Summer of 2026, there will be a few new players in the Alaska game, Virgin Voyages and MSC Cruises, which means some competition in pricing! With the current Black Friday deals for NCL, I looked up the group pricing I have for Norwegian Gem 11-day sailing from Jacksonville. The pricing I have, for two passengers in a balcony room for $4019 is still better than the current Black Friday offer! If you add the drink package, specialty dining, WiFi and shore excursion credit, it is still over $800 less to book with the group!

If you pay the $350 deposit before 11/19, I can add a bunch of goodies also!!!

Oia, Fira, Santorini, Greece

For the last stop on our 9-day across the Mediterranean cruise with Virgin Voyages, we hit Santorini.

You have to take a tender to the island, and then have the choice of either a 6euro cable car to the top of Fira, or walk about 600 steps and ramps to the top, or pay to ride a donkey up the stairs. There are no cars where the tender arrives. On Celestyal Cruises, we got off early with cable car tickets and zipped right to the top. I have heard of long waits for the cable cars, donkeys slamming into the walls to bank up the stairs, p*e and p**p all up the path and people falling.

Being one of the later ships to arrive the port Saturday, after Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, I decided to book an excursion from Virgin Voyages, which included a tender directly to Athinios Port, which would avoid all the cable car/donkey step drama. We then boarded a bus to Oia with two hours to explore and see the iconic blue domed churches. Although mid-October the area was still jammed with tourists trying to get those 500 pics of themselves at the domes to show the world they were there. I get it, but take your pic and get out of the way.

Not bloodily likely. The narrow stairs were covered with people trying to go down and trying to go up, and people going down whenever someone wasn’t going up, and pushing and pretending they had never seen a line before. Then here comes the photographers with their clients, who somehow get to push past everyone and take ten minutes of pics of the entire family. Good luck going back up.

It can be quite crowded and annoying and makes you just want to join in the rudeness and forget to be polite. I think I would recommend visiting Santorini if you stay here and come early or in the late afternoon instead. It is truly beautiful and quaint with shops and restaurants but manners have left the building.

We returned to the bus and went to Fira. This is the Village above the cable car and donkey steps, and we ate and walked around and shopped, until we realized the line for the cable cars down, was really long. The best time to travel down is between 3-5p, but it seemed like all the early tours had come back and everyone was ready to get back to the ship.

For us, we had to pack and wanted to relax on board a bit for our last night, so I grabbed a few last minute souvenirs, while hubby waited in line. It took about an hour. Then wait for the tender back to the ship.

The cruise itself was amazing! I love the relaxed vibe of Virgin. We had three sea days with 5 ports and a few days in Barcelona and tonight in Athens before returning home. The flight going home isn’t so bad since you are awake, unlike flying to Europe where you want to try to sleep and it’s hard to get comfortable.

Although I love cruising to go to places I’ve never been to get a taste of the location to see if I’d like to return, the places I’ve seen on this voyage makes me ready to stay more than a few hours even if it means packing and unpacking several times.

Chora, Mykonos, Greece

Our first stop in Greece was Mykonos today. After the calm seas yesterday, the winds picked up and there were white caps on the sea, and we worried this port day would be cancelled, as we had to take a tender, a small ferry, to the island.

Wild cats are forbidden on the two Italian islands we stopped at, so we finally saw some cats! I love how easy it is to walk around the harbor, there’s a little beach, shops and restaurants galore, and some historic windmills to check out.

We ordered a ton of food and had a great day and sunset! I can’t believe we only have one more port on this cruise we booked in September of 2023!
