Fresh insights from our Byway team: a last-minute trip to Paris is back on the cards after the peak of the first weeks of the games. Hotels and restaurants are dropping their prices due to unexpected quietness, meaning you can enjoy fewer crowds and a more laid-back trip.

Sade recently spent 48 hours exploring the tastes and sights that line the cobbled streets - returning with her top tips and favourite spots to grab a bite.

So, whether it’s a long weekend or a stop off on a last min Europe jaunt, Paris by train is back on the menu 🇫🇷

Do you have any Paris recs?

Sometimes it's all about the train carriage. We'd go so far as to say they're a work of art (some of them, at least).

The GoldenPass is one such train. A serious rival to the interiors of the Orient Express, without the exclusive price tag. Part of the Montreux Oberland Bernois Railway (MOB), it's one of the oldest electric railways in Switzerland, with the first stretch of track laid in December 1901.

With its plush, wood-panelled interiors and spectacular views, you can traverse the scenic route from Montreux to Zweisimmen in true Belle Époque style.

Don't worry, we've got you covered. Here are our top picks for last-minute trips - perfect for a quick August escape. So, throw a few outfits together, grab your sunnies and catch the next train to one of these corners of Europe:

🍷 Alsace: for the last of the summer wine in vineyards stretching out from Riquewihr, Strasbourg and Dijon, and picturesque streets in La Petite France.

🏊 Lake Constance: for Alpine vistas, a picturesque old town and the remarkable Mainau Island, bordered by Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

With limited accommodation that frequently sells out years in advance, we’ve secured exclusive availability for 21st-24th August in St Mary's, Isles of Scilly.

A sub-tropical archipelago off the Cornish coast, the Isles of Scilly are home to some of the richest wildlife and most pristine beaches in the UK.

Snooze your way from London to Penzance, before hopping on a ferry to the enchanting St Mary's - taking in azure seas and white sand beaches. Explore bronze age burial tombs and the Iron age settlements at Bant's Carn and Halangy Down, or check the village notice board to find departure times for crossings to the nearby islands. Tresco is the largest of the four, and Bryher, St Martin's and St Agnes have tiny populations and stunning beaches.

Sound like your cup of tea? Lock in your trip before availability runs out 🌊

Today, The King announced the new Labour government's legislative plans for the year ahead, and a big focus was renationalising rail. They plan to bring UK transport back into public ownership, by establishing 'Great British Railways'.

Labour pledged to do this within five years in their original manifesto, and have said this will improve reliability and ticket prices. We recently asked you what you want to see change for UK transport - and the majority of answers were around reliability and cost.

For flight-free to truly go mainstream, rail needs to be incentivised and better funded, so it's great to see policies on improvements so high in priority.

But do you think nationalisation is the answer? Let us know in the comments 👇

"Lateness—intentional or not—has its place, especially when it comes to holidays: from the Bay of Biscay to Tuscany, rural Alsace to the Côte d'Azur," says Harriet, "so don’t kick yourself for not being the plan-ahead type (I feel you), rest assured: some things are better late than...ever."

It might seem like we’re getting ahead of ourselves talking about harvest season this early, but the UK weather seems to think it's autumn already 🤷‍♀️🌧️

So, if you've left it a bit late to sort out a summer holiday, now is the time to start planning an autumn adventure, where you can slow down in milder temperatures and enjoy the sentiments of harvest celebrations.

Harvest season brings the ripening of vines, cruciferous greens and juicy citrus fruits. It’s a time to connect with the land, as well as local communities and practices.

But where do you find the best picks? Here are our top fruit-inspired trips - for plucking from a bush, sipping from a glass or drizzling on fresh bread.

Which harvest pick are you?

If you're running behind on holiday plans - fall in love with the golden, soft allure of late summer as an alternative to peak travel months.

Lateness gets a bad rep. But late isn't always bad. There are late nights (the good kind), under starry skies around a bonfire. There are late mornings, curled up in cotton sheets with fresh coffee. And late summer? Leisurely and romantic. Fewer crowds, pleasantly temperate, and a touch easier on the pocket.

Plus, travelling off-season benefits local communities - helping to spread tourism spend across the year and provide more consistent incomes. You’re also going to get more of an insight into local culture and traditions, which are in danger of being eroded by mass tourism in the peak summer season.

Here are our top picks for a late summer trip:

📍 Lake Bled, Slovenia: cool down from summer in the shade of horse chestnut trees and the glacial waters of Lake Bled.

📍 San Sebastian, Spain: September marks the start of the surf season. San Sebastian gives a whole new meaning to surf and turf, where days of catching waves give way to evenings hopping across Spain's best pintxos bars.

📍 Marseille (sans Paris), France: Marseille is an easy-to-reach smorgasbord of cool neighbourhoods, arty enclaves and coastal Riviera charm. Top tip: route via Lille to skip the metro mayhem of Paris during the tail end of the Olympics.

📍 Alsace, France: sip your way along the Burgundy wine trail through the golden vineyards of Alsace.

📍 St Ives & Penzance, Cornwall: Surf, sunbathe or swim on Cornwall’s best beaches that have long-drawn artists looking to capture St Ives’ glowy, romantic haze.

There's nothing better than going to sleep in one place and waking up in another 😴

Sleeper journeys add that extra experience to a flight-free trip - but also a few extra items for the packing list.

Our advice? A good pair of earplugs, a reusable water bottle, a toothbrush and an eye mask are the essentials for good night's sleep. Throw in a pair of comfy socks, a fresh novel, a tablet for movie-watching, and some snacks (if your train doesn’t have dining facilities) and you'll be cosy in no time.

What are your essentials for sleeper train journeys?

The UK is supposedly in for a pretty wet summer this year. We've got two choices: run and hide in a sunny spot elsewhere, or stay and embrace our inner pluviophiles.

With the chaos of heatwaves and overtouristed hotspots that have disrupted recent summer holidays - rain can bring a welcome sense of slowness. Like that feeling of getting dry and warm after a hike in the rain, or watching the drops fall from the cosy corner of a cafe. Or even a wild lake dip in the drizzle, if that’s your thing.

So, this one is for the pluviophiles and lovers of petrichor. Take a paddle in our favourite UK rainy spots (and maybe invest in a decent umbrella):

Yorkshire Dales: for puddle-splashing walks across the moors
Fort William: for dramatic hikes in misty mountains
Norfolk: for atmospheric beach strolls
North Wales: for lush, fragrant forest paths
South Downs: for cosy cafe and pub crawls

Are you a rain lover or rain hater? ☔️

If you signed Flight Free UK's recent domestic flight ban petition, you might have seen the government's response - stating aviation investment and the Jet Zero strategy as the main focus and priority.

have some great resources digging into Jet Zero, SAF and offsetting - why they're not as effective as they seem and might not be the answers we need right now.

Investment in rail feels vital if we want to encourage its use to reduce the travel industry's carbon impact. Conversations are starting to grow - with labour promising to reinvest in rail if they came into power.

Will these conversations turn into actions, though? Could banning domestic flights be the radical shift we need to inspire real actions for a less flight-centric travel industry in the UK?

Either way, don't feel disheartened! Getting 10.5k signatures on this petition is a fantastic achievement and plants the seeds for future change. Keep up the momentum and keep getting involved where you can. Look out for future petitions by Flight Free UK - and have a look at Campaign for Better Transport 's campaign in June, which suggests lots of ways to join in.

Hannah and Ben's journey took them through Swiss lakes and mountains, stopping in Lake Como before heading home via Paris - all captured in these gorgeous snaps by Ben.

"Travelling by train felt like a slower and more relaxing way to see more of each place we visited," says Hannah, "the travel days integrated into our holiday and became the activity rather than a chore of moving from place to place. The views we saw en route were incredible, and the time spent on trains was often peaceful and restful."

Their advice for future travellers? Pack snacks - and take advantage of the Ticino tickets, which get you on most public transport for free and give discounts on the cable cars and funiculars for beautiful mountain views.

Would you take their trip?

Flight-free does not have to mean complex. We're talking scenic trains and minimal changes, setting a laid-back tone from the get-go.

Surf, swim or sunbathe: whatever your style, the beach should feel easy.
The best time to go? The late summer months - when the crowds start to melt away, and the temperatures go from unbearably hot to balmy and breezy.

So pack your beach bag. Throw in a classic novel, a striped towel and an optimistic bottle of SPF as you breeze from carriage to coast in a single day.

Do you have a favourite easy beach trip by train?

40% of bookers said they would have flown if they hadn't booked a Byway holiday in the last year (vs 27% the year before).

So what were the journeys that inspired that final nudge to go from planes to trains?

Here are the top 3 Byway holidays taken by frequent fliers:

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Highlands and Hogwarts:
The appeal: the famous magical route across the Glenfinnan viaduct to Mallaig and hikes through the wild Highlands scenery.

🇦🇹 Vienna by Nightjet
The appeal: the scenic Arlberg Railway route from Zurich to Vienna, and a cosy sleeper ride on the way home.

🇮🇹 Alps to Italy
The appeal: seeing some of the most beautiful rail views in the world on the Rhaetian Railway, before melting into the tranquility of Varenna.

What's a holiday you've taken that made you fall in love with flight-free travel?

👥 3390 customers took a flight-free trip, 2,305 more than last year.

🌳 757 tonnes of CO2 saved. That’s about 185M cups of tea’s worth of kettle boiling.

🚞 40% of bookers said they would have flown if they hadn’t taken a Byway trip, up from 27% last year. That’s more people opting for trains over planes, saving more carbon.

Thank you for helping save three times more carbon than last year. For sharing the joy of your overland holidays and inspiring others to try. For being an integral part of the flight-free movement.

We love a good holiday snap and took his to the next level - sketching whilst journeying through Germany by train.

"After 30 years as a community artist and ' helping people to make things' - I am happily retired and it’s my turn now!" says Jim, "I really enjoy sketching on location and have been inspired by the worldwide Urban Sketchers movement. Recently I’ve taken to drawing on vintage books and music manuscripts - that old paper is lovely to work on.

I always draw when I’m away on holiday - the sketches make good souvenirs. My recent train-hopping trip with Byway in Germany was great, because everything was so well-organised for us, my wife and I could concentrate on enjoying exploring and sketching!"

An insightful article in by on sustainable summer holidays ☀️

There's no getting away from the fact that travel = impact. Sure, staying home is probably the most sustainable thing you could do - but it's very unlikely anyone is going to want or be able to do that. Travel is important for cultural understanding and connecting to new places, and when done mindfully can have a positive impact on communities.

Summer tends to be peak travel season (though climate change is starting to cause a shift in these patterns), but there are a few ways to limit the impact of a holiday - such as travelling overland, heading away from overtouristed hotspots or travelling off-peak in the late summer months.

Instead of stopping travelling altogether, it can be more impactful to adjust habits and reduce impacts by making more sustainable travel choices as a whole.

What are your sustainable summer holiday plans?

📢 Sign Flight Free UK's petition to ban domestic flights where alternative rail connections exist: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/649992 - closes 2nd May!

Domestic flights feel like an unnecessary and pollutive form of transport, that can often be replaced by a lower-carbon rail alternative. In 2023, France led the charge by banning domestic flights where rail connections under 2.5 hours exist, and Spain is planning to do the same.

At the moment, domestic flights in the UK tend to be cheaper than train journeys in the UK due to heavy subsidies on air travel, discouraging travellers from choosing low-carbon transport. Rail should be prioritised if we want to reduce travel's carbon footprint, and banning equivalent domestic flights would be a good first step towards this.

Do you think domestic flights should be banned in the UK? Let us know below 👇

Our Mission

Our mission is to make sustainable, thoughtful travel mainstream. We provide sustainable holiday experiences that take travellers off the beaten track, via trains, boats and more - but more than that, we want to create a movement that helps the world travel thoughtfully and sustainably once it can travel again. ‍ Byway is all about taking the time to appreciate the journey, starting a slow travel experience the moment you step out of your door. Our vision is that Byway will open people's eyes to a new way of holidaying, experiencing the lesser-known parts of the world instead of flying over them, and will blaze a trail into a new travel ecosystem growing up around sustainable, authentic and conscious travel.
