The Gap of Dunloe is a scenic narrow mountain pass running north-south in County Kerry, Ireland, that separates the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range in the west, from the Purple Mountain Group range in the east. It is one of Kerry's most popular tourist destinations due to its scenery, lakes and waterfalls. The Gap, a public road through the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, is one of the most visited tourist routes in Ireland, famous since Victorian times.

Within The Gap of Dunloe are five lakes, Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough. The lakes are connected by the River Loe. Between the first two, Coosaun Lough and Black Lake is the Wishing Bridge on which it is said that wishes made while upon it are destined to come true. There are stone bridges along the way which make for breath-taking lookout points.

Johnstown Castle was built by the Esmonde family who came from Lincolnshire after the 1169 Anglo-Norman Invasion. They were expelled from Co Wexford by Cromwell in the mid 1600s. The Grogan family acquired Johnstown in 1682 by marriage. However, in 1798, Cornelius Grogan was hanged by the British for complicity with the Rebellion. In 1810, his brother John Grogan managed to re-possess the estate. He and his son, Hamilton Knox Grogan, went on to develop the castle, grounds, lakes and estate that we have today.

The walled gardens and hothouses were originally laid out between 1844 -1851 and retain their early deign today. They are surrounded by a high wall and contain 4 acres. The woodland garden includes two lakes; the garden lake covering about 2.5 acres and the castle lake occupies 5 acres. There are many pathways throughout the grounds around the lakes. The sunken garden is now a picnic area located close to the car park. Rathlannon castle is located in the gardens. This single rectangular tower house dates back to 1169 and pre-dated Johnstown Castle. Johnstown Castle has a subterranean passage to an old meatstore that may be seen on the grounds. The entrance to this store is topped and camouflaged by a one-roomed square turreted structure that provides access to the basement of the castle.

The Irish National Stud is the only stud farm in Ireland open to the public. For a place that has consistently produced equine royalty, it seems only fitting that its former visitors have included queens and presidents.

Mellows Bridge is a road bridge spanning the River Liffey in Dublin and joining Bridgefoot Street with Queen Street. Completed in 1768, after taking four years to build, the bridge was a replacement for the previous structure which got swept away during a flood in 1763. It comprised mostly of timber and was too weak for the high tides.

Being 250 years old, Mellows Bridge remains the oldest of all Dublin city bridges still in use. Later the parapets were replaced with cast iron balustrades and stone copings between 1816 and 1818. It consists of three elliptical arches and the stone bridge spans a total of 42 meters connecting Bridgefoot Street and Queen Street.

Doonagore Castle dates back to the 16th century, and was commissioned by Turlough O’Brien of Ennistymon in 1582, who wanted to have a castle on the Irish coast, to better monitor the comings and goings of ships on the Atlantic.

It is located on a small hill by the water and has a small defensive wall, protecting the main tower of the castle. The castle of Doonagore is often nicknamed “the fort of the rounded hills” or “the fort of the goats”, due to its geographical location, and to the high influx of goats in this area.
