The Zambezi River in its full might as it reaches Victoria Falls is a spectacular display of the force of nature. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya which translates to “the smoke that thunders” is a great reminder of just how loud and awe-inspiring this very special place can be.

Water water everywhere!!

It's that time of year of course, so it's natural that water and rain is a common thread in our posts at the moment. And raining it is in Kenya right now!

The Kenya Meteorological Department. forecast for May was for "slightly enhanced rainfall" throughout Western Kenya including the Masai Mara, but this week the region is experiencing very heavy rainfall. The month of May marks the end of the 'long rains' in the region, so we're picturing wonderful lush green grasslands readying themselves for what will this year be a very private, 'wildlife-only permitted', type of spectacle.

As unpredictable as the weather events that govern their movement, the Great Migration is actually always underway, and offers travellers the opportunity to view it pretty much the whole year. (Well, sadly for us, not this year!) And May is generally a month of transition too, where the great herds start to turn back in a northerly direction, finding their way across the Mara River and into Kenya's Masai Mara from as early as June.

WHEN THE WORLD REOPENS, HOW WILL YOU TRAVEL?

In this Antoine Janssens directed Beautiful Destinations video, professional guide and passionate advocate for responsible and sustainable tourism, Okwa Sarefo invites us to “Imagine a place where everything is connected by water…”

The message in this beautiful short video is an interesting one as we contemplate the world of travel beyond COVID-19. How will we travel? Will we seek out isolated untouched places where true sustainability is addressed? We hope so. We know we will.

Our Boundless African Journeys hearts, born, borne and fully nourished by the waters of the Okavango Delta, take us continually back to this beautiful place. Particularly now during our isolation, we can’t help but watch with excited anticipation as the annual flood edges its way across the delta’s floodplains, through the tourist hub village of Maun, at last dwindling somewhere along the Boteti River that forms the northern fringe of the Kalahari Desert.

P**a! A shout of union, solidarity, goodwill and good luck in Botswana. P**a is also the Setswana word for rain, and that it is also the name of the country’s currency, well signifies the precious value of rain and this life-giving resource.

The annual flood originates in the southern highlands of Angola during the wet season months from October/November through March/April. Nature’s fickle rain dance over this region determines not only the size of the flood, but where it will actually go. This year, there has been massive rainfall resulting in the highest flood for many years, not only through the Cubango/Kavango/Okavango River system, but also the Chobe and Zambezi river systems, evidenced by the brilliant water now flowing over Victoria Falls.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES: Hey! Antoine Janssens here. Since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated by the wildlife around us. I watch a lot of wildlife documentaries and t...

Where would you be now? If not for Covid-19...

I would be in Victoria Falls right now. I'd be witnessing water volumes not seen in at least a decade. In fact I probably wouldn't see much at all through the all enveloping mist, the 'smoke that thunders' through, up and over the cataract.
But I can assure you, even if the water levels were as low as they are in October/November, this is one thing you will NEVER catch me doing. Ever. (Need sound on.)

~ TANZANIA - GREAT PLACE TO START ~

One could expect an equator hugging country of almost a million square kilometres to offer a diversity of landscapes and experiences. Well, Tanzania certainly does not disappoint. Featuring no less than twenty-two National Parks, the Serengeti being only one of ten in the Northern Zone. And that doesn’t even include the Game Reserves and other Conservation Areas.

Tanzania Tourist Board gives us a wonderful peek into their best known ‘stars of the show’, and gives a great insight into what you might include in your first visit.

Tanzania is home to some of Africa's most famous national parks and the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the Serengeti. Most visitors will find themse...

~ NAMIBIA - MORE THAN JUST SAND DUNES ~

When you think of Namibia, do you automatically think of the iconic red sand dunes at Sossusvlei? The white dusty expanse of Etosha National Park? Or other desert landscapes that have become synonymous with Namibia? We often forget the dense wildlife areas in The Zambezi Region (formerly known as the Caprivi Strip), which borders Botswana’s Okavango Delta to the south, and both Angola and Zambia to the north.

Join us with Alfred at Namushasha River Lodge as he tells us a little bit about the biodiversity of the region, what he likes the most about his job and how the physical environment is embedded in local cultural customs.

Experience this Zambezi kingdom from 24 chalets dotted along the leafy river bank. Join the Caprivians in song and dance at the traditional heritage village,...

UGANDA – VISIT, REVISIT, REPEAT..

Each trip to Uganda leaves you wanting to plan your next trip to Uganda. It might be our primate cousins that first lure you, but you’ll soon learn that Uganda has so much more to offer. Certainly more than a single trip will allow – from trekking for gorillas, to taking part in chimpanzee habituation programs, cruising the mighty Nile, hiking the incredible Murchison Falls and incredible game viewing. Whether you’ve been to Africa before and are looking for something different, or planning your first visit, Uganda is an absolute must.

~ ISOLATION DREAMING ~

We're very fortunate and privileged to have stayed at or visited almost all of the Governors Camp Collection properties in Kenya and Rwanda. You can't help but to feel at home here; both the hospitality and surroundings enveloping you in their inimitable Kenyan way.
There are probably too many 'unfortunate timing stories' to mention, but we must mention this one.
Governors Camp Collection's brand new Mugie House in Laikipia opened this month and adds a new destination to their portfolio of Kenya properties. Mugie House has definitely made it onto our 'Isolation Dreaming List' for when this is all over.

We are thrilled to announce that Governors' Mugie House is ready and looking beyond beautiful! A huge thank you to our team up there and to White Elephant Tr...

JUST LOVE MOBILE CAMPS

We’ve been talking about the amazing water currently making its way through Victoria Falls and down the Zambezi, and so we’ve (virtually, of course) wandered down to Mana Pools.

We just love mobile camps, and African Bush Camps' Zambezi Expeditions showcases one of the most magnificent settings in Zimbabwe’s iconic Mana Pools National Park. Comfortable yet classic, the camp offers the kind of intimacy with nature that can only be achieved by immersing yourself in the heart of the wild. Fall asleep to the sound of the flowing river and chuckles of hippo and wake-up with the dawn chorus to a spectacular African sunrise. At Zambezi Expeditions you will connect with nature in a deep and meaningful way.

Set under the shade of winter thorn and ebony trees, each tent has en suite bathroom facilities with hot bucket showers and the main area has charging facilities for your all-important cameras. With unique access to the Zambezi River, your days will be filled with adventurous canoeing safaris, tracking game along the shorelines by foot, and fishing for the iconic tiger fish. An absolute must, however, is a game drive in an open 4 x 4 along the flood plains and into the heart of the Mana Pools UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Zambezi Expeditions can be booked through your trusted Travel Advisor.

This is as close as it gets.

The big male leopard sneered disdain for the driver in a private reserve near Kruger in South Africa. We’re told that big cats see the occupants of a vehicle as an integral part of that vehicle. This engagement tells me that should the driver alight from the car, the leopard will instantly see him for what he is: just another slow moving mammal.

CONSERVATION
As we reflect on the global shutdown of travel and tourism, it's a good time to also reflect on the importance that tourism plays in supporting vital conservation projects throughout Africa.
Meet Map Ives, Director of Rhino Conservation Botswana, reminding us of the dramatic decline in rhino numbers, and why constant and continuos conservation and protection is so critical.

Following the disastrously poor flood last year that resulted in much of Botswana's Okavango Delta being dry, it really is great news to see the massive flood that's on its way right now. Our thanks to M. Copham for this great sneak peak.
