Next Wednesday, internationally acclaimed composer and performer Laura Cannell
will be at Norwich Arts Centre, to perform music from her latest solo album ‘The Rituals of Hildegard Reimagined’ taking inspiration from the 12th century composer, nun, herbalist and mystic Hildegard von Bingen.

The evening will also feature from from her current monthly release series, ‘A Year of Lore’ in which she has released an EP every month in 2024. Exploring real and imagined Lore such as Sealore, Earthlore, Riverlore and Mountainlore, these have been broadcast on both BBC 6Music and Radio 3.

Based in East Anglia, Cannell's music straddles the worlds of contemporary and ancient music; semi-composed and semi-improvised, it draws on the emotional influences of the landscape and explores the space between early and experimental music.

From today, the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich will be asking, Why Do We Take Drugs?

For this third season of asking a big societal question, the museum will present three separate exhibitions brought together by this collective theme.

Open now are 'Ayahuasca & Art of the Amazon' - which considers the impact of the mind-altering, psychotropic vine ayahuasca within Western Amazonian social life - and 'Power Plants: Intoxicants, Stimulants and Narcotics' - which explores our use over centuries of the psychoactive properties of plants as an integral part of social, ceremonial and religious life.

Opening in November is the photographic exhibition 'He**in Falls'.

The season will be complemented by new additions to the permanent collection by sculptor Lindsey Mendick, and a new commission for the Sculpture Park by Ivan Morison.

Think of the National Trust and you might imagine stately homes with manicured gardens. Possibly you're thinking about scones. Norfolk and Suffolk have our fair share of grand estates; but like so many other things, we have some more unexpected experiences for visitors to enjoy.

In Bury St Edmunds, you can take in a play at the only surviving Regency playhouse in the UK. At Great Yarmouth, step back from the lights and sounds of the seafront, and into the room where Charles I's death was plotted.

Take a boat out to a grey seal colony, visit a windpump under big Norfolk skies, experience the hauntingly beautiful burial ground at Sutton Hoo, see the striking timber framed Guildhall at Lavenham.

Hope Trees is a dance-theatre piece celebrating the connection between humans and nature, and asking if we are capable of putting nature first. The work is inspired by a centuries-old yew tree in Italy, which survived recent floods and under which Dante wrote some of The Divine Comedy.

The Garage's artistic partners Dance In, are an Italian company who believe that dance is a universal language, capable of overcoming physical barriers, and who place Inclusivity at the heart of their work.

Each year, Houghton Hall presents a new sculptural installation, animating its grounds and internal spaces and complementing its permanent collection.

This year, Houghton boasts exhibitions by two illustrious artists. Throughout the grounds are 100 life-size sculptures by Anthony Gormley, placed to form a single horizontal plane across the landscape. Inside the Hall are old and new works by world-renowned ceramicist Magdalene Odundo. Her distinctive pieces are installed to create interplay with the traditional grandeur of Houghton's State Rooms.

Houghton Hall is perfect for a summer day out. With acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and impressive gardens to explore and centuries of history within. Permanent installations include Jeppe Hein's 'Waterflame' in the walled garden; Rachel Whiteread's concrete 'Houghton Hut' nestled in a copse; and James Turrell's wonderfully relaxing 'Skyspace'.

🗓 To 31 October (note Magdalene Odundo's exhibition closes on 29 September)

This exhibition explores the impact and influence that photography has had on shaping – and in some cases distorting - the narrative of major global events. Featuring more than 100 works, The Camera Never Lies charts a global century of documentation and manipulation.

Featuring some of the most iconic news photographs in the world, the first part of the exhibition explores how single photographs have come to represent and define events through their repeated use in print journalism. The second part examines how modern practitioners are using research to inform their imagery, and how they work with much more agency than in the previous century - having more control than the picture editors at newspapers.

🗓Until 20 October

The Sainsbury Centre operates Pay What You Want ticketing. The museum also has a fascinating permanent collection, two cafes, a shop and an outdoor sculpture park.

Premiering this month at Norwich Theatre Playhouse, The Highwayman is a tale of love, larceny, and 17th-century debauchery.

Based on the classic poem by Alfred Noyes, Kitty Morgan's brand new musical will take audiences on a full-throttle musical gallop through the grimy underbelly of 1600s England, where love is as dangerous as a back-alley brawl. With a live band reimagining tavern tunes and folk ballads in contemporary arrangements, this is one not to be missed.

After opening in Norwich, The Highwayman will also be touring to Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.
