Easter in Sicily is a theatre of devotion and drama. Across the island, ancient rites unfold in narrow streets and sunlit piazzas. On Good Friday, masked figures with crimson faces, leather tongues, and jangling chains roam the towns — mischievous, defiant, and loud. Their aim? To disrupt. But when the Easter procession begins, even they surrender to the solemn power of tradition. In the stunning landscape of deepest Sicily, Il Ballo dei Diavoli — the Dance of the Devils — plays out an archaic struggle between Good and Evil, with towering iron masks and terrifying grace.

The celebrations end sweetly: with cuddura cu l’ova, a braided bread adorned with whole eggs, and the iconic Easter Lamb cake of Favara, handcrafted from almond paste — both as ornate and symbolic as the rituals that precede them.
