We were just outside the amber weather warning area for Storm Éowyn and our home was unscathed, but we came across this tree across the lane when out for a walk in the 'calm after the storm'. To be fair, the tree looked like it was dead already! Hope none of our followers suffered too much from the storm! 🤞

Rhiwargor Waterfall is a fabulous waterfall very close to northern end of Lake Vyrnwy and at the opposite end of the lake to the enormous dam (also worth a visit and a wander). Access to the waterfall parking is via a lovely lakeside drive which itself has various stopping-off points along the way.
The walk to the foot of the falls is undulating and only takes ~15 minutes. Once there, it is flat with a solitary picnic bench. With care and suitable water-shoes, it would be suitable for paddling in the summer.
The entire waterfall comprises a cascade of smaller falls. If you want to ascend, you have to cross the stream. There is no bridge, and whilst crossing was easy in wellies, there are random stepping stones for those wearing walking boots. There isn't a formal path to the top of the falls and the route definitely involves some scrambling and bogginess (a degree of fitness being required), but as you will see, the view from high up is stunning.

The 2 sides of the brook running alongside our property. Firstly, at barely moving summer level and secondly, during the recent combination of Storm Bert and snow-melt. Nothing for us to worry about (though I did get in and remove 5 or 6 sizeable logs which were stuck at the entrance to the culvert below us).

Furniture Stories Number Two...
Quick version: dining chairs poised ready for smart new seat pads.
Background version:
Three dining chairs came with us from the Cotswolds. Unclaimed and unwanted remnants from the estate of a friend's late aunt, they'd languished in a barn, then an open-sided shed for a couple of years, quietly deteriorating.
Our holiday cottage will be for two - so two dining chairs - but the third? Well, we don't have anything for the dressing table in the bedroom...
Working on the "don't ask: don't get" principle... I did just that: "I think Aunt Ruth would be delighted if her chairs will be appreciated in a new life in a new home."
Closer inspection, while cleaning off the dust and bird pooh, revealed what I'd call "historic repairs" on one - bolts, bracing, newer timber spliced into the legs - implying it is significantly older than the other two. This was confirmed by Tim, the restorer I'd already contacted.
So... we now know we have one (much repaired) late 18th Century original and two, more modern, exact copies. All (!) we need do now is find the 'right' dining table for them - but that, as they say, is another story for another time...

Painting Projects & Furniture Stories...
Amidst the conversion work and decorating are furniture projects destined for the #holidaycottage. Some have little stories. This one is one. It's also practical practice getting to grips with an editing app, so comes with credit (and gratitude) to Mr. W for the "now do this..." assistance.
Brief version: a #bookcase for the #readingcorner on the first floor landing.
Rambling version: Back when I lived in the Cotswolds, this "future-firewood" was abandoned in a barn for the better part of 20 years - its domed top reprieved it from Death Row several times.
When the time came for The Big Move to Wales, it was always going to come too because "I _am_ going to find somewhere for it.".
It's probably pine, but - under layers of custy, blistered, and peeling soupy varnish - there were traces of a burr veneer so it may, once, have had aspirations to finer status. Absolutely no idea of its age, but I'd hazzard a guess at early 20th century.
There's missing skirting and the flimsy back to replace before it goes under the brush for a smart paint job and a refreshed life.

COMING UP......SANTA SPECIALS AT BALA LAKE RAILWAY on 7 & 8 December 2024
Due to popular demand an extra train has been arranged for 5:30pm on 7 December (with some seats available as at 19 November). All other trains on both days are fully booked - all 14 of them!.
Trains will depart from Llanuwchllyn Station (LL23 7DD) on a journey down the line to Santa’s Grotto where the children will meet Santa and receive a gift. Adults receive a mince pie and a glass of sherry or a hot drink. The round trip takes 45 minutes.

Our Mr Watts is a volunteer for Bala Lake Railway, a narrow gauge railway in north Wales. Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia).
