🙏🏿🕊️ We honor the life and legacy of the late Coach William Deng Holnyang—a trailblazer in sports in Sudan and South Sudan. From his early days as a national volleyball and basketball player, Coach William proudly represented Sudan in multiple international championships across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas—including the World Military Games in China, London, the U.S., and Brazil.

As a coach, he led top clubs such as Al-Hilal, Nasser, Malakia, Nationals Engineering, and Yanyum. He also inspired young talent through grassroots work at Juba One Academy and Nimra Talata. Additionally, he made history with the Dove Queens and Nile Legends women’s teams, winning local titles and representing South Sudan regionally. In 2023, he accompanied the South Sudan Women’s Team as a part of the extended coaching staff, during which the women’s team achieved their first-ever win for the country.

Coach William was a unique and influential individual in the lives of everyone who knew him. He left a legacy of skill, kindness, wisdom, and guidance in his family, community, and the basketball community in particular.

The federation sends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the basketball community at large.

We will miss you, Coach. Your legacy lives on. 🏀🖤

Gambella President Warns SSPDF Over Cross-Border Attacks on Ethiopian Villages

Gambella, Ethiopia – June 10, 2025

President Alemitu Omod of Ethiopia’s Gambella Region has issued a stern warning to the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) following reported cross-border attacks targeting Ethiopian civilians and villages near the border.

In a statement released this morning, President Omod condemned the assault, emphasizing that any aggression against Ethiopian territory is unacceptable. She confirmed that a formal report of territorial violation has been submitted to the central government in Addis Ababa.

The Western Ethiopia Regional Command is expected to visit the affected areas today to assess the damage and gather firsthand information.

Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has announced the permanent closure of its hospital in Ulang County, Upper Nile State, following a series of violent incidents that compromised the safety of staff and patients.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, MSF said the closure comes after armed individuals stormed the facility in April, looting property and threatening staff and patients. The attackers reportedly destroyed parts of the hospital and stole medical supplies valued at €135,000.

MSF’s Head of Mission in South Sudan, Zakariah Mwatia, said the scale of the damage made continued operations unsustainable.

“The extensive losses from the looting have left us without the necessary resources to continue operations,” he said. “We have no other option but to make the difficult decision to close the hospital and our support to 13 primary healthcare facilities, as they all rely on the hospital for medical supplies, referrals and technical support.”

Mwatia added that the security situation in the area remains volatile due to ongoing clashes, making it impossible to guarantee the safety of staff or patients.

The incident marks the second attack on MSF operations in Ulang in less than three months. In January, two MSF boats were fired upon by unidentified gunmen, forcing those on board to abandon the vessels and swim to safety.

Last month, another MSF-run hospital in Old Fangak was bombed, prompting the suspension of services there as well.

MSF has been operating in some of South Sudan’s most remote and conflict-affected regions, providing essential medical care amid chronic shortages and instability.

Tonj East, Warrap State – June 10, 2025
Reports emerging from Tonj East County indicate that the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) have launched a coordinated aerial bombardment targeting multiple locations within the area, including cattle camps and villages largely inhabited by women and children.

According to local sources and eyewitnesses on the ground, the operation was conducted using both military gunships and unmanned aerial drones. The aircraft involved are suspected to be linked to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), although official confirmation of foreign involvement has not yet been made by government authorities.

Explosions were reportedly heard early Tuesday morning in the outskirts of Rualbet Payam and Marial Lou, sending hundreds fleeing into the bush for safety. Several homes have been destroyed.
