antonahillphoto I’m looking through my camera roll, thinking back over this pandemic and find myself asking the questions - ‘What moments do I treasure?’ and ‘What am I proud of?’
I feel I can simplify my conclusion into one sentence:

Spending time with people in the mountains.

Thank you to all those who have trusted me to guide you, and thank you to those who have invested your own skill and experiences to better me.

"It's hard to put in to words how awesome this experience was. Ross was a super cool dude and I enjoyed the conversation during our challenging climb. He also doesn't take a cookie cutter approach to things and customized the experience based on my skill level etc. I highly recommend him and will book again the next time I am in Washington."

Climbing to a mountain's peak and then watching the setting/rising sun carve out shadows along it's face are two things you don't easily forget.
This mountain/hill isn't prominent enough to have been given an official name but it is officially one of my secret spots ☺️

A photo from someone else's perspective can speak a whole different story. Here I am climbing on all fours on a steep snow field that looks totally badass, right?. But what was the story from my perspective? Trevin, who descended this section before me, glissaded (control slid on his butt) down this to a few hundred feet below me where the snow slope leved out into a safe stopping point. I was going to follow suit but ended up chickening out and down-climbing part of it. For me, I knew it felt like the safest way to go at the time.

Moral of the story: Doing YOUR thing and being safe is more badass than you realize
***
Also, doing it along with another photographer so you get those shots when it counts!

When you know your expectations are high theres those times when you just gotta put in the long nights, the sweat, and tears to do it yourself.
Just don’t tell anyone it’s taken me three months to get this done 🤣

“We hiked Mount Margaret with Ross and not only were the photos amazing but we had a great time spending time together. Ross is a super kind person and fun to share an adventure with. I love how open he was sharing his thoughts on photography and I was able to learn a lot during our hike. We ended up framing a couple of the pictures he took and gave them to friends and family for Christmas. We definitely felt comfortable with him leading us on a trail we had never done before. Thanks again for being awesome Ross! And if you are thinking about taking an adventure with him definitely do it!”

Thanks Cody Axthelm / Dad Dare for the kind words! And for your patience when I walked us right past our turn off haha

Self assigned significance is huge. This canyon, the Yakima River Canyon has that for me. In the years of my later youth, in , I didn't see beauty in the Southeastern landscapes of Washington. (I had come from W Montana, Alaska, and SW Oregon.) For college, I moved to to attend which meant I was making the dreaded drive back and forth often. That's when I found the scenic detour of this canyon. I was in a time of transition to needing to explore further and further from "home". Which ultimately took me to Asia for 6 years. But this canyon had stole a small piece of my heart, which I always had to come back for. And it played a role in opening my eyes to the beauty that rolls a little further east with the tumbleweeds 🤣

The essentials are the stuff you need with you. But what is it that's essential? Sometimes our minds tell us we need a thing, and another thing, and so on. We end up weighted down and sometimes even crippled from beginning the adventure we set out for. This is definitely me at times. REI has a good article on the ten essentials. Try a google search "hiking ten essentials"
