Whale shark season is just around the corner and to celebrate I’d love to share 3 whale shark fun facts!

1. Whale sharks are in fact fish, which makes them sharks, not whales!
2. Whale sharks have 3000 teeth, BUT they are so small they can’t cause damage.
3. Whale sharks can grow up to 12m long (39 feet), which is as big as a school bus!

New Zealand Fur Seals mainly breed in New Zealand, but they can be found around Australia’s southern coasts. Rottnest Island is lucky to have a colony of these fur seals that live in Cathedral Rocks!

CORAL SPAWNING. What is it?

Coral spawning is the coral reproduction method. This spectacular event occurs once a year, for inshore reefs this event occurs after the first full moon in October, for out shore reefs tend to spawn in either November or December. Coral polyps simultaneously release s***m or egg bundles into the water from their gut cavity. This years coral spawning took place on the great barrier reef over the past weekend!

Comment 🐠 below if you’ve heard of coral spawning before!

The Great Barrier Reef consists of 3,000 individual reefs, 900 islands and stretches 2,600km. It’s so big it can be seen from space! For an idea of size, imagine Italy lying off the coast of Australia. Crazy, right!?

Thanks SEAmagine Hydrospace Corporation for the pic!
