Did you know that the first black-owned bookstore in this country was also a stop on the Underground Railroad, sheltering a young Frederick Douglas on his journey to freedom? Ruggles was a devoted abolitionist and published the names of "Blackbirders", men who would kidnap free blacks and sell them into slavery in the South. He was a target of many and one of several noted abolitionists in what we now call Tribeca. Others were Sojourner Truth, who adopted that name during a service at the African Methodist Episcopal Church on Church street, and the first black owned newspaper in the nation, the Freedom's Journal, with offices on Varick street.
