Do you ever accidentally open your front camera and just... 🤓?

This groundhog at the RMSC Cu***ng Nature Center has only good angles. Groundhogs, or woodchucks, are considered a species of marmots. They are in the same family as squirrels, with similarly adorable teeth.

that their upper incisors are constantly growing? They grow about 1/16 of an inch a week. This is why they are constantly gnawing on things like trees, grass, and roots to keep their teeth at manageable lengths.

This is a common spider in the Finger Lakes, most often called the yellow garden spider. The females are huge. This is the smaller male. They like to make webs across trails and paths to catch grasshoppers and other fairly large insects. If you happen to miss the warning zig-zag in the web and walk into the web, just back out slowly and try to go around. The spiders are never interested in humans.

One of our campers recently discovered this zipper spider at Baltimore Woods. This black and yellow spider created a beautiful web with a zigzagging “zipper” pattern which it is named for. The reason for creating this pattern is unknown, but one theory is that it attracts insects and keeps birds from flying into its web. Regardless of the reason, the zipper spider is an artist!

Our 10th Annual Garden Party fundraising event is just one week away and we want to highlight our generous event sponsors who help make it all possible. The Lake House on Canandaigua is just steps away and a favorite neighbor of ours! We love having such amazing accommodations for people traveling to our region. The Lake House guests are immersed in the best of what New York State has to offer when they walk over to our grounds. From tastings in our 100% NYS tasting room, to taking an exciting culinary or beverage class, to enjoying the view over dinner from our Café … we love being a destination that The Lake House recommends to their guests.

We raise a glass (of NYS wine, of course) to The Lake House on Canandaigua and their support. We look forward to celebrating with you at our 10th Annual Garden Party on Tuesday, August 23rd. 🌿
