguing as its function. From ancient Chinese philosopher Mo Ti to the legendary Leonardo da Vinci, this device has captivated minds for millennia. It was used by astronomers like Gemma Frisius and Johannes Kepler to study solar eclipses and sunspots. Even artists and photographers have employed it for its unique perspective and soft image outlines.

But why is the pinhole camera so special for eclipse viewing? Its ability to project an image using the basic principles of light creates a safe and unique way to observe solar phenomena. With an infinite depth of field, it captures everything in focus, whether close up or far away.

Creating your own pinhole camera is easy and fun. All you need is a light-proof box, a thin metal piece with a tiny hole, and some photographic paper or film. This DIY project not only prepares you for the eclipse but also connects you to a rich history of science and art.

For detailed instructions on creating your pinhole projector, check out the video we shared.

And remember, keep visiting our page for more tips and insights to make your 2024 eclipse experience unforgettable. Let's embark on this astronomical journey together!

🌑🤣 Eclipse Photography: Expectation vs. Reality

Expectation: You're all set with your camera gear, thinking you'll snap the next iconic eclipse photo. You've planned your shot, the angle's just right, and you're ready to capture celestial magic. 📸✨

Reality: Fast forward, and you're staring at a collection of blurry blobs and overexposed smudges that vaguely resemble an eclipse. Is that the sun or just a bright street light? 🤔🌚

But here's the thing - no photograph can truly match the feeling of witnessing a solar eclipse in person. The chill as day turns to night, the surreal calm as the world pauses to look up, and that indescribable moment of totality. That's the real magic. 🌌💫

So, whether your eclipse photos are gallery-worthy or... let's say 'uniquely abstract,' it's all about the experience. And remember, you're not alone - we've all been there! Join us for tips on better photography next time, and let's keep marveling at the wonders of the sky together. 😄🌒

Next week, on the afternoon of Saturday Oct 14th, there will be an Annular Eclipse (known as a Ring of Fire eclipse) crossing the United States from Oregon to Texas. If you are in the eclipse path, or near it, this is a fantastic opportunity to test camera settings or to just witness one of nature's wonders!

SAFETY: At no point during an annular eclipse can you remove your eye protection. The moon does not completely cover the sun as it does during a total eclipse. You must have certified eye protection AT ALL TIMES. Here are some suggested products:

Photographing this eclipse? Keep your hands free and phone/camera safe with these plastic eclipse glasses and solar lens filter:

Just enjoying nature's wonder? Use the cardboard eclipse glasses; they're safe and inexpensive. You'll find yourself holding them at the temples so they're not great if you need to keep your hands free.

Weather ... the great unknown! We can't predict the weather 9 months out but we can hedge our bets and prepare just in case our chosen location isn't looking so great 😕

Here's the plan ....

- choose your path of totality "home base" - preferably somewhere near an intersection of major highways

- know some alternative locations within driving distance.

- be prepared to drive the morning of the eclipse if needed. Have a weather radar app on your mobile device.

On the morning of August 21, 2017 Getting Ready for the Total Solar Eclipse 2014 were in Charleston South Carolina, looking at heavy cloud cover and potential storms. Luckily the storms held off and the clouds cleared soon after we took this picture! Not everyone was so lucky or prepared 😔

Annular Solar Eclipse 2023: A Prelude and Practice for 2024

Before we dive deep into the much-awaited 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, there's another celestial event on the horizon that deserves our attention—the Annular Solar Eclipse in 2023.

For the uninitiated, an annular eclipse occurs when the moon doesn't entirely cover the sun, resulting in a vibrant ring, often referred to as the "Ring of Fire." It's both a unique and captivating sight.

🗓 Date: October 14, 2023

📍 Prime Viewing Locations: Areas spanning the U.S. West Coast, Central America, and Colombia. Especially fortunate are spots like San Diego, CA and Medellín, Colombia, where the ring will be nearly perfect.

Getting ready for the Total Solar Eclipse 2024 is traveling to Santa Fe New Mexico for this eclipse!

Safety First: There is never a time during the annular eclipse when ISO-certified solar viewing glasses aren't required!

A Photographer's Prelude: For those gearing up to capture the 2024 Total Eclipse, this is your rehearsal.

Experiment with settings, find the right angles, and learn from the experience to ensure you're ready for the main event next year. I'd love to see the shots you capture—do share them here!

As always, share your experiences, insights, or queries below. Remember, the 2023 event is a beautiful precursor to the magnificence awaiting us in 2024.

What's the best way to understand what to expect during 2024 total solar eclipse? Take a look back at the last total eclipse visible from North America that occurred on August 21, 2017.

This video, from Oregon, is the best we've seen, showing not only the eclipse itself but also conveying the sense of awe experienced by the crowds gathered for this once in a lifetime, maybe twice if you're lucky, event.

Did you see the 2017 eclipse? Where were you? What was it like? Drop a pic or tell us all about it!

Seems like alot of time but we can tell you from experience it's best to start planning now.

- Where will you go to see the eclipse?
- Is it close enough for a day trip?
- If not, where are you staying?
- Eye protection purchased?
- Capturing the eclipse? Have you practiced? Have the gear you'll need?

If the 2017 total solar eclipse taught us anything it's that planning is essential for a good experience. Last minute interest skyrocketed once the news latched onto the coming eclipse. Suddenly hotels had no availaboe rooms, or were insanely priced. Solar eclipse glasses? Forget it. Think Taylor Swift tickets on the secondary market. Over the next week we'll lay out a checklist and suggestions so you're Ready for the Total Solar Eclipse.
