From a trusted friend! Thought I would pass this along:
OFF THE BEATEN PATH towns in ITALY!!!
Lerici is my loved town close to Cinque Terra. All local, less tourist, beaches surrounded by castles, and real. Take a boat to the 5.
Casole D’elsa was a dream. It is close to San Gimignano and Voltera. The old ladies feed their 15 cats in the street, we ended up at a birthday party in the town square at 9:30 at night and we’re treated like family… the rolling hills that surround this walled city… I wept.
Lucca is magic and close to Pisa. I had a friend stay at the convent in Pisa and explore the tower grounds at night - less tourists and more unique photos of this amazing place. The nuns were amazing and the local art and flare of the city was accessible once the throng of bucket list busses leave.
In the Veneto region, Lake Garda is a favorite. It is dotted with little towns that will take your breath. It is in the Veneto region and makes day trips to Venice or Verona easy. BUT the hidden gems of Sirmione (walled castle city with natural hot springs where Roman Baths once stood, Limone Sul Garda, and Malcesine are only a smattering of jaw dropping beauty.
Padova has hidden gems of cathedral paintings that are worth a stop along the way. It is like the Italian transportation hub black hole but worth hopping off the train to explore. Abanno Terme is a town close to this worth booking a day/ or overnight for spa and soaking in the thermal waters. Castles dot the hillsides and vineyards abound in the area.
This is the Grana Padana, Prosecco, and an olive oil area of Italy, also. Take time spending a day in Soave tasting wines and walking castle grounds, touring olive groves, and eating. If you are making a day trip to Bassano del Grappa, add Citadella to the roster (it is a walled city and gorgeous). Going North of Bassano on the 111 will take you into “Prosecco land.” Mountainous and glorious the road to Villa Sandi will not disappoint. You can tour and taste here. The history of the Villa is as amazing as the Prosecco.
Buying gorgeous knitwear pieces of Versace at the factory stores, or leather purses hand crafted in a tiny Italian town along the way…dot the Veneto.
I don’t think there is a bad small town in Italy…Just don’t go to Italy in August. The entire country is on a state holiday and that means longer lines, less open, and heat.
Anyone going to Italy soon? I think I am going to go to Italy for 4-5 days in June before my Greece retreat!!
