Welcome to Kyoto

Today we are sharing the tea ceremony film in Kyoto. We paired with Kansai Tourism Bureau and Chikyu-No-Arukikata to explore the wonders of the tea ceremony.

We travel to Kyoto to take a deeper look at practice said to “exemplify all Japanese culture”: the tea ceremony.
While the practice of drinking tea in a ceremonial manner was one imported to Japan from the neighbouring nation of China, it was the 16th-century master Sen no Rikyu who fused together key aspects of Japanese culture to birth the philosophy of sado “the way of tea.” This uniquely Japanese practice employs everything from manners and procedure to tea arrangement and garden landscaping in order to elevate the ceremony to the realm of art.
Everything from Japanese pottery, architecture and painting can we seen in during these ceremonies and are therefore preserved through the continual practice of sado.

Often considered the cultural capital of Japan, Kyoto stands in harmonic contrast to its political successor, Tokyo.
During the Meiji restoration, the nation’s capital was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo and with the geographical shift so too came an ideological transformation. While Tokyo forged a new Japan, focused highly on technology, globalization and modernity, Kyoto was able to focus primarily on the preservation of Japanese traditional arts and culture, cementing itself as the historical centre of the country.

We hope you enjoy this cultural exploration as we are guided through the history, practice and philosophy of tea by master Beihaku Ozaki.
