It is often about more than just riding....

Women and Cycling

In the picture: Sabitri Kandel selling vegetables and milk on a bicycle in the mid-80s in Chitwan. In 1976, she started a small dairy business and vegetable farming to sustain her family and educate her kids. She didn’t want to place a financial burden on her husband who had gone to study in Banaras. In Chitwan, many migrant women were involved in agriculture and dairy farming.

For women, a bicycle was far more than just a tool for transport. A bicycle symbolized emancipation and equal rights. It was a tool for financial independence, in a male-dominated society where women were considered inferior gender.

This is a fun little bridge across the Mandai River that is currently only accessible from the east, from the upper portion of Woodlands Rd near the Esso Station. Before Covid-19, it was a link between Kranji Rd and Woodlands Rd and maybe someday in the future, it will be again.

A belated thank you to yet another fabulous group of people (Celeste, Sarah, Louren, Jenny, Gordon, and Brian) to ride around the entire island of Singapore again. I was humbled to learn more about road biking from them and honored to show them a bit of my version of Singapore. 189kms, Lamp Post #1, Bollywood, Rainbow Bridge, Woodlands Jetty and Admiralty Park, Sembawang, Jalan Kayu, Pasir Ris, Changi and yes...all the way around the airport, back along ECP and into Robertson Quay for well-deserved margaritas.
I have learned so much from all the people who have shared their time and patience with me, their trust that I will show them something new and willingness to explore the interesting as well as the bizarre.

I find this story strikingly similar to the Pandemic Pedallers and the origin story of Bike-a-Local Singapore. A group of Black dads in New Jersey isn't quite the same as a very diverse group of women in Singapore, but you might be surprised.

I'm psyched to be sharing a new Secret Pedals route with y'all. Ride #16 – Yip Yew Chong Mural Ride – Part 2 has just gone live on the website...FINALLY! (https://bike-a-local.com/portfolio/secret-pedals-yyc-murals-part-2/)

This is one of my favorite rides to take friends on. It goes right through Armenian Street, Waterloo, Little India, Lavender, the Arab Quarter, and Kampong Glam. You’ll see lots of murals by so many different artists as well as more of those by Yip Yew Chong, a favorite Singapore Artist.

Yip Yew Chong has his first solo gallery exhibition at The Art Porters Gallery, Art Porters https://www.artporters.com/artists/yip-yew-chong/ which is definitely worth checking out. The gallery is actually along the 'Part 1' route, in case you decide to do both parts in one day.

Highlights of today’s ride: Starting in Holland Village, walking the Roseau Walk in Jurong Lake Gardens, enjoying some carrot cake and prata in Pioneer and checking out NTU’s Yunan Garden, remarkable architecture and yes....hills! All that with my amazing team? I’m so lucky!

We got to the Dragon Kilns and wished we had more time...and ability to carry large expensive ceramics on our bicycles.

Today, we waited out the rain at the Polo Club, and were rewarded by cool architecture in Toa Payoh. Then disappointed by a closed Donut Shack and Wheeler’s Yard. A different kind of ‘Secrets’!
Will have to go back soon, this route is a fascinating little loop, easily accessible from downtown.
