What’s your favourite? Fish or chicken? This was the first time we attempted the beer can chicken and I must say, I’m hooked. It was so juicy I don’t think I can go back. Give it a go but it must be over coals for the charred flavour.

Broa de Milho or just Broa is made from corn and buckwheat. The traditional method is stone milled then kneaded in a wooden trough, then baked in a stone wood fire oven. The opening to the oven is then sealed with a metal plate and then the seams sealed with dough. This dough seam works as a natural timer. When the dough is crusty and brown around the seam, the bread is ready. In the words of William Rubel, International bread historian, Broa is a remarkable breath of our worlds tradition. A memorable flavour you can’t skip to taste at least once in your life time. Only at Living Culture Tours.

Canastro or Espigueiros are granite granaries built above ground on granite pillars to store corn cobs. The history of these little stone houses goes back to the 17th century. The wooden slats for walls provided good air circulation to dry and store the corn cobs for long periods. They were built in pillars above ground as this proved to deter rodents who could not climb up and over the flat base to get to the corn.
These Canastros are still used today in some villages. Legends tell us that, during harvesting time, a annual community event, all villages would gather and help strip the corn cobs preparing them for months of storage. Young lovers would eagerly strip the cobs looking for the “King & Queen” of the corn, which were deep red and purple in colour. If the young couples found these they were permitted to give each other a kiss. The evening of such an event would always end with the celebration of food and music. Another example of these villages rich culture and sense of community, which we await to share with you.the.good.life22

Introducing you to an authentic way of living, transport you in time to an era full of traditions, magical tales & glorious food

We met in London, got married in Australia and have been travelling the world since. Both with different backgrounds: Catarina has Portuguese and Brazilian heritage, Leon was born in Australia educated by Irish parents. For quite some time, we have known to have a great passion for travelling, meeting new cultures and eating authentic meals prepared by local communities in the countries that we would visit.

Our ultimate experiences are when we are able to connect with locals at their level and learn firsthand from their values, beliefs and customs. For us, it is truly exhilarant to celebrate the richness of different cultures and flavours in a way that unites us and bring us back to an era where simplicity was our only existence.

So we question ourselves how we could recreate a luxurious travel experience that would give an honest tribute to a community of ancestry knowledge and tradition, whilst in harmony with nature and mindful of the environmental impact this would create in untouched and quite remote villages.

Since June 2019 we have been working towards launching a unique tour program that will showcase the living traditions of the north of Portugal and hopefully inspire you to reconnect with your origins. Our partners are the local and genuine people who are the preservers of the local tradition, our audience likeminded people who would be prepared to travel in time, in order to lead this knowledge to the next generations, who are now the carriers of our future.
