Growing up in a loft was damn unique, and not always in a positive way! Lack of privacy for one thing, made things frustrating sometimes. But overall, I can't recommend it enough. The revolutionary choreographer Trisha Brown's famous "Equipment Pieces" implemented mountaineering gear to enact movement performances using local architecture. Her groundbreaking "Man Walking Down The Side Of A Building" is pretty self explanatory and presents a natural, daily activity in a completely inappropriate and abstracted location.
While Brown primarily worked in Soho, I include her in my Tribeca tour since it's so relevant to the discussion of the artists who pioneered the area.

Virtual tour of Tribeca on Tuesday night! Can't make it then? No sweat, just book your ticket before it starts and watch the recording any time all week!
There are several styles of architecture on display in Tribeca, from Federal to Neo Grec, to Romanesque, to Art Deco, and on and on. And it was the artist residents of the 70's and 80's who were able to stop the city, which was dead set on demolishing all of it and replacing it with cookie cutter high rises.

One of very few surviving "sky bridges" in New York, this one on Staple street is historic as it linked the the downtown outpost of New York Hospital to its laundry building. (Not the morgue, as is often thought).
