The Kaparkan Falls, Abra

Fall Break Adventure in Chihuaha

The use of ATVs as a major means of transportation in the mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico showcases the region's rugged terrain and adventurous spirit. These powerful vehicles enable locals and visitors alike to explore the breathtaking landscapes and access remote areas with ease. The ATV rides in Chihuahua offer an exhilarating experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while enjoying the thrill of off-road adventures.

When I visited Chihuahua in the autumn of 2018, navigating through the uneven, unpaved roads of the ranch, where I stayed for a few days, in almost freezing temperatures was no easy feat. Pero the excitement and joy I experienced made it an unforgettable adventure. Despite the challenges, riding an ATV through the mountains was incredibly fun, and I would eagerly take the opportunity to do it again.

Alam mo bang that 7-year-old in the picture drove with remarkable skill at hanggang kalingkingan lang ako? And those ladies, they drove like true road warriors, showcasing impressive prowess behind the wheel. Kumbaga sa math, ikaw nagdo-drawing ka pa lang ng cake na nagrerepresent ng fraction, sila naman nag-iintegrate by partial fractions na. Mapapa-wow ka nalang.

Although the rugged road wasn't captured in the pictures, but comparing it to the roads of Homonhon from Bitaugan to Pagbabangnan in 2017 (which some parts might have been paved by now) and the steep road leading to Locsoon Beach, the challenges in Chihuahua were even more demanding. At baka mas demanding din kesa jowa mo 😆. There were rocky sections where they had to tilt the ATV at a certain angle to avoid crashing. In one scary part of the road, where there was a massive tree on one side while on the other side was a sheer cliff, only one ATV could pass through. Ilang beses kaya ako nagpa-sub, haha, while the child effortlessly enjoyed the ride. Pero 'pag patag na ang daan, ako naman, tapos pa-picture...obvious! Haha! We were a group of five on this adventure, and we had three ATVs at our disposal. Fun. Fun. Fun.

TRIVIA: Chihuahua is the largest state in Mexico. The Chihuahua dog breed's name comes from the state of Chihuahua, where it is believed to have originated. This dog breed is recognized as one of the oldest and smallest dog breeds in the world.

On November 8th, 2013, the devastating impact of Super Typhoon Haiyan, also known locally as Super Typhoon Yolanda, shook the city of Tacloban, Philippines. The M/V Eva Jocelyn, anchored in the city harbor, tragically ran aground due to a 7-meter high storm surge propelled by winds exceeding 370km/hr. The storm surge claimed the lives of residents in Brgy. Anibong, Tacloban City, and left a trail of destruction throughout the region. The death toll reached approximately 6,300, surpassing the casualties of the June 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption by 7.4 times.

The shipwreck of M/V Eva Jocelyn serves as a poignant memorial, representing the lives lost in the City of Tacloban on that apocalyptic day. It stands as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Taclobanons, who have since advocated for resiliency and adaptation to the new normal in the face of future challenges, a legacy that will endure for generations to come.

On the eve of the second year anniversary commemoration, November 7, 2015, this memorial was unveiled, serving as a symbol of remembrance and reflection.

Having resided in Tacloban for 12 years, from June 2005 to June 2017, this city holds a special place in my heart. Although I was overseas during the devastating Super Typhoon, I witnessed the profound impact it had on numerous friends and their families. As I stand here today, visiting this location for the first time, memories of what Tacloban used to be before that fateful Friday seem distant and blurred. Almost a decade has passed since that tragic event, further emphasizing the resilience and progress the city has made in the face of adversity.

Yeah, it's been almost 10 years! The city and the people have moved on and continue to move forward.
