We spent the day visiting meteor crater located east of Flagstaff, Arizona as well as driving and hiking the Petrified Forest National Park. We ended the day by having dinner with a family friend (Maddie Flood) who now lives in Phoenix.

50,000 years ago a 150 wide meteor hit the Earth at 26,000 miles per hour and left a 600 foot crater. Very cool to see and we were happy we made the impromptu stopover.

Petrified National Forest was just amazing. The name doesn’t do it justice as it is more than the name. There were cave writings from the time of early man, Blue Mesa which truly looks like you have been transported to another planet and of course there were petrified logs.

Petrified logs are from 225 million years ago when the U.S. West mainland was largely underwater. Trees fell into the water, the lack of oxygen stopped the trees from rotting, the riverbeds were heavy in minerals and the minerals attached to the trees, slowly pushing away and replacing the wood. The trees look like wood from a distance but they are 100% minerals such as quartz.

We had a GREAT day exploring Grand Canyon National park today. We took the Grand Canyon National Railway from Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon. Fun facts: The Grand Canyon National park was formed in 1919 under Woodrow Wilson. The Colorado river cutting through the Canyon creates the depth which is 1 mile high. Erosion creates the breadth of the canyon. The canyon is 6 million years old which is relatively new in geological terms. 200 million years ago the canyon was under water. The canyon is truly awe inspiring!

We had a GREAT day exploring in Sedona, Arizona. It was our first time to Sedona and we all had a very positive first impression. Highlights were hiking and off-roading to explore the countryside and mountains. I got a kick out of the no passenger car sign as the only way you could navigate the off-roads was with special equipment given the volume of six foot jagged rock ledges. The suspension on our Jeep gladiator was a 20K addition and handle the off roads fabulously.

Today we had a super special day on our excursion in Ketchikan, Alaska. 10 years ago almost to the day we took the girls on a wilderness fishing excursion in Ketchikan. Captain Mike was the Captain of our fishing boat back then. We had such a great time 10 years ago that we wanted to do the excursion again. Little did we know when we arrived today that Captain Mike was going to be our captain again for our boat. The company we contract through has 20 Captains at any given time. What are the odds we get the same Captain ten years later? Highlights of the day were the fish catching and eagle feeding. If you plan on visiting Ketchikan this excursion is a must. Message me and I will provide you Captain Mike’s contact information. He truly makes the process a special one.

Up close with the humpback whales. We had at least 7 whales getting up close and personal with us today. Best whale watching experience we have ever had. They are feeding and getting ready for their long trip to Hawaii where they will then breed.

Visits to Skagway, Haines and Icy Point. Outside of the amazing landscapes the key highlight of the 2 days was the whale watching experience. We were able to get up close with the whales. 👍🏻

Today’s inclement weather in Juneau prevented us from taking a helicopter to the Mendenhall Glacier and a dog sled ride for 12 miles. We made lemonade out of lemons and switched gears to hiking to the Mendenhall glacier. It was a great hike. Some fun facts on Mendenhall Glacier is it is 1,500 square miles. The ice at the bottom of the glacier is 3,000 years old.

Enjoyed our train ride to the port in Seward. 1st stop on the cruise was the Hubbard Glacier. The glacier is about 350 feet high and the snow we see at the bottom of the glacier is over 500 years old.

All of the vacation excursions we have done over the past 20+ years have been great and memorable in some form or manner. However, there are a smaller percentage of excursions that simply are spectacular and rise to the top of being extraordinary such as riding camels out to the pyramids, para-gliding off the top of the Grand Tetons and fishing in the Gulf of Alaska where we caught a Halibut every minute for 30 minutes straight to name a few of these special experiences. We were blessed to have another top excursion experience today in Talkeetna, Alaska where we flew up to Mount Denali in a Dehaviland Otter-8 seater airplane and landed on a glacier on Mount Denali in the middle of nowhere. It will likely be the closest we ever get to landing on an untouched land. Less than 8,000 people a year experience what we got to today. The views were absolutely breathtaking and jaw dropping and we all unanimously agreed this excursion alone is the reason to visit Denali. Hope you enjoy the video.

We spent the day on a six hour tour of Denali national park. Some fun facts, Denali National park is 6.6 Million acres which is roughly the same size as the state of Massachusetts. It is by far the most rustic wilderness untouched park we have visited. Even the one road in the park is gravel once you go past 15 mile marker. It is the only park in the country where the Rangers still get around only by dogsled during winter (Sept-May). The park is largely untouched since its inception of 100 years ago. The most amazing piece of information on this park is that there are an estimated total of 9,000 large animals considered the big four (Grizzly bears, Dall Sheep aka…Rams, Caribou and Moose). That works out to each of the big four animals having about 800 dedicated acres to themselves. Not a bad gig. On our trip we saw Caribou, a grizzly bear, Lynx, arctic squirrels, Dall sheep and other critters.

We spent a 7 hour train ride from Anchorage to Denali National Park today. To say the train ride on Alaska Railroad was scenic would be a significant understatement. The weather could not have been any better for this scenic trip. Looking forward to visiting the Park tomorrow.

Alaska Day 2: Today, we did a cycle tour of Anchorage. We cycled the Tony Knowles trail around Anchorage and our guide and bikes were rented through Alaska eBikes. The views of the mountains across the water with a blue sky as a backdrop were beautiful. The highlight of our biking today was seeing a Momma Moose and her two babies. We spent about 20 minutes just watching them graze and were within 15-20 feet of them during the whole experience. Pretty cool!

Alaska - Day 1: We arrived in Anchorage yesterday evening safely after an 8-hour direct flight from Atlanta. Looking forward to the next two weeks of exploring this beautiful but remote state. I will say with all the media hype we have been hearing on summer travel we didn’t experience anything like the news staged us for. There was no picketing at the airport by Delta pilots, baggage check-in lines were only 5-10 minute waits (no waits at skycap baggage check-in) and we got through security(with Clear and TSA) in 10 minutes and Bailey who does not have TSA or Clear made it through the normal lines in 10 minutes. This was Friday afternoon prime time. We found the Delta and Atlanta airport experience to be GREAT as usual…..and then there was good Gluten Free beer in Anchorage. I’m in heaven.

Looking forward to our guided family biking tour this afternoon around Anchorage. Tomorrow we take the 7-hour Dome train up to Denali.
