Watching the transport of the space rocket by train is one of the greatest moments of the tour which you can enjoy only during the 5-day Baikonur tour. Also, this is the only time you can be very close to the rocket (a few ten meters) and enjoy its huge size.

Space shuttle “Buran” made its only flight on 15th November 1988, and the program was later shut down. On the other hand, thanks to this, Baikonur city had another step of development: new districts were constructed, infrastructure widened; a huge aerodrome built on the cosmodrome for landing of “Buran” still receives aircrafts of any class, express deliveries of large-size spare parts, satellites and other equipment.

Important part of Baikonur hisotry was the construction of the permanent orbit station “Mir” that later turned into the first international space station. Mir was visited by the astronauts from the USA, Japan, EU and other countries. It was sent on its course on 20 February 1986; the base module of the “Mir” station was delivered to the orbit by the rocket-carrier “Proton-K” from the Baikonur cosmodrome, followed by six housing and scientific modules. It had been serving on the Earth orbit for 15 years instead of initially planned 5, giving a foundation for building International Space Station (ISS).

✈️ Air Force finally retires 8-inch floppies from missile launch control system 🇺🇸

Five years ago, a CBS 60 Minutes report publicized a bit of technology trivia many in the defense community were aware of: the fact that eight-inch floppy disks were still used to store data critical to operating the Air Force's intercontinental ballistic missile command, control, and communications network❗️

The system, once called the Strategic Air Command Digital Network (SACDIN), relied on IBM Series/1 computers installed by the Air Force at Minuteman II missile sites in the 1960s and 1970s.

Those floppy disks have now been retired. Despite the contention by the Air Force at the time of the 60 Minutes report that the archaic hardware offered a cybersecurity advantage, the service has completed an upgrade to what is now known as the Strategic Automated Command and Control System (SACCS), as Defense News reports. SAACS is an upgrade that swaps the floppy disk system for what Lt. Col. Jason Rossi, commander of the Air Force’s 595th Strategic Communications Squadron, described as a “highly secure solid state digital storage solution.” The floppy drives were fully retired in June.

eXplore Space Age and the whole rocket science for the best price ever 🚀

The world’s first and largest space launch facility built by the Soviets in the 1950’s. Sputnik, the world’s first satellite was launched from this cosmodrome in 1957, followed by the first human space flight with cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin onboard the "Vostok" space shuttle on April 12th, 1961. Since then, over 1 200 space rockets were launched into the universe from this base and it still has a busy schedule. It is managed by the Russian space agency Roscosmos (that leases a territory of almost 7000 sq. kilometers from Kazakhstan) until 2050. Almost every month there is a spaceship launch which you can be a part of! Taking tour to Baikonur with our local guide and space expert and visiting the facilities and objects that were used for space exploration in the past, makes these days spent in the Kazakh desert a once-in-a-lifetime experience that only a few people a year can cherish!
