Holland Rose was the Wyatt Earp of the Smokies....till moonshiner, "Babe Burnett, blew him away with a shotgun on Brush Creek in 1920.

General Winfield Scott, Old Fuss and Feathers, stayed at the home of Joseph and Katherine Deck Welch during the Cherokee removal of 1838.

A dear friend of mine who consistently hikes alone into the far reaches of the back of beyond shared a story with me that fits the attached picture like a glove.
My friend was alone on the trail, miles into the forest. Far ahead of him on the trail he was lightly shocked to see the figure of a man staring back at him. He never slowed his stride, and the man didn't budge for several seconds, then, as he was getting close enough to actually speak to the stranger, the stranger stepped behind a tree and out of sight. This was the first time my friend felt uncomfortable, so instead of continuing along the trail, which would put him mere feet from where the stranger was very obviously hiding, instead he made a wide berth through the forest....keeping the tree in sight though. Within seconds he could see behind the tree where the bizarre man had hidden, and there was no man, but there was a stone. My friend got back on the trail and went to the tree. Where the man had disappeared was a gravestone, a single gravestone.

It was in front of fires like these, in rooms like these, insulated with newspapers and void of all modern convenience that legends were passed down, ghost stories were told, screams of Mountain Lions were heard, babies were rocked and coffins were displayed. Join me on a Lost in Time Historic Ghost Tour for a 21st Century continuation. Below are our June dates. Don't miss out. Our May tours have been excellent.
