The Ruru region is considered a heritage of religious, historical, cultural and archeological importance. Ridi has a historic Rishikesh temple replaced by Manimukunda Sen. Their bravery was conspicuous in many battles on many fronts. One such front was the Palpa-Butwal region where the Nepali forces under Colonel Ujir Singh Thapa soundly defeated the British forces under Colonel Joe Sullivan Wood. It was a battle in which the awed British could see for themselves the immense courage and skillful strategic ability of the Nepali force.

The Palpa-Butwal front was one of the four fronts in which the Indian British Army engaged the Nepal Army, the other fronts being: Bijaypur in the eastern region, Makwanpur in the central region, and the region beyond Mahakali in the far-west. While the foreign aggressors managed to gain the upper hand in most of the fronts, due primarily to their superior weapons and greater manpower, Palpa-Butwal became a battleground in which the Nepali forces prevailed.

The commander of this region, Colonel Ujir Singh Thapa, was well prepared; having arranged for adequate weapons, and the construction of fortified garrisons, and bridges and culverts. He was also as devout a man as are most Nepalis, and before going to battle, he made it a point to visit the many temples in the region to seek blessings of various gods and goddesses. One of the most sacred temples was the temple of the 16-handed Mahsasur Mardini Bhagwati, located in the center of Tansen, the district headquarter of Palpa.

Touching the goddess’s feet, the colonel made a vow that if they became victorious, he would build a grand temple, and conduct a Sindur Jatra (a victory parade) around the district in the deity’s honor. Then, he led his forces into battle, and in Jitgadhi of Butwal, forced the aggressors to retreat numerous times. Victory was theirs, and keeping his sacred vow, he ordered the building of a magnificent three-storied temple that took four years to be completed (1815-1819). The temple’s gajur (pinnacle) was made of gold, the colonel having donated gold equaling his height, and the canopy over the goddess was of silver. The 16 hands of the goddess were made of asta-dhatu (an amalgamation of eight metals).

Having done all this, he then began the Sindur Jatra in 1820, on the holy day of Bhadra Krishna Nawami, in honor of the goddess Mahisasur Mardini Bhagwati, who is also known as Palpa Bhagwati. While there are numerous jatras (parades, or more correctly, festivals) all over the country at various times of the year, the Palpa Bhagwati Sindur Jatra holds special significance, because it is a festival to commemorate a crucial time in the country’s history, a festival to celebrate a famous victory. The Sindur Jatra is held every year in Tansen with great enthusiasm, and is a reminder to all of the heroism of the soldiers of Nepal. It is now 200 hundred years since the end of the Anglo-Nepal War, and a good time to recall sacrifices of the past to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.

In 1887 General Khadga Samsher Rana was forced to drop his royal titles and was sent to Palpa-Gauda as the Western Commander in Chief of Nepal. At Palpa-Gauda in 1892 Khadga Shumsher's beloved youngest wife Tej Kumari Devi died and within a year Khadga built a palace and named after his wife as Rani Mahal (Literary translates as Queens Palace). He also named the nearby forest as Rani Ban (Rani forest) along with naming the Ghats as Rani Ghat.
In 1902, Khadga Samsher Rana along with his family fled from Nepal to India abandoning Rani Mahal which resulted in negligence of Rani mahal and eventually this palace structure started crumbling.

(Narayansthan, Tansen)

At the bottom of Asan Tole (the steep road running east from Sitalpati), the Amar Narayan Mandir is a classic three-tiered, pagoda-style wooden temple. The mandir was built in 1807 by Amar Singh Thapa, the first governor of Tansen, and it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful temples outside Kathmandu Valley. The carved wooden deities are exquisite; note the erotic scenes on the roof struts, and the alternating skulls and animal heads on the lintel.

Devotees come here every evening to light butter lamps in honour of the patron deity, Lord Vishnu.

At the start of the steps to the Amar Narayan Temple is the similar but smaller Mahadev Mandir, a Shiva temple.

Tansen’s main attraction is its Newari charm and distinct medieval feel. The stone paved narrow streets with adjoining small house decorated with carved doors and windows make the old Tansen a must visit place in Nepal.

The bells of Hindu temples and religious chants make these misty views more close to your inner peace and adventure. Until the rise of the Shahs, Tansen ( Palpa ) was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Nepal. Troops from Palpa even came close to conquering Kathmandu in the 16th century under the leadership of King Mukunda Sen.

Tansen is a Municipality and the administrative center of Palpa District in the "hills" of western Nepal. It is located on the highway between Butwal and Pokhara, on the crest of the Mahabharat Range or Lesser Himalaya overlooking the valley of the Kaligandaki River to the north. The town enjoys a moderate climate with temperatures rarely exceeding 30 Celsius or going below freezing. The highway bypasses the town center on the west, protecting pedestrian amenities in the central maze of steep, narrow, winding alleys lined with Newari shop-Houses and temples. Besides trade, local Newars are known for traditional metalwork and producing dhaka cloth used in traditional jackets and topis. The most important landmark is the octagonal Pavilion in the middle of Sitalpati, the main market square.

Tansen was the capital of the Magar kingdom Tanahun, one of the most powerful regional principalities before the rise of the Shah dynasty. It even came close to conquering Katmandu in the 16th century under the leadership of Mukunda Sen. Local Magar kings lost influence in the 18th century and Tansen became a Newari bazaar on the important trade route between India and Tibet via the Kaligandaki River and Mustang. Because it was a district administrative center of the Kingdom of Nepal, Maoists targeted Tansen several times during the Nepalese Civil War, including a major assault on the historic Durbar (palace) compound in 2006.

Nearby Srinagar Danda (hill) offers a panoramic view of the high Himalaya. From west to east, the Kanjiroba, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Mansiri, Ganesh and Langtang groups are in sight. Other nearby attractions include Ranighat, a Rana palace next to the Kaligandaki River, and Ridi Bazaar, a major Hindu pilgrimage destination at the auspicious confluence of the Kaligandaki and Ridi Rivers. A large mela is held there on Maghe Sankranti
