Hey gang, I want to share some thoughts .. this is how things work, in the life of a travel advisor:
As we begin to work together I will need information from you to help match you to the trip of your dreams. It might feel weird to you at first, because our conversations are going to be pretty one sided, with me asking A LOT of questions. I will ask you things like, where you have been that you loved? What do you want most out of the trip? I will ask for your family's breakdown, and will want to know the approx. budget I should be looking for that would be ideal. I will ask what type of rooms you want .. if you consider yourselves "beach people" or "pool people" .. if you are "foodies" .. What makes you happy when you are on vacation? What do you look forward to most? Things like if it came down to it would you choose a gorgeous ocean front room in a mid range resort or you would prefer a better resort in a regular room??. ... Lots of questions!
My next step is the research.
This is where I start searching .. seeking out properties that would give you the most of what you are looking for for the "budget" you have conveyed .. checking room availability and pricing.
I may compare several properties that I know will work for you, and then price them out with 2, 3, or more travel suppliers to see who will give you the best rate, perhaps an extra perk, room credit ..etc
During this phase I may come back to you and ask you a few more questions to help me narrow things down ..
After I find what I think is the best value I will present my findings to you, explain what you will get for your money, help narrow down your options until you are comfortable making a decision. It may not happen on this first round. Either the pricing may be out of budget, or you may have decided on a new destination or new dates, etc.. and I have to start the research process all over again...
Hopefully we get to a place where I found the perfect trip for you, and then its time to help you secure your choice! At this point I explain your deposit options and begin the next step which is creating the reservation. Yay! You now have a reservation for the trip of your dreams!
What happens next?
In the time between making the reservation and actually going on the trip, things happen. You may need to cancel your reservation. Or undoubtedly, questions will come up .. you'll wake up one morning wondering, "how many restaurants were on that resort?" or "how to I get my airport transfers again?" or the questions may be more serious - "what happens if my mother gets sick and I cant go?" "What happens if I test positive for covid when I am there?" .. You may need to make a simple or complicated change to the trip. You may need to add a person or move the dates. You may want info on local tours or excursions, or know how to find the best snorkel spot .. etc. etc. etc.
What do you do when these questions come up?
Well of course you contact me!
Answering your questions is part of my job and I am always happy to be there for you!
And who knows, in the time between when you book and when you travel I may notice your room category goes on sale for your dates, or your resort is offering a promo that I can apply, getting you a better rate. I love making these calls .. I feel like a rock star! lol
A few days before your trip, I reach out to you to make sure you are aware of the current travel protocols and to answer any last minute questions.
I will send you a text while you are there to make sure everything is going well and if its not do whatever I can on my end to help. I may need to email the property, call the sales dept, rework the flight home, etc .. whatever you need.
Hopefully you had a wonderful trip and I love chatting with you when you return to get your impressions of everything!

Now, let me first say that in order to be successful at this job, you have to LOVE it. You have to LOVE people, and seeing them happy. BUT the reality is we have to make a living right? We have to earn money. That is the reality. So .. let me explain how we get paid...
Many of us (myself included) do not charge a planning fee.
We do not "hike up" the price we quote you so that you pay more.
We compare our favorite travel suppliers (as a consumer would compare expedia or travelocity etc) to find you the best value, and we are paid commission by the supplier after you travel. .. AFTER you travel ....Yes, one more time .. AFTER you travel!
All the work we do for you is upfront. And unless you are paying a planning fee the agent is doing it before any compensation.
That is why as soon as I hear another agent is involved I walk away. Its called integrity.
You should know how things work, and that we are all working with the same travel suppliers. However not all travel suppliers offer us the same pricing, which is why we "shop" around different suppliers rates. MY preferred travel supplier may be $50 more or less than the quote you got from another agent .. we all have our preferred travel suppliers we like to partner with. That is the difference (if any) you may be quoted by two different agents, not that one agent hiked up your quote to make more money.
And I understand fully that not all travel advisors are equal.
Some are just throwing random cookie cutter quotes at clients that dont fit their needs.
But thats not how I work.
For me, its the details that make the difference, building a relationship with my clients, and understanding your needs.
So unless you are not happy with your current relationship with your travel advisor I would respectfully ask you to stick with one travel advisor.
Understand if you are "price shopping" one advisor against another someone's time is being wasted.
I am a big believer that we are led to work with who we should be working with...
In the end, if another agent is promising you a "better price" than maybe you should book with the, "cheaper agent."
I wont undermine another agent just to get the "sale."
We are all (most) here because we truly love what we do, but we all need to earn a living too...
