The Truffle Hunter 🍂 Today on the blog, I’m sharing about our experience truffle hunting in Le Marche near the Umbrian border.

We had heard that the area was well-known for its truffles and inquired about where to go truffle hunting. Our host invited us to spend a day with him going truffle hunting. It turned out that Flavio himself was a truffle hunter and had an amazing story.

When retelling his story to us, Flavio said, “One day, I was there in my apartment looking over the city and I asked myself, ‘What am I doing here?’.”

He told us about how he was looking out over this big city, but all he could see in his mind, all he could think about, was being back home on his grandfather’s land.

He began to ask himself what he really wanted in life…

“I want a slow life.
I want a simple life.
I want to be in nature.”

He said, “it was right then that I made my choice. You make a choice and this was my choice.”

Porchetta is a style in which a pork roast is prepared and cooked. It’s a slow-roasted pork that has been seasoned and stuffed with herbs. This way of cooking the pork roast finds its history in Italy. More specifically, the town of Ariccia, in the region of Lazio, which can be easily visited with a day trip from Rome.

Though you can find porchetta throughout Italy, history indicates its origins to the town of Ariccia nearly 2000 years ago. Isn’t that incredible? This way of cooking pork roast has been preserved and passed on to generations for thousands of years. And here we are, enjoying every bite—just like the Romans. Ahhh, che bello. It is even considered the forefather of street food.

You can read all about Porchetta in my latest blog post where I’m also sharing this delicious recipe!

il macellaio 🥩 In Italy, it’s important to have a good relationship with your local butcher. Quality meat is important for most Italians and you want to know where your meat is coming from and trust your butcher. Most likely the local butcher shop is a family affair and ran with pride and dedication.

If you want to live more Italian, here’s a tip. No matter where you are in the world, find a local butcher that you can trust and begin building a relationship. Stay loyal. Ask him for tips on preparing certain cuts of meat and let him know how it turned out. Try cuts you may not be used to.

I remember one specific instance while living in Rome. My husband wanted a cut of lamb from our local neighborhood butcher. He didn’t have anything in the display case, but no problem. He grabbed an entire lamb that wasn’t completely butchered yet and sliced off what we needed. Talk about fresh and curated to the customers needs. Try developing this kind of relationship where you are!

The close to 2024 and the start to the new year have been quiet here. I’ve taken some time to rest and have been reflective.

I’m so grateful for all the blessings from this last year. Thankful for the big things. Celebrations, anniversaries, and birthdays. Watching my kids set their hearts to something and accomplish those goals. Finishing remodeling projects that I was sure were going to be the end of me 😂. Having the privilege to take a group of amazing women to Italy and lead my Slow Living Retreat there in Tuscany—a place I love so much. For new ventures and growth.

But so many of the moments I hold to from this last year have been simple ones. Quiet mornings and walks. A messy kitchen after an evening of pasta or pizza making as a family. Weekly sourdough baking. Sunsets and stargazing. Coffee dates with new and old friends. Heart to heart talks. Showing up when that’s all that could be done. Hugs after tears.

This reflection the last week has been hard but good for me. Good to evaluate what matters and what we put our time to. I’ve been thinking about the importance of choosing goals and what to say yes to. But also what to say no to. I want to say no to things that hold me back and keep me from my true self and freedom for the future.

I have always prayed about and chosen a word for the new year. And this year the word is joy. Amidst all the blessings this year, it’s been a challenging season in many ways. And that’s ok. I am ready to say no to things. But I’m ready to say yes to the joy to be found in each day. Each moment.

Here’s to the new year ahead! No matter what the last year has looked like for you, “tomorrow is always fresh—with no mistakes in it yet.” (Anne Shirley)

Buon Natale 🎄 Christmas Fettuccine anyone? Ok it’s not really an Italian tradition but it is a tradition my husband I have been doing every Christmas Eve for the last 15 years or so after the inspiration of The Holiday. It is Italian tradition to not eat meat on Christmas Eve, but rather fish or a simple pasta. Instead meats are typically enjoyed on Christmas Day. Of course this fettuccine can be enjoyed anytime of the year. Here is my recipe made with a simple, authentic Alfredo sauce. Buon appetito e buone feste!

Pasta Recipe:
-500g flour
-5 fresh eggs

Alfredo sauce:
-3/4 cup salted butter, melted
-1 1/2 cups parmigiano reggiano, grated

Instructions:
1. Melt the butter in a saucepan and turn off the heat.
2. Slowly stir in the grated cheese until the butter and cheese come together into a creamy sauce.
3. Add some of the cooked pasta water to help make the sauce creamy.
4. Add ground pepper to taste and add the cooked pasta to the sauce.

Homemade gifts are so special. I love the thoughtfulness and intentionality behind them. Last year, while in Tuscany, I stopped in at the most beautiful shop (). Busatti is a textile company producing linens and home goods. Since 1842 the Busatti family has been weaving in the village of Anghiari. Their fabrics are absolutely gorgeous and their shop is beautiful displaying all of the linens and products they produce for the home. I selected some lovely remnants of fabrics while there and this Christmas I used them to sew little sachets for gifts for my mom and sister. I filled them with lavender flowers I dried over the summer. They turned out so beautifully and make the sweetest gifts. 🎁 Do you appreciate homemade gifts?

20/12/2024

The Perfect Recipe for Christmas 🌟 Salame di Cioccolato is the perfect recipe for Christmas, made with chocolate and crumbled cookies. However, there are many variations to this traditional, Christmas dessert. I like to make mine with pistachios and hazelnuts. The bits of green make it extra festive.

If you want to get really creative, you can impress your holiday guests by tying string around the molded chocolate to resemble cured salami. Or, you can simply sprinkle it with powdered sugar as I do.

This recipe is also easy, low-cost, no bake, and takes little time to prepare. You can make it the day before and keep it in the refrigerator. If you don’t eat it all, it will keep in the fridge for several days. You can even freeze it. Just be sure to wrap it well in plastic wrap and then place it in a plastic bag. It will keep for about a month.

Comment “salame” for the link to the recipe or check out the dessert category on my blog.

When the weather turns cold and the temperature starts to drop, I like to cook comfort-food dishes like lasagna, soups, and heavier pastas. It’s also great to cook dishes that require the oven to be on for a good bit of time. It helps heat up the house and keeps the kitchen cozy.

Parmigiana di Melanzane is a classic, Italian dish that is very similar to a lasagna. However, instead of using sheets of pasta, you layer thin slices of eggplant. With just a few simple ingredients like tomatoes, fried eggplant, basil, mozzarella and parmigiano reggiano cheese, you can make the perfect Parmigiana di Melanzane—a classic symbol from the mediterranean.

Comment “eggplant” and I will send you to direct link to my full recipe. Or you can always find most recipes on my blog.
