One of the first things I was able to do in Independence was celebrate the fourth of July. Being called Independence, this town had to take independence day seriously. On the third, they had a live band in the park along with a fire. On the fourth of July, they had a parade that shut down the 395 for a few hours, meaning anyone driving through had to take a detour around the main highway. Our hotel being right on the main street made it very easy to watch for us. I was able to watch with one of the owners and one of the managers, as seen in the first picture. That night, as per a usual fourth of July celebration, they had a deep pit barbeque full of amazing food along with fireworks at the airport.

Two Summers ago in 2019, I applied and was accepted for a business intern in Independence, California at the Winnedumah hotel. After much deliberation, due to the job of me cold calling doctors all day that I was still doing, I felt like things would not get worse and it would be fun to live in the Eastern Sierras. I was able to live in the hotel where I had my own room and bathroom. There was also cooked breakfast every morning with food like eggs and pancakes. Independence is one of those small towns that you probably zip through on the 395 without noticing on the way to Mammoth or Yosemite. A town with a population of 669 according to their sign, but only 603 according to google, I got to explore the surrounding areas on my off days and off hours. My upcoming posts will all be about the places I explored while I was there.

A couple of weekends ago, I went to the crystal cove state park cottages with my family. We stayed in a beautiful cottage right on the beach with a fridge, microwave, shower, and beds as part of crystal cove state park in Newport beach, California. We were able to go hiking, swimming, walking on the beach, order dinner, and watch sunsets, all while having a cottage to return to which made for a very fun and unique experience. I even saw some dolphins, snakes, crabs, sea anemones, birds!
