Change is hard. Ho***rs and NASCAR have parted ways. Ho***rs has sponsored the #9 Chase Elliott car for many years. During racing season if Chase Elliott won a race, the next day you could get a FREE plate of Wings with the purchase of ten other Wings at Ho***rs. If he finished 2-10 in a race then you could get FREE Fried Pickles with the purchase of a beverage. I'd watch the NASCAR races to see if I would get Wings or Pickles the next day. Over the years I got my share of both. My winning streak has come to an end. So it goes.

The girls will be so disappointed. I'll have to drown my sorrows in a plate of Wings this week.

Slim Chickens, Montgomery, AL July 2, 2024

Retirement has its advantages. Mrs. Bunny and I do a bit of traveling to see our sons who live away from Montgomery in Georgia and Florida. We are exposed to a wide variety of dining options on the road that are not available at home. And since Montgomery is where restaurants come to die, the chances of cool restaurants arriving and thriving are small. Remember Steak ‘n Shake? I’ve eaten at Steak ‘n Shakes all over the US and was thrilled when four opened in our area… Montgomery, Prattville and Auburn. Years later they’re gone. The local populace will swarm like locust at the opening of a new restaurant in town and the enthusiasm lasts for a few weeks… until the next new restaurant pops up and the swarm moves over there. There were days when you couldn’t get in the double drive-through line at Whataburger but now they are down to one lane and lots of available parking. I place online orders at Whataburger and pick them up in front of the store without seeing other pesky customers. Same with Guthrie’s in EastChase… couldn’t get near the place but now you have no competition in the drive-through. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Mrs. Bunny and I have had meals at two locations of Slim Chickens in Panama City when we visit our son down there. Great when they’re in the area but I won’t drive four hours for a chicken dish that I could get mostly anywhere locally. The east end of EastChase Boulevard has become Chicken Corner with Guthrie’s, Bojangles, Popeye’s, Milo’s (they have tasty chicken tenders) and now Slim Chickens (whose app works).

I waited a few weeks after Slim Chickens opened to give them time to settle in. Tonight I placed an app order for Mrs. Bunny and me… Chicken Sandwiches, Fries and Jar Desserts. We’ve had these in Panama City and they’re basic menu items which are easy to prepare. I announced my app order at the drive-through menu board and worked my way around to the pickup window. Order was hot, fresh and ready for retrieval. The driveway is arranged for easy in and out via the lighted intersection next to Mickey D’s. I made it home to Mitylene in short order.

These Chicken Sandwiches were mighty tasty and are customizable with sauces and cheeses. You can get grilled or fried chicken in a variety of sauces to individualize your sandwich. The Chicken was hot and tasty, Mrs. Bunny liked the pickles. The Fries were unspectacular but firm. Next time I’ll get the Fried Okra. The jar desserts, which are served in a souvenir Mason jar, are made onsite. We split one Strawberry Cheesecake and one Chocolate Brownie Pudding.

Slim Chickens Montgomery is located at 9035 EastChase Parkway in Montgomery at the eastern end of the parkway. You can enter from Chantilly Parkway at the Sleep Inn or just past McDonald’s and exit at the light next to McDonald’s to the left or use their dedicated exit to go west. Order in the app, online, at the drive-through or choose indoor or outdoor dining. We’re thrilled to have Slim Chickens just across the street from us and we look forward to enjoying Chicken & Waffles, Wraps and Salads.

My order of limited edition Red/White/Blue Bagels from New Yorker Bagel arrived today just in time for Independence Day. Bagels arrived! I order mine fresh from New Yorker Bagels with two-day FedEx shipping included. So that Mrs. Bunny can safely slice these bagels, I bought her a good slicer. Bread knives can be dangerous.

Cut while cold, heat (toaster or oven), add cream cheese and enjoy!

James Gregory, the "Funniest Man In America". has died. I attended many of his performances over the years from the time he first started doing comedy shows in Montgomery in 1985. He would perform around Montgomery and in Birmingham at the Stardome Comedy Club. I was usually successful in visiting with James before his shows as he sipped on a club soda in the bar. And we'd always speak with him on the way out of the clubs as we were buying the latest merchandise and CDs. James performed comedy based upon his rural upbringing and life's observations. It was always great to hear him on the radio with Bob & Tom, Rick And Bubba or John Boy And Billy. James was always funny... the funniest. So it goes.

James Harold Gregory, Jr., known among fans as “The Funniest Man in America,” died Thursday.

There's a traffic hazard at the northbound I-85 exit 11 (Mitylene) at the intersection. A woman with two small children in tow is running in and out of traffic begging for money. I'm not sure what the current disposition of panhandling in the city but this is not a safe condition and this woman is endangering her children.

Niffer’s Place, Auburn, Alabama October 7, 2023

Following a day of grandson sports in metro Atlanta, dinner time occurred about the time we hit Auburn on the return trip. One seven-year-old flag football game and one four-year-old soccer game at the same complex followed by a Chick-Fil-A lunch, then on to a seven-year-old baseball game at a nearby baseball multi-park. It was a hectic morning for the grandsons, their Mom and Dad and both sets of grandparents. Mrs. Bunny and I are fortunate that we have the time to travel to see our grandsons and their parents. My Father traveled on assignment with the US Air Force resulting in grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who lived on the other side of the continent and it was rare to see them to spend quality time as my brother, sister and I grew up. Virginia, Missouri, Oklahoma and California are not in close proximity and required days in the car or a plane ride to get to. Now we have the Interstate Highway System and distant places are just a relatively brief car ride away… at least for our Georgia and Florida trips.

I’ve been busy these past few weeks redeeming birthday specials from restaurants who offer such programs. Free here, discounted there, I signed up for all though I rarely get to redeem a few which are either too far from home to be practical or have unachievable requirements. Stardome Comedy Club in Birmingham offers free admission for up to ten people “on my birthday” but these days I don’t know ten people local to Birmingham to join me. The Juicy Crab in Montgomery will give me a free birthday meal if I come in with at least six of my paying friends. Can’t think of six friends who would enjoy such a meal. Niffer’s Place in Auburn offers a $10 discount on meal within a few weeks of my birthday. Somehow I find my way to be in Auburn every year to dine at Niffer’s Place because the cost of the fuel just to drive 100 miles there and back would not justify the trip. Oh, well, since I’m here…

Mrs. Bunny and I arrived before 5pm with a good chance to beat the dinner crowd and found that our normal parking spaces have been fenced off for the construction of a catering kitchen expansion. We found a parking space by the door, went in and were seated in the back dining area between competing football games on the wall-mounted televisions. Auburn had a bye week so the customers were being entertained by an even match of Alabama and Texas A&M (it was tied for most of the time we were there). I’ve had some of the many specialty sandwiches and burgers so I try to order something new to me each time. This evening Mrs. Bunny ordered a basic Cheeseburger with Fries and I had the Black N’ Blue Bacon Cheeseburger (Cajun spices, bleu cheese crumbles, bacon and mozzarella) with Cajun Tater Tots. Our server brought our drinks and the burgers were presented a few minutes later. Mrs. Bunny and I enjoy hot and juicy burgers fresh from the grill and these had a good crunch and finish. As the two football teams beat on each other we sat and quietly finished our burgers. Niffer’s offers many types and styles of burgers, salads and wraps and it’s all good… which is why our two sons made frequent trips for lunch and dinner there with friends while they were attending Auburn University. It’s a great place to sit, relax and enjoy great food. We settled up with our server who is a Nursing student at Auburn, then headed out to return home. We drive through campus and comment on how things changed in the fifty years since we were students. Other things remain the same such as groups of students enjoying themselves on the lawn in front of Samford Hall.

I'm always looking for something new to try from our local restaurants... menu specials and such. Chick-Fil-A began offering a new sandwich featuring Pimento Cheese on a regular or spicy chicken filet. I had to try this.

Lunchtime on Friday and I was in the area, so I placed my order in the app and headed to the Chick-Fil-A in EastChase. If you use the app you can skip the long line and enter a `special` line where you scan a QR code upon arrival and your order is finalized in restaurant. I passed about twenty cars in the two regular lines and drove right up the the QR code sign, and after confirming my order I drove around to the pickup area. I only had to wait a short time for my order to be delivered, hot and fresh.

I got a Deluxe Chicken Sandwich for Mrs. Bunny while I ordered the new Honey Pepper Pimento Sandwich w/ Spicy Filet adding Nuggets and Waffle Potato Fries® (which I got free as an app reward). Mrs. Bunny had just finished giving the lawn a last mow of the season and was ready for a good lunch. She enjoyed her Chicken sandwich. My Pimento Cheese Chicken Sandwich was quite tasty especially with my choice of the Spicy Chicken Filet. We shared the Fries and Nuggets and Mrs. Bunny provided her homemade Brownies for afters.

Stop by Chick-Fil-A and try the Honey Pepper Pimento Sandwich which you can get in regular and spicy versions. I enjoyed my spicy version and will order it again soon.
