Bali is up one place in our top 10 and Kuoni customers still favour an Ubud and beach combination to experience two sides of the island. Bali is great to visit during our summer months and peak wedding season, so it’s a top choice for honeymooners. Kuoni’s experts have also seen an interest in Singapore and Bali twin-centres.

Kuoni has added new destinations such as Lovina in the north of Bali, offering a less-commercialised experience of black sand beaches, local fishing communities and wild dolphin watching. Kuoni has also added new hotels in Lombok and the Gili Islands, which include the brand new pool villas at The Kayana Lombok; and The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas in Bali will be exclusive to Kuoni guests in the UK from April 2020.

Italy has jumped up one place in our top 10 and we still expect to see the usual lift in late bookings as we head into the spring and summer months. Puglia holidays are up, for both touring and single-centre holidays, with Kuoni’s Highlights of Puglia tour the most popular for 2020. Despite Brexit uncertainty, escorted touring in Italy is up +14%. While demand for the traditional favourites of Sicily, Sardinia and Tuscany remain strong, it’s Puglia that’s seen the most noticeable rise.

Kuoni has also added new hotels to its 2020 line-up, including Masseria Il Melograno in Monopoli, a converted ancient farmhouse with 1000-year-old olive trees, offering authentic cooking classes. Kalidria Hotel & Thalasso SPA in Castellaneta Marina is also new to Kuoni. It is set on a long beach edged with pinewood trees and features an incredible 3500sqm Thalasso Spa. Increasing demand from customers for 4.5* and 5* hotels has led to Kuoni adding six new hotels to its Italy portfolio for 2020.

Forward 2020 bookings for the USA are down, possibly affected by USA’s political backdrop and the weakness of the pound. However, it still remains a hugely strong destination for Kuoni and holds firm in the top 10. A shining light is tailor-made road trips, which are taking a bigger share of Kuoni’s USA bookings due to focused marketing efforts – including a ‘Great American Road Trips’ stand at BBC Countryfile Live, featuring a Mustang. California is Kuoni’s top-selling self-drive destination, followed by New England.

Road trips will continue to be a focus in 2020 for Kuoni. The company will promote popular driving destinations such as California and New England, alongside less well-known routes in Oregon and the Carolinas, both of which are now served by a new British Airways direct flight. Opening up new areas ensures travellers have more choice: Times Square or a boutique hotel in a quiet residential area of Brooklyn; the Napa Valley or Oregon’s wineries, craft breweries and field-to-fork dining scene.

Istanbul’s cultural scene is poised for the global spotlight in 2022. Billions of dollars have been poured into urban renewal projects that are finally coming to fruition. “I’ve lived here for 23 years and I can really see a major transformation,” says Karen Fedorko, founder of Sea Song Tours. Travelers can follow the newly established Beyoğlu Culture Road—a two-hour walking trail that knits together many of the city’s new and restored attractions. Begin at Taksim Square to visit the newly built Taksim Mosque and Atatürk Cultural Center, a once-abandoned 1960s architectural icon that has been faithfully restored to house an opera hall, theater, rooftop restaurant, and a façade where live performances are projected. Strolling down Istiklal Street, pop into the beautified Atlas Cinema and neoclassical Istanbul Cinema Museum before making your way to the Galata Tower.

The historic district has plenty of new places to stay, dine, and further explore the city’s origins. Luxury hotel The Loutrel (pictured) is inspired by Charleston’s renowned gardens, with expansive views from its rooftop terrace, and The Residences at Zero George provide longer stays for those who love the elegance of the award-winning hotel. Finally, don’t miss the refined, creative southern dishes at Lenoir, served by James Beard Award winner Vivian Howard, and traditional French cuisine at Brasserie La Banque. —Sarah Enelow-Snyder

Music lovers will have plenty to look forward to at the Spoleto Festival USA, one of the country’s most prestigious classical music events. The opera Omar, which will have its world premiere at Spoleto, explores the life of a Muslim African scholar who was captured on the border of Senegal and Mauritania in 1807 and enslaved in Charleston. Grammy Award winner Rhiannon Giddens co-composed the score with Michael Abels, best known for his work on the films Get Out and Us. Shortly after, the city will join its three main Juneteenth festivals into a bigger and better Lowcountry Juneteenth Experience to wrap up the celebration.

Rügen is the largest and most beautiful of the German Baltic islands. Separated from the rest of Germany by the Strelasund, it's linked to the mainland town of Stralsund by a causeway. The island's beauty stems from its diversity of landscape, including everything from flat farmland and forest-covered hills to expansive sandy beaches, lagoons, and lovely peninsulas.

A fun thing to do here, especially for outdoor enthusiasts, is to pay a visit to the Jasmund Peninsula, which in places reaches heights of 161 meters. Here, you'll find Jasmund National Park, popular among nature lovers for its abundance of wildlife, with notable species found here, including rare white-tailed eagles.

A highlight of the journey is the chance to walk through an 800-meter-long tunnel, complete with viewing windows, to the Schneefernerhaus station at the top of the Bavarian cog railroad. From here, you can ascend the eastern summit with its viewing platforms. And, thanks to the many ski resorts located nearby, Zugspitze is a wonderful German destination to visit in winter.

Part of the Wetterstein mountain range, the Zugspitze massif straddles the frontier between Germany and Austria and is surrounded by steep valleys. The eastern summit, at 2,962 meters, is crowned by a gilded cross and can be reached by the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, a cog railway, or by cable car.

Another great way to enjoy this area of outstanding natural beauty is aboard the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, a railway that runs to the Zugspitzkamm station at 2,805 meters. From here, the journey can be continued via a cable car to Zugspitz-Westgipfel Station at 2,950 meters (be sure to sample a meal at the excellent panoramic restaurant located here).

Located in the valley of the Regnitz, where the river divides into two arms, sits Bamberg. This old imperial city is the most important town in Upper Franconia, and is one of the best preserved of Germany's many charming old towns. It's also one of the best to explore on foot.

Your walking tour should begin in its old episcopal quarter, home to the 13th-century cathedral and the old Benedictine abbey of Michaelsberg. It's between the two river branches that you'll find spectacular Bürgerstadt, a small borough of Bamberg that contains the Grüner Markt, an excellent pedestrian zone which is home to the 17th-century Baroque church of St. Martin.

For a truly memorable experience, why not consider a visit in winter? If so, you'll be rewarded with the chance see the Marienplatz come alive with a spectacular display of lights and ornaments during the annual Christmas Market. Other winter festivals are held here, too, including the ancient, month-long Fasching carnival. Held each January to February locals and visitors alike partake in fun dances and events that have been held here for centuries.

Visit Marienplatz at any time of year and you'll still have fun. From March through to October you can witness the Neues Rathaus' famous glockenspiel perform its merry dance, its mechanical figures thrilling viewers thrice daily in a performance that has been enjoyed since 1908.

Location: Marienplatz, 80331 München, Germany
