🎥#ACISStudentTraveler Sarah - Going on an ACIS tour means having a Tour Manager who can guide you through all the culinary delights of the culture you’re in. Throughout our trip to Italy, our Tour Manager provided us with tips about the best food spots, as well as historical background about the local delicacies.
1. Italy is well known for its gelato, but with vendors on every street corner, how do you truly find the best of the best? Our Tour Manager told us that when looking for gelato, there were a couple of key things to look out for. First, if you can see the gelato that’s already a bad sign. The better quality gelato is kept in metal containers with lids to keep it at the right temperature. Those huge piles of bright-colored gelato may look appealing, but they are truly just to draw tourists in.
2. Travelers often comment that the bread they get in Florence and the region of Tuscany lacks flavor. However, there is actually history behind this! It is thought that salt was taxed too heavily in medieval Florence, so bakers decided to leave it out. To still enjoy the bread, our Tour Manager provided us with the great tip of ordering bruschetta or Tuscan crostini with chicken pâté, to still enjoy the Tuscan bread with added flavor.
3. In America, we are used to ordering large iced to-go coffees. However, Italian coffee culture is very different. Most drinks are meant to be served and drank at the cafe bar, as opposed to the American To-Go way. A macchiato, a drink many Americans get at their favorite coffee shops, looks a little different in Italy. In the US we would expect it to be a large drink, possibly iced, usually on the go; in Italy, a macchiato is a single espresso shot topped with a little bit of frothed milk. They are often drunk at the counter of a café as a sort of “afternoon pick me up,” which our group definitely used to combat our jet lag!
