We’re currently in the UK trying to get (difficult to obtain!) visas and waiting to recover some Schengen days, as we’d used our full quota on our last road trip!

However, whilst we wait, we’re now on our travels around the Isle of Skye and the North Coast 500 in Scotland!

Scotland is just Magnificent!

Norway blog … letsexplorehere.com

Is Norway the most stunning country in the world? Can it be true? We’ve been to many countries and climes, including places like New Zealand, Switzerland the Maldives, deserts, all of which are ridiculously beautiful in their own right! But Norway… there’s not many places that I’ve been brought to a standstill so often – just outrageous! If you haven’t been, go!

Although I was always excited to finally visit Norway – it’s been high on my list for … ever! … and although I’ve seen it many times on TV etc., nothing prepares you for the glory of those vistas! Even on rainy days you’ll be blown away – even when it was foggy, we were still super excited. Yet when it’s sunny – just incredible. There really just aren’t enough superlatives!

But it’s massive! Just far bigger than you imagine! Plus you’re mostly limited to 50mph, at least legally! 😉 You can literally drive for 8 hours at a time if you want to and you barely move on the map. But you don’t because you stop every ten minutes to admire the views, and you follow the trains pf cars ambling along, because you are in awe! INCREDIBLE!

We were informed when we were in Sweden that Norway was expensive, and that ‘Oslo is the only boring place in Norway’! Whether this is true of Oslo, We can’t say, as we didn’t visit – mostly due to the cost. Instead, we stayed at the Sundvollen Hotel, which is not too far away, and is one of, if not the, oldest hotel in Norway. The staff were excellent and the hotel is top notch. Views over the surrounding lakes, spotless hotel, really relaxing – high recommended.

Plus the Kings View is right next door – walk an almost vertical path for a mile and you’ll eventually be congratulated with the view fit for a king – literally!

So, if you ever do end up staying at the Sundvollen hotel, I highly recommend scaling the mountain to the Kings View – it is an extremely steep walk for the first mile, but then it levels out to give you spectacular views that you won’t regret. All in all it’s about a 3 hour walk.

And, it wasn’t raining – most of the time! After all the rain we experienced in Sweden, it was like chalk and cheese, the difference between Sweden and Norway. Almost as soon as you cross the border, the landscape changes, and becomes more mountainous, and just more incredible in general!

And did I mention that literally everyone speaks English! Apparently 98% + of the population speak English – which is more than in the UK probably! It’s just so easy – why we’ve not been before is unbelievable! However we dis manage to find the one restaurant where none of the staff did speak any English of course – typical and very funny! We laughed – they didn’t!

The Arctic Circle

Wow, never been this far North – amazing! We were initially going to island hop, but the directions took us on loads of gravel roads that made for super slow going. So part way, we abandoned that route and headed for the Arctic Circle Centre! What better way to celebrate no more night time than to open a centre with a souvenir shop on what seems to be the only place in Norway that’s a bit like being on the moon!

The centre itself was great as a destination to head towards – although it seemed to be a park for campers when we were there – we moved on! Some miles North (difficult to tell by this point as Norway is so long), the landscape become mountainous again – as opposed to being on top of a flat mountain! We stopped and admired the (yet again) amazing views! All night – as there is no night – just day! Luckily I have lead eyelids, so it means nothing to me! Not everyone is the same though!

The Fjords

No words can adequately describe the splendour that goes on and on! Magnificent!

Nordkapp

The Top of Europe – just incredible! If you haven’t been, you really must! Even though its a tourist mecca – which was a surprise to us! There’s cruise boats and helicopters and coaches galore!

But to drive there all the way from the UK – just amazing! It’s the way that the mountains are just so crazily shaped … Slartibartfast did a good job!

There was a queue to get in to Nordkapp!!! What!!! Yeah a queue to get to the most Northerly point on mainland Europe – bonkers!

The island itself is lovely, lots of undulating hills with masses of coastline – and all there is in front of you is Svalbard and ice! Incredible!

Driving in trains

In the main, the speed limit in Norway is 50 miles per hour. Which is fine, as there’s so much to see. And it seems that Norwegians don’t like breaking speeding laws!? So you end up in huge long trains of cars and campers and lorries and bikers – literally miles long – all trundling along at 45-50 mph!

The thing is though that many campers and bikers are actually travelling at 35-40mph – no doubt enjoying the incredible views. And yet everyone seems content to just chill behind them – no overtaking like you’d get in the UK – just bizarre and at the same time admirable!

We stopped many times – let it all go past and had the road to ourselves again 🙂

Reindeer

When we first started seeing signs for reindeer in Sweden, we were excited to see one! When you do, it’s amazing! By the time you get to Nordkapp, they’re literally everywhere! They own the roads! It’s their pad – put up with it!

Its the way they just walk onto the road as if cars don’t exist! I guess everyone slams the anchors on, so they learn not to worry! But they’ve got these very cute but very dim looking faces – in may view! When you slow down they purposefully walk in front of your car. When you try to drive around, they walk in front of you again – hilarious! We love them! Took one in fact – put it in the boot – it’s there now!

Camping

There are loads of brilliant campsites in Norway, and you can also camp wild! All of it is VERY worth doing! Look at the kind of views you could wake up to! You find that others are just sitting there admiring the views and happy to share a coffee – just great!

Saving some Finns

Oh yeah we saved some Finns! Their massive camper was stuck in gravel overlooking a fjord. We were looking for somewhere to wild camp and we almost passed them. They hailed us down. But there was no way that our little Golf was going to pull a giant camper out – or maybe it would – but we didn’t have a tow bar! On the way though I’d noticed that there was a guy with a 4×4 not too far away – maybe I could persuade him to help! It turned out that he too was Finnish and that his wife spoke English. Nice! New found Finnish friends!

Sweden blog …

So we went to Sweden twice on this trip! Once as part of our scheduled trip, and once after we failed in our endeavour to get to Nordkapp! The first time, it rained and rained and rained some more. The second time it was the hottest place in Sweden – awesome, or so we thought ….

I got breathalysed on the way in to Sweden!!! 😉

OMG Denmark – who knew just how fantastic it is? We love it! Crikey, where do you start?

Spodsbjerg, Langeland

So for those who’ve been to Hyannis in the states – you know, where the Kennedy’s used to go on vacation [on holiday as we know it 😉 – it’ll ring a bell! Spodsbjerg is just one of the most relaxing place ever – omg! It’s like stripping all your concerns away and taking you back the bare essentials and leaving you with a big beaming grin on your face – just pleasantly FANTASTIC! I literally could live there! After 2 days, I was seriously wondering whether I should!

For those of you that don’t know Hyannis, and you want to know what Spodsbjerg is like – think flat long white beaches, with local people not posing about, with fish n chips (or local variant of), with warm friendly attitudes to all, with slow pace of living, and all affordable … mmm nice! We loved it … have I said that before!

And to think that we had no intention of even going to that part of Denmark!! That’s what I like about not overplanning, and its also what I like about not going to where everyone else goes to!

We only ended up there because I was enjoying myself on the very fast motorways in Germany … hey did I tell you about that – oh, it was awesome, I’m still grinning now! – oh yeah, it’s over in the Germany blog!

Yeah, we ended up on the wrong road to the wrong place, stuck in a queue with no way out of paying for a ferry which we had no intention of getting on, and which cost about £100! We thought ahhh, and then ah well! And before we knew it we were enjoying a ferry ride from Germany to Lolland in Denmark! I must say though that the ferry journey is pretty short and in my view is MASSIVELY overpriced! Also, why do all the Germans rush to buy overcooked chips on the ferry – weird!?

Real Luxembourg – Luxembourg blog part 2 …

I mean OMG! To put it simply, I could not have been more wrong! In part 1 of this Luxembourg blog, we clearly had a misconception of the country brought upon by some very bizarre happenings. However the real Luxembourg is simply awesome!

Azerbaijan land border part II

So we were hoping that the land border between Azerbaijan and Georgia would re-open in July 01 2023. However there has now been an announcement that the land border will remain closed until 02 October 2023! The apparent logic behind this move is that the country wishes to continue to minimise the risk from Covid19.

There has been a great deal of online chatter about the real reason for keeping the land border closed, when people can fly in as and when they like. Rumours are that Azerbaijan wishes to minimise the number of people fleeing conscription in Russia due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

There also continues to be much debate about whether the border will actually open in October this time around, as there have been many announcements and dates set in the past which haven’t been adhered to.

Worst comes to worst, should you just want to visit you can fly in to the country, however you cannot currently drive in. Turkmenistan is also now open, which may also help to sway opinion? Fingers crossed.

This is really annoying though, as it leaves you with only two options to travel across the world Eastwards from Europe – travelling through Iran, or travelling through Russia. For residents of many countries, travelling through Iran poses no real issues, however of those from the UK, the only way though is to book travel via a government listed tour guide – further adding to the cost! For those wishing to travel through Russia, visas are readily available, and not restricted in any way. Moral grounds may of course prevent you from travelling.

For us, we’ll now be travelling through Africa as part of our round-the-world trip! No great shakes here then 🙂

Luxembourg blog part 1 …

Every time we’ve been to Luxembourg something untoward has happened. Because of this Luxembourg has been a place that we tend to drive through without stopping! Let me give you an example of what happened to us the last two times that we did stop there.

A few years back we drove into Luxembourg city only to find parking to be incredibly difficult. So when we eventually found a space, we were relieved. On leaving the car, we were promptly met by a man who started shouting really aggressively at us in Luxembourgish. We thought wow, maybe we’re not legally allowed to be there – we were! Despite trying to placate the guy, he was relentless in his shouting. So eventually we felt that it just wasn’t worth the effort to stay! Bizarre!

Another time, we stopped for some food in a motorway service station. Having chosen what we wanted, we were met by a waitress who took one look at us and stated very loudly, ‘Oh my god!’ and walked away! Again … bizarre!

Who knows why these things happened, but it’s really shaped how we see Luxembourg!

Accordingly we’ve sourced a road trip route that should take us around the mountains – yes mountains, who knew? – and provide us with some of the best sights. Hopefully this will change our view of the country. We are determined not to be let down this time!

As an aside, on a positive note about the place, I do recall seeing lots of conkers on the ground when on a school trip at the age of 12 – that was good – at the time! 😉

A calamity of errors! Nice way to start your trip…

We made a catalogue of errors! Let’s put them in some sort of order, though not chronologically…

But before we start….

So anyone that’s ever gone on a long trip away from friends and family will sympathise with what happened when we finally got around to leaving. I couldn’t even speak I was so welled up! It’s not like this wasn’t planned, and that literally everyone knew when we were going. Nevertheless that family bond is super strong. Missing you fam already… but super grateful for the opportunity to do this round the world trip, so …

Error 1

So there we were on the train, second in the queue, waiting patiently behind an elderly couple in their posh beemer from Brussels. As usual the trip was super quick…never ceases to amaze me just how quick it is! Well worth the money over the ferry imho. The doors opened and we’re off… into France! Awesome.

The beemer shoots off like they’re in a race. Well they’re from Belgium, so presumably they do this trip regularly and know exactly where they’re going, as they wanna get home sharpish…right!! Top of the ramp, they turn left. We get there … no signs for the exit … this is not usual in our experience … and we’ve done this many, many times! So we follow the Belgians!
