More time on the snow DOESN'T mean more money
.
.
.
I've done it before, and I'm doing it now...
My spend for a month on the snow has ranged anything from £1500 to £6000+
That's major costs like pass + Accommodation + travel
That's some peoples weeks holiday
Fun Fact: My season pass here cost me just £352, that's less than one week in the Three Valleys
I've done it the expensive way (Resort hopping, hotels, eating out) and I've done it the budget way (Airbnb, one area)
There's a tonne of ways you can make it work if you want to
I'm talking about as a remote worker or just a flat out ski bum - seasonnaires are a whole other breed
What can you start thinking about now?
Format
What are you going to do, travel around or stick to one area?
How long can you go for?
Can you sublet your place? Time it for a contract end?
Who you going with?
It's way more affordable to do it with 1 or more people
The BIGGEST decision and cost factor is ski pass
You will rack up a tonne of costs if you choose to purchase every day you ski individually
The most cost effective way of doing it is to get a season pass, these can be for one area or for multiple, some spanning a whole region.
I've listed ALL the major European Season passes on my website: Snowclans.com: Planning tools > Season Pass (link in bio)
These are this seasons prices.
NOTE: You can get major discounts if you buy as early as this Spring.
Check it out to get a feel for what you can get
I'm going to be doing more reels on planning extended ski trips / seasons as this one comes to a close so stay tuned.
FIRST
I'm heading out to the Maurienne Valley in France for 2 weeks and sampling some of the resorts there

Sure you've seen some ridiculous deals come up on Sunweb for lesser known resorts, but wondered if it's worth it?
Here's a few that come up regularly with a breakdown of the need to knows.
I've put this in order of best to worst options for a weeks holiday
Le Grand Domaine (165km)
pass usually 266 Euro/ 6 days
2400m Max
St. François Longchamp (1650m) or Valmorel (1350m)
Train+ Bus available or Shared services
Decent size for people getting to grips with skiing
Val Cenis (125km)
239 Euro/ 6 days
1300-2800m
A multiday pass actually allows for 350km of downhill skiing:
1 day in each of the other alpine ski areas (Aussois, Bessans, Bonneval-sur-Arc, la Norma and Valfréjus). if you're willing to make the commute via Local bus or car
Train+ Bus available, average transfer
Dévoluy Massif (100km)
213 euro/ 6 days
1500m to Max 2400m
Superdevoluy (Bigger, more facilities) and La Joue du loup (V Small, traditional)
Pain in the bass by public transport, no shared services
Transfers pushing 3 hours+
Les Orres (100km)
1550m - 2720m
Long transfers 3hrs + but train possible
More red's than the first 2 but still a small area
Purpose built
THINGS TO NOTE
Who do they suit?
Beginners + Intermediates who cruise, those of you who want to enjoy nature and not just rip through km after km of piste
ALTITUDE
Fine for peak season, a gamble for late in March
do not depend on lower learner slopes at all, conditions are an absolute gamble for the lower halves of these areas
Would I book these for the last week of March? Personally no
But they'll have some great deals for next season too so watch out.
I'll do another reel on the deals I would choose.

Tip: Hire a car and get shopping on the way
Résidence Méri-Bellecombe
3 Valleys, Brides-les-Bains

What are your criteria?
.
.
.
Here's the criteria I use to cut down my choices:
Well over 50% of Skiing above 2000m
I don't trust global warming, I want as much snow as I can get and that means going HIGH
Connected Slopes
I'm not particularly fond of areas that are split up into mini-areas, I want 100s of Km connected up by Ski
200km+ Area
Look, I do a lot of skiing, I get through a lot of miles - I absolutely LOVE exploring new places and navigating without the map (Until I get myself stuck in a loop)
Novelty is like crack for me
A lot of the time this is on piste because I value my life and can't afford a private guide 24/7
Easy Transfers
My preference is a resort with train all the way there (or close) - no traffic bs, cheap for singles.
Depending on if i'm on my own, if I'm travelling on peak days or not, if people are coming to visit in my trip etc.
The choice differs, but there's one thing about me, I ain't messing about with multiple connections
Only exception is I will 100% take that hellish 4hr bus transfer to Tignes for the snow
How do I find them?

Shortcut to pick your end of season holiday:
If you're growing more and more jealous of the ski holiday pictures, it's not too late even if you can't go in March
A lot of resorts plan to close right after Easter week (or even during) but we've got your options listed
Spring skiing is a great option if you're all about the *vibe*
Pros: Cheaper accommodation, cheaper lift passes, sunny days
Cons: Shorter Ski days due to slushy snow, potential of fewer open runs
Remember - these dates can shift forward if things heat up too quick, so I advise going right after Easter if you can
Closing dates
Obertauern - May 1st
Ischgl - May 1st
Arlberg - April 21st
Obergurgl-Hochgurgl - April 21st
Saas Fee - 21st April
Verbier - 21st April
St Moritz - 28th April
Jungfrau - 28th April
Tignes / Val d'isere - 5th May

🍻There's a few "beer cocktails" popular in France that make for a refreshing change🍻
🍋Panaché
Classic, half and half lager and lemonade - Shandy
❄️Monaco
Beer, lemonade, and grenadine syrup
Usually some of berry or pomegranate adds a fruity twist
🍊Picon
Adding a bitter orange liqueur shot 'Picon' to the beer, usually to a lager or wheat beer
🫐Tango
Just a shot of grenadine in your beer
🍷🍹What about if you don't like beer?
You'll almost always find a Vin Chaud (Warm spiced red wine)
or
Grog (Warm Rum - black tea, lemon juice, honey)
and of course, as you're in france, plenty of wine.
🥃Want to try a local shot?
Génépi is a alpine plant and popular aperitif, it's in the sage family if you want a hint at what it's like.
They also loveeee an Anise based liquor
Soft Drinks for you?
Diabolo menthe - Ever see someone with a bright green drink? It's Mint syrup and lemonade
Sirops - Essentially french squash, a lot of bars and restaurants have a variety of flavours
Schweppes agrumes - THE BEST soft drink, grapefruit fizz, way less sugar than a coke too
Hot Chocolates - You'll always be asked if you want cream (chantilly) or not, and can opt for a shot of rum or something in it too.

Thinking of switching it up?
Here's the top need-to-know about skiing in Spain.
The majority is in the north on the border of France, in the Pyrenees
Baqueira Beret (165km) // 286 Euro
The largest and arguably the most upmarket and best infrastructure.
It's well known as a stop on the Freeride World Tour, so you know that if it's big off piste you seek then you will be in for a treat.
If you're not staying at the base and choose a village, driving is the best option.
La Molina (145km) // 311 Euro
More local than international, this is the only one you can get a Train to, direct from Barcelona so expect weekends to be BUSY. This is a pretty functional resort, suited to a few days
Formigal (143km) // 294 Euro
Actually closer to the West coast and San Sebastian
A relaxed, purpose built resort. There's actually some challenges to be had.
Again, best to have a car around here and move between Formigal and Panticosa
Odd one out and the most famous of them all is actually south of Spain near Granada
Sierra Nevada (107km) // 310 Euro
This is the southern most resort in Europe but it's high altitude makes it a unique visit.
Very good provisions for beginners here, but not a lot on piste for the advanced. After snowfall however, there's a lot of good accessible off piste.
How are those pass prices looking for you? They jumped MASSIVELY in the last season, they're some of the highest prices per KM in Europe, averaging about 2.5 Euro per Km.
The European average is around 1.8 at last calculation, but I've got to re-run the data.
Buses seem to be a shortfall of Spanish ski resorts, with poor connectivity and timing.

It just takes a bit of forethought (or some last minute breath holding)
Dynamic pricing is big in America, but most of Europe operates on a fixed fee that varies by low and high season. Fixed fees are great because it makes it easy to compare and one less thing to rush to buy or plan for.
However - Dynamic pricing can work in your favour if you're a planner
All these resorts have dynamic pricing on their lift passes, some vary more than others - you can get over a 1/3 off pass prices just by booking significantly in advance.
eg. If you buy now (12/1) a 6 day adult pass in Arosa in March, you can pay 283 Euro - that's 20 Euros less than the European average, and 80 Euros less than a standard 3 valleys pass
Zermatt
St. Moritz
Villars - Gryon
Arosa
4 Vallees
Gstaad
Laax
Aletsch Arena
Crans Montana
Want to know more about these areas?
See how the price compares to your favourites? I have the full list of European lift pass prices on my site - head to Snowclans.com.

Now let's be clear, this doesn't let you escape the overall cost of accommodation and food in Switzerland, but if you are smart and compromise, you can.

This new promotion is a no brainer to take advantage of
Vialattea ski area is a huge 400km playground spanning the French-Italian border.
Once the host of the winter Olympics, this is one of the few must ski areas for those who like km on km of slopes.
Pick you resort wisely, depending on the vibe you want it has something to fit everyone - I've got the whole area run down on snowclans.com (you can use the link in bio or comment below to get a link)
I'd personally pick Sansicario or Sestriere to be right in the heart of the area.
You can access it by getting the train from Turin to Oulx with Trentitalia, then there's follow on buses to the resorts.
25% -20% off 6 day passes when you show a rail ticket from the last 3 days
Pick up the pass in Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana Torinese, Claviere and Pragelato
That's a huge saving on an already great value area.
€182 (instead of €243) or €195.50 (instead of €261) - low vs high Season
All you have to do is sign up to their free loyalty cards CartaFRECCIA or X-Go

Some things are just worth the luggage space...
So far this season, despite the 13+ seasons I've been fending for myself, I thought nah, I NEVER need these things, I'm just going to Yolo it.
I have regrets almost immediately
🥾Snow/Ice suitable boots❄️
This may seem obvious, but for the majority of my ski trips I really could have made it work without them.
The towns have either been cleared regularly or the snow simply didn't make it to them enough to be a problem.
This time?
Ice, rain, snow all at once
My knee ligaments are fighting for their life, and so are my trainers.
I should have worn my ugly ass hiking boots and/or invested in a new pair of Vans MTE's
TIP: If you don't want to bother with boots, you can get grips to add to the soles of your trainers.
🧤Spare Gloves🧤
Like I said, rain or heavy snow- it happens, even at the 2100m+ I'm skiing in.
I was SOAKED
1. Re-waterproof your gloves
2. Bring a spare set, don't be a hero
3. Check your Airbnb has a hairdryer
👕Gym/Swim Gear 🏊♀️🩱
Now, this might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I like doing something on storm days - If i'm travelling solo I'm not going to be going to the pub to apres on my own.
Most large resorts have a public pool if where your staying doesn't have one.
TIP: Public pools in france DON'T ALLOW board shorts for men, speedos or tight trunks guys. Embrace the continental way.
Anything you tried getting away with?
I'll be going live with all the conditions and recommendations from Tignes, Les Arc and Val T over the next few weeks.

Innsbruck Edition❄️🥨
Look, theoretically you can go anywhere for a short break, but ideally you'd want:
Short transfer
Don't need a big area (can save cash on passes)
Good value travel
People really underestimate travel cost impact, no matter the length you save on pass, hire and accommodation, but you've still shelled out on travel + transfers.
Austria is a great option because of its' infrastructure - Trains are cheap (€18.80 each way) with standardised pricing, and there's a plethora of results with very quick transfers, direct by train.
5 easy options, for various needs:
Seefeld (40min train) // 32km
If skiing is secondary to enjoying apres, spa's and wonderful scenery then this is ideal
For a tiny area, Seefeld has a great selection of accommodation and has that traditional town feel and aesthetic
Kühtai Glacier ( 1hr coach) //44km
If you're all about the skiing and want good snow reliability, this is one for you
A purpose built resort, it's no postcard, but it gets the job done for a day or 2.
Stay here or in Innsbruck itself (then you can also go to Nordkett, Innsbruck city's direct access freeride mountain)
Fügen/Kaltenbach (1.5hr train) //
Technically 2 trains, but worth it imo.
Well kitted out for self catering, or some good value, nice all inclusive hotels for all budgets.
The skiing is varied and fun, the towns are lacking, but who cares if you're there for 2 days and have a nice accommodation?
Hopfgarten (1hr train) // 270km
Part of the huge SkiWelt area, get a direct train and enjoy your time in this laidback town.
If you're going to need a bit more km, but are still looking for a relaxed area - the tree lined runs weave across this range in small sectors, it's a bit maze like in a fun way.
St. Anton (1hr train) // 300+km
That's right, the world famous area is only an hours direct train
If you want rowdy apres ski or big, powder friendly, area's or both - then this is the place to go
Probably not your cheapest option

⬇️ Here's mine, what are yours??

.
What do I mean by advanced? I mean relative to the average leisure tourist.
I can straight line it down most runs, and whilst I love the speed, I have the most fun when there's a bit more spice.
I look for bigger gradients, fun undulating terrain, variety and length.
1. Serfaus Fiss Ladis
I won't rest till I go back here, the only area I've skied so far that I can say that about.
It's not cheap, for passes or accommodation, but it's well worth it.
182km
323 euro / 6 days
A lot of the piste map is reds that really do mean red, which is absolutely fantastic. There's enough across the piste map to explore the whole area and not get bored over the course of a week.
I would say I probably wouldn't recommend for those with a group that includes people who like cruising easy runs all day. However if you're a couple who like skiing fun challenges and you have kids?
Fantastic choice, the Ladis ski school zone is huge.
2. Saalbach Hinterglemm
I challenge anyone who's skied a fair variety of places to not agree that the piste ratings on this area are a bit more lax than other resorts.
You'd have to pick your blue runs carefully if you were just starting out, that's all I'm saying.
I personally love it, there's some good decent length runs to sail down with lines that will get anyone's heart pumping.
Where they are graded blue and red, it means there's plenty of width to do so whilst keeping everyone safe.
Where else should I go?
I've heard good things about Verbiers terrain, obviously - maybe the Arlberg?
All advanced ranked areas are searchable on my website, save them to a shortlist and have them on-hand with all the details spelt out for you.

What one are you thinking of?
Espace Diamant!
The ski area comprises six traditional alpine villages, including Flumet, Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe, Praz-sur-Arly, Les Saisies, Crest-Voland, and Cohennoz. Each village in Espace Diamant has its unique charm and character.
Resort Choices Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe or Crest-Voland are the best choices for connections across the entire area.
Stay in Les Saises if you're with non-skiers who love nordic, there's tonnes of tracks.
Stay in Praz-sur-Arly if you want a short trip to check out Megeve's slopes too.
⚠️Safest to choose any of these resorts as an option during peak season, due to the skiing being below 2000m!
That's the same risk you run when you choose Megeve, but at a much lower price point.
1.5hrs from Geneva, it's a painless transfer

There's a bunch of groups such as 'facebook ski club' 'Solo on the slopes', 'solo skiers UK' etc.
DM me for a full list.
Cons: Risky one could say, hard to search, pot luck
2. UPCA France
These are All-inclusive weeks across France based in UPCA's, which are large youth hostels.
You get 3 meals a day (which absolutely BANG), hire, pass, accommodation and tuition if you want.
Starting at £600
They even do specialist instruction like off piste at varying levels for amazing value.
I'll be in Val Thorens checking them out this December so stay tuned for videos.
3. Solo-specific holidays
There's a bunch of providers who cater specifically for solo's, often hosting in a Chalet.
The range of areas covered is quite limited, but for a one off it's a great fix.
I've always found the groups I've been in absolutely fascinating people
Check out the snowclans.com website for my directory
4. Last minute bargains from tour operators
No shade to these guys but often the single person supplement and offering is poooooor
However, there's some deals to be had especially from Shared chalet owners last minute trying to fill rooms
Personally I panic too much to leave it last minute
5. Camps
Additional cost aside, you get riding buddies and for things like off piste, a guide so you don't die. It's a win for me.
6. Good ol' Airbnb
I don't know at what point Hotels become so ridiculously poor value, but you can often get a lot more for your money in an airbnb - A cheap studio is no problem on your own when space isn't an issue.

❄️ Magical unique area
The mountain range on the Spanish & French border has a lot of local love, but is still under-represented in the international markets consideration (if we park the resorts in Andorra)
The Pyrenees has some modest size areas that are worth considering, especially since the pass prices are well under the 300 Euro average
Spain
Baqueira Beret // 165km //286 euro
Formigal // 143km // 228 euro
La Molina // 145km // 258 euro
France
Saint-Lary-Soulan // 105km // 261 euro
Grand Tourmalet // 100km // 222 euro
Served by Toulouse, Pau and Barcelona airports.
⚠️For solos and couples, not all of them are simple to get to using cost effective transport options, especially the French resorts.
❄️La Molina however is accessible by direct train from Barcelona
❄️Baqueira Beret is served by Shared coaches stop in Vielha, which is 15min taxi or 20 min bus (ALSA - Baque-Les) to Baqueira.
🚗Those driving or getting a taxi, expect a minimum 1.5 hr transfer

⬇️What's the deal with this tax free paradise?⛷️
Skiing in "Andorra" isn't a single ski area
The biggest area is the semi-recently linked up Grandvalira - 210km
In fact, when you buy a multiday pass in Grandvalira it's the "Andorra Pass" and for covers Ordino Arcalís and Pal Arinsal totaling 300km+
Being a small country they are all close by road
👍Pro - High average altitude, simple direct transfers from Barcelona, cheaper average food and drink cost
👇cons - not all the infrastructure has been updated yet, some quite short runs, 2.5hr transfer, exposed above treeline skiing
⚠️ Tour operator search warning
Many of the cheapest options that come up will be for La Massana and Arinsal
These are on the smaller, lower Pal Arinsal area (<100km)
Absolutely fine for beginners, but especially Arinsal with the local area comprising of a handful of slopes, not the best base for a fulfilling ski holiday
❄️🏂 Grandvalira Options
There's 5 resorts to choose from...
✳️Pas de la Casa
Younger focus
Lively apres selection
Not the best looking resort
Cheaper end of the scale - purpose built dominates
✴️Soldeu
Busy main road - not the most family friendly
Lively atmosphere
Not a huge selection of off-ski alternative activities
⭕El Tarter
Most accommodation is within easy distance of the slopes
Good restaurant selection
More subdued apres
When it comes to quick access to the focus of the ski area, Camillo and Encamp are slightly further removed.
❇️Camillo
has it's own small sector of runs
Including a great kids/ families area
Great for those who want a quiet holiday
🔵Encamp
Has no return ski runs
The "Funicamp" gondola takes you all the way up to the top of the ski area in 15min.
First resort you encounter on the way from Spain
