Each summer, we’re fortunate to work with some of the brightest planners and engineers in the country at the very start of their careers. The experience sparks new growth—both for our interns and the firm. One of our current interns, Gina Pryciak, puts it well: “It seems like creative new solutions are always being developed, and innovative tools are always in the works. It was definitely a surprise to get to work on a task that didn’t have a clear path because it had not been done before—a learning process for everyone along the way!” Immense gratitude for all the dedication, innovation, and camaraderie our interns have brought us this summer.

Often the loudest objections to new housing developments focus on traffic and parking. But more neighbors doesn’t have to mean more traffic. Nelson\Nygaard’s Christopher Forinash shares his perspective on the role of transportation professionals in solving the current housing crisis.

In cities, suburbs, and towns across the country, we have a crisis of housing supply and price. How did we get here?

It is often taught that African American art represents a subset of American art, but in many ways Black artists were the innovators who created what we think of as distinctly American art. Even as Black artists were silenced, their influence resonated in the most celebrated venues of music, literature, and visual art. Simultaneously drawing upon ancient traditions and forging new forms, their work has become the rhythm, the language, and the look of how we, as Americans of all backgrounds, express ourselves, find beauty, and connect with one another. What an immense gift we celebrate this !

Since 2015, we've worked with Expedia Group to provide their staff with flexible and sustainable commute options. In this piece by Perkins&Will, hear about how Expedia has adapted to recent shifts in commuting to meet the changing needs of their employees.

To get a glimpse of what’s coming just over the horizon, we profiled four emerging mobility technologies and how they’re being used in cities around the world.

Our streets and sidewalks, our transportation systems, our public places—these are the spaces where we assert our rights. They belong to all people and their design should promote the wellbeing and dignity of all.

As the urgent need for accessible transportation solutions continues to grow, ride-hailing is a viable solution for wheelchair users who rely on wheelchair-accessible vehicles to transport them and their wheelchairs to where they need, or simply want, to go. Our Roadmap offers policy & programmatic solutions to expand access to on-demand WAV rides.

While transit agencies offer paratransit service as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the manner defined over 30 years ago, many riders find it inefficient and not suited to their needs now. Both transit agencies and riders are calling for more accessible transportation option...

We believe streets are for all people. With this in mind, we strive to create transportation systems that are equitable, sustainable, and safe. As we honor the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we recognize the important role planners and engineers have in preventing road traffic deaths and injuries. And we're sharing the work of a city and community that have made tremendous progress toward making their streets safe for all.

As we honor , we remember the more than 500 Indigenous people who die every year from vehicle crashes, a rate more than double that of white Americans. The historical disinvestment in safe multimodal infrastructure and public transit in Indigenous communities means that today it is more dangerous for Indigenous children to ride their bikes or for elders to walk to the grocery store. As we celebrate the rich heritage of Indigenous peoples this month, we keep these victims of traffic violence and mobility injustice in our thoughts.

“At the core of ETOD is the tenet that new transit infrastructure should be accompanied by policies and strategies to mitigate displacement of existing residents and create economic opportunity for all Austinites to thrive.”

The document develops a framework for ensuring that the most vulnerable and low-income residents benefit from investments in public transit and new housing and amenities.

The festivities of Juneteenth—parades, street parties, and cookouts—remind us that our streets and public spaces are where we celebrate our freedoms and where we stand up for them. Today and every day is a good time to ask how we can make our streets and public spaces safer for Black people to move through, to linger in, to protest, to live in joy.

01/06/2023

In the past month, we’ve seen passage of some of the most extreme, discriminatory legislation against LGBTQ+ Americans. As campaigning ramps up, we’re likely to see more scapegoating and further attempts to deny people of their human rights in order to win political points. These cynical actions by state legislatures and governors will have life-altering consequences for the people they target, particularly trans and non-binary youth. We are as alarmed as you. We also believe these attacks on LGBTQ+ rights are up against a far more fundamental and lasting truth about what it means to be human than today’s passing trends in intolerance. We believe there’s nothing more fundamental to being human than being who you are and loving who you love. We’re big fans of that, in fact.

We may be a transportation planning and engineering firm, but we know our work is about more than getting from point A to point B. It’s about how the decisions, actions, and investments we make in our communities impact the life of our communities, making them more sustainable, more equitable, and more safe—for all people. We try, in our own way (our joyful, nerdy, and, yes, relentless way), to keep these values front and center in all we do. As we celebrate Pride Month and the immense contributions of our LGBTQ+ teammates past and present working toward this mission, we’re investing in the communities where we live and work by making a gift to the Equality Federation Institute, an organization that builds state-based leadership and resiliency to advance pro-LGBTQ+ policies and defeat anti-LGBTQ+ policies from the ground up.

The curb is where it all happens. The City of Bellevue, Washington's draft Curbside Management Plan, now available for public review, sets the standard for a practical toolkit that's visually engaging, easily understandable, and puts people and community values first.

“The plan has been molded and shaped... to provide city leaders a toolkit for how to move forward with rethinking how those valuable spaces function to achieve broader city goals, like improved safety, vibrancy, and increased transit ridership.” https://www.planetizen.com/news/2023/05/123556-bellevue-issues-curb-management-plan

View the plan here:https://bellevuewa.gov/sites/default/files/media/pdf_document/2023/Bellevue_CMP.pdf

The plan reorients the city’s priorities from vehicle throughput and parking to transit, bike infrastructure, and other public amenities.

As we put on our helmets for , we're thinking about how for some, biking to work isn't just a fun option but may be the only option or the best of not many or not great options.

We know that biking is good for people's wellbeing and that more bikes and less cars leads to a heathier planet. But in places without good (or any) bike infrastructure, biking can both feel and be unsafe. At the same time, for historically underserved communities introducing bike infrastructure may bring fear of eventual displacement.

So, to all the regular bike commuters--and you newbies!--we salute you, and we commit to bringing our best listening skills and our best equity centered planning expertise to work with your communities to design the kinds of safe transportation systems that you want and need.

This , we celebrate our AAPI teammates, who lead with both vision and impact to make our future a more livable one. From Hawai'i to Hoboken, they help cities reduce their GhG emissions, improve access to jobs for underserved communities, and make streets safer for kids to walk and bike to school. Their leadership connects us to our own sense of hope and moves us forward.
