Who secretly longs for a simpler holiday season? Maybe a little less over-spending, stress, delayed flights, and road rage? What if you escaped to a snowy mountain cabin to cozy up by the fire?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When our boys were 2 and 4, we moved across the country, leaving our families to follow our hearts to Colorado. We longed for a different kind of life, one that was about mountains, nature, simplicity. The plan was to go “home” after a year. Here we are, 15 years later, and still in love with Colorado! One year after a Christmas of horrible flight delays and a gut-kicking January credit card bill, we made a big decision. We told everyone they were always welcome to come to us but our visits would happen at non-holiday times (hurray for cheaper and actually relaxing family trips!). Instead, we took a fraction of that travel money and rented a tiny rustic cabin near Crested Butte over Thanksgiving. We only cooked and baked the things we liked, turned off our phones, and actually relaxed with our sweet boys! We got to spend one of our favorite holidays reading by the fire, sledding, playing boardgames, having a snow picnic, and sleeping in as long as the kids would let us. Year after year, we kept going back to CB, until many years later, when we were able to renovate a pretty little cabin of our own. 😉
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With our oldest son freshly off to college (!), I look back on that tough decision and feel so grateful. We had to say no to one thing to create a yes for something new. We still missed family, and some years we do see them and it’s wonderful, but when we chose that little cabin in the woods we consciously started a family tradition of our own. Now I truly cherish our sweet holiday memories of being cozy and quiet in the woods.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanksgiving and Christmas just opened up. We’d love to help you celebrate the holidays differently, if that calls your name…. ♥️

holding on to every last drop of summer but fall is just around the corner. 🍂 autumn in the rockies is a thing of beauty: over in a flash but breathtaking in its yellow blaze of aspen glory. after that it's all about snow, cozy cuddles by the crackling wood stove, and hot tub soaks under the milky way.we only have 4 weekends left in 2024 but we do have midweek availability and we'd love to have you! ✨ link in bio.

can I let you in on a secret? hosting isn't my main gig but man, I love it. I get to be as nitpicky and meticulous as I want. I get to fuss with decor, write handmade tags for guest treats, partner with local businesses and artisans, tend all the houseplants, and try to anticipate guests' preferences and needs. of course, behind the scenes, there are hard days and late nights, folks who can't be pleased no matter how hard you try, budgets, endless repairs & maintenance for a remote alpine property, all the things.

BUT as someone who loves travel, beauty, caring for others, and home, I want our guests to feel nurtured. I want them to open the door and feel a gentle yet persistent invitation to set down whatever burdens they brought with them, settle in, and soak up the deepest restoration that only nature can provide.

I never set out to be a rental host. I'm an English professor by training (PhD in Victorian Lit). I'm also a devoted wife & mom (two amazing teen boys!), author (latest a terrarium book for kids called Tiny Dino Worlds), photographer, traveler, hiker, avid cook/baker, bookworm, homebody (yes, the simultaneous traveler/homebody thing causes issues). I speak Spanish and lived in Latin America for a few years doing service work and cultural studies. but, hey, those are just my roles and jobs (we all have them!). inside, I'm one of those sensitive types who craves and cultivates beauty in all its forms.

in the smile of a stranger, the buzz of a hummingbird, tiny purple flowers poking up through concrete cracks: beauty is everywhere, if you take the time to look. up here in the mountains, beauty is so massively in your face you'd have to have no senses at all NOT to feel its grandeur. but for each of us, sorrow and struggle shadow our steps in private, unknown ways. you never know what burdens someone else is carrying. remember to be kind and share some beauty today.

happy first day of spring but it arrives late in the mountains! 🌲 march and early april are typically our heaviest snow months and then things start to thaw. mud season gets a bad rap but I LOVE it! hear me out.... trails are starting to melt out (spikes help), ski traffic goes away (relief), the weather is all over the place (but isn't it always in our alpine climate?), summer crowds aren't here yet (ahhh), prices are lower. some may hate on mud season, but what about the quiet, the peace, the sweet birdsong, that spicy awakening pine scent, and the dripping sounds of spring waking up? plus no matter what's happening outside, it's always cozy inside. the hot tub under the milky way and epic views through every window shine through every season. heaven! craving mountain solitude? we know a place. ♡

a little vintage, a little farmhouse, a little mid-mod, a little rustic and minimalist, a LOT handmade/gathered/upcycled. too many plants. treehouse meets 14er/mountain views. simple, natural tones. cozy. hygge? not sure what to call our style but with alpine winter sun streaming in every window it seems to come together okay. ☀️
