Patagonia is all mountain ridgelines, Don Joaquin is similar to Botswana with splashy canters (and wild capybara) and Los Potreros feels a bit like England.

Riding in the Okavango Delta in Botswana has to be on everyone’s safari bucket list. It’s not a question of if but when to go!

This is a stationary camp safari so you return to the same, comfortable, ensuite tent each night. Each tent has wooden floors, a real bed, a writing desk so you can journal each day, a real loo, hot water and a view out over a lagoon where wild beast can walk into view at any moment. There is an elephant fence for safety around camp.

Some guests feel like a stationery holiday might be less adventurous than a trail but what’s more adventurous than riding to the action every day! There’s something so exciting about following your guide as he follows animal tracks.

This place is the real deal.

On top of excellent wildlife viewing, you also have daily laundry, a treehouse, a pool, an open bar, wifi and incredibly welcoming staff.

After a big safari you need a few weeks to process it. If you run into another holiday immediately you don’t get to reflect on the experience as much.

It takes a couple weeks to fully understand how a place made you feel. To figure out what it means to be human in that place.

A second happiness comes when the reminiscing starts. You forget all the physicality, the lost luggage, funny tummies, hangovers and sunburn. You see it for what it really meant to you.

In the end you live a trip twice. Once there and then again when it becomes a story.

After a day relaxing at the house we were up with the sun, riding through the mist. The Peshawar hounds sometimes kennel at the house. If everything lines up with your stay you could be in for one of the most otherworldly rides possible.

When the Kyrgyz first arrived in the Tien Shan mountains they were sky-worshippers. Tengrinism is the ancient shamanistic religion of the steppe.

Followers hold a reverence for nature. You can still see their signs and symbols etched in rocks as petroglyphs… and decorated around the seams of their yurts. Deer with great antlers, sun circles and humanoid figures. They’ve very similar to those etched on the rocks of the Altai mountains in Siberia where they originated from.

If you ask the locals they will say they follow Islam and have done for centuries. If you ask again, quietly, they’ll tell you that every village has a shaman that helps find lost horses, advise on marriages and clear curses.

The old way still lives on and when you’re in the mountains - you can feel it.

In the old days a team of musterers rode for days to bring sheep off the mountain for shearing or sale. These days it’s the work of a single farmer in a small helicopter.

The Patagonia Trail - by Jakotango 🇦🇷

One of the world’s most elegant safaris guided by two of the world’s best guides - Jakob himself () and .

Arrive by speedboat to the secret base camp valley in Northern Patagonia. You’ll explore the Andes on Jakob’s incredible horses. The crescendo is a ride along the Pass of Tears ridgeline with spectacular views all the way to Chile.

Base Camp is very comfortable. You share large African style safari tents, more like spacious cabins with real ensuites and fireplaces. You’ll relax in the wooden Cucina cabin between rides, enjoying a glass of wine or whisky.

Two nights are spend in simple dome tents on the mountain after you finish the great ridgeline ride and on your way to Felipe’s house, the neighbour who lives on the shore of Lake Trufal, where your safari ends.

We created Black Saddle after experiencing this ride so it’s not hyperbole to say it’s life changing.

Travelling to Kyrgyzstan is like jumping in a time machine 🇰🇬

You land in Soviet Bishkek with it’s street signs all in Cyrillic. Russian is widely spoken in the capital city. Lenin still stands in front of the Natural History museum. The main street is a wide Soviet boulevard that once had military parades down it but is now filled with families enjoying cool evenings watching concerts, playing fair games and buying helium balloons for the kids.

You leave Bishkek along ‘Silk Road’ street and follow the old Silk Road highway through the Chui valley along the border with Kazakhstan.

Once you arrive to Kemin valley you’ll see horses used for every day transport. They wait patiently for their riders outside shops.

Yurts are offgrid, though most have solar panels attached now. There is no refrigeration, instead shepherds pick animals from their flock for dinner that night.

Saddle pads are made of thick felt by grandmothers. Chinese tat has started to creep in and leather bridles have passed over with Calvin Klein branded plastic replacements. Horse guides will say it’s a shame but buy them anyway.

Outside of Bishkek Kyrgyz speak their own language. It’s Turkic and partially intelligible with people from Turkey. A lingual link showing their common heritage as both peoples originated from Siberia where petroglyphs, and the names of the lakes and mountains there are recognisably similar.

Malls look like ours did in the 80s and 90s with ci******es displayed over the checkout counters. W**d is illegal but it grows wild all over the country.

Alcohol isn’t sold in most local restaurants as Kyrgyz have been Muslim since the Arabs beat the Chinese in the Battle of Talas in the 8th century. You can still easily pick up litres of beer from the store though and small bottles of apricot cognac for a mere £3.50. It’s so delicious you don’t need any mixer.
