This , as we celebrate the cultures and traditions of Indigenous people, Chief Seattle’s teachings on the interconnectedness of all things provide guidance in our divided time. Even though we may be divided by concepts like political party or nationality, we are, no matter what, all in this together. May we approach our work with this awareness and an awareness of the impacts of our work—on the environment, on the communities in which we work and live, and on ourselves, as one strand in the web.

In our current boom time of misinformation, it’s difficult to have clarity on the past. The stories we’ve been told about the history of indigenous peoples in particular have always been murky, if not completely made up by storytellers colonizing our imaginations. As we honor , one way we do so is by decolonizing our imaginations with the stories of indigenous poets, novelists, and filmmakers. So, today we honor some of our favorite storytellers: poets Joy Harjo and Natalie Diaz, novelists Louis Erdrich and Tommy Orange, and filmmakers Sterlin Harjo and Chris Eyre. Who are your favorite indigenous voices?

How do you define in your organization and set clear priorities? How do you build internal capacity for an equity-focused culture? And how do you deliver on your values to provide tangible equity benefits to the communities you serve?

The American Public Transportation Association's 2024 Transit Equity Report draws from the current state of the practice to assist public transportation providers in fostering greater equity within their communities. We're proud to share the results of our collaboration with APTA on this important effort. View the full report here:

Today is the start of . As we honor the people and progress of the past, let’s also time travel to the future and look back on our present and the history unfolding in it. The movement for trans rights is undeniably the history-making movement of our present. In a time when our culture is so divided, and we all feel rushed to take a position and defend it, can we take a different, more open stance? Can we ask ourselves, “What can I learn? What ideas do I still carry around just because they were handed to me a long time ago.” What would it be like for us to be changed by truly inhabiting another’s perspective, truly feeling another suffering or joy—would it feel like renewal?

This week, the The Village of Ossining, New York (in partnership with EIT InnoEnergy, Nelson\Nygaard, Drop Mobility, Shared Mobility Inc, and Cityfi) launched Project MOVER, providing 50 e-bikes for residents and visitors of Ossining, with the goal to expand to 300 e-bikes throughout Ossining and several surrounding rivertowns in Westchester County. The pilot, funded by NYSERDA’s Clean Transportation Prize program, offers affordable mobility that can operate easily over Ossining’s hilly terrain for the Village’s predominately low-income Latino and Black population. It will also advance Ossining’s goal of becoming the greenest village in the nation by increasing bike and transit trips and decreasing driving trips and carbon emissions. For more information about the pilot, visit projectmoverbikeshare.com or check out the Project MOVER page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554796141044.

This year, , commemorating passage of the 19th Amendment and women’s right to vote, has special significance, as the first woman of color is nominated for president by a major party. Women’s equality can take many different forms—from representation at the executive level (and every level) to pay equity to one’s sense of freedom and safety merely walking down the street. As an organization founded and sustained through women leadership, we strive for gender equality in its many forms. On this , we’re sharing a recent article by Associate Principal Meghan Skornia, AICP that explores the social indicators of walkability and what we as planners and engineers can do to improve gender equality in our streets and public spaces. https://www.nelsonnygaard.com/ideas/social-indicators-of-walkability

As we celebrate on the anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the urgent need for accessible transportation solutions continues to grow. Ride-hailing is a viable solution for wheelchair users who rely on wheelchair-accessible vehicles to transport them and their wheelchairs to where they need, or simply want, to go. Our Roadmap offers policy & programmatic solutions to expand access to on-demand WAV rides. Check it out here:

While transit agencies offer paratransit service as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the manner defined over 30 years ago, many riders find it inefficient and not suited to their needs now. Both transit agencies and riders are calling for more accessible transportation option...

Each summer, we’re fortunate to work with some of the brightest planners and engineers in the country at the very start of their careers. The experience sparks new growth—both for our interns and the firm. One of our current interns, Gina Pryciak, puts it well: “It seems like creative new solutions are always being developed, and innovative tools are always in the works. It was definitely a surprise to get to work on a task that didn’t have a clear path because it had not been done before—a learning process for everyone along the way!” Immense gratitude for all the dedication, innovation, and camaraderie our interns have brought us this summer.

Often the loudest objections to new housing developments focus on traffic and parking. But more neighbors doesn’t have to mean more traffic. Nelson\Nygaard’s Christopher Forinash shares his perspective on the role of transportation professionals in solving the current housing crisis.

In cities, suburbs, and towns across the country, we have a crisis of housing supply and price. How did we get here?

It is often taught that African American art represents a subset of American art, but in many ways Black artists were the innovators who created what we think of as distinctly American art. Even as Black artists were silenced, their influence resonated in the most celebrated venues of music, literature, and visual art. Simultaneously drawing upon ancient traditions and forging new forms, their work has become the rhythm, the language, and the look of how we, as Americans of all backgrounds, express ourselves, find beauty, and connect with one another. What an immense gift we celebrate this !

Since 2015, we've worked with Expedia Group to provide their staff with flexible and sustainable commute options. In this piece by Perkins&Will, hear about how Expedia has adapted to recent shifts in commuting to meet the changing needs of their employees.

To get a glimpse of what’s coming just over the horizon, we profiled four emerging mobility technologies and how they’re being used in cities around the world.
