Zeppole di San Giuseppe 😇🧁

Today all across Italy we celberate “San Giuseppe” also known as Father’s day, dedicated after Joseph, Jesus’s father.

During this day it’s tradition to have with your family some “zeppole”, a fried pastry filled with chantilly cream and topped with an under spirit cherry.

Among all the legends, including the one in which Joseph, during his escape in Egypt together with the family, was frying zeppole, amongs other jobs that he was doing.

Zeppole are originally produced in southern Italy, particularly in Campania’s region, even though nowdays it’s easy to find them in any pastry shop or bakery across Italy, around the 19th of March.

The origins of this pastry goes back during Romans time when pagans were celebraing Liberalia on the 17th of March. After that emperor Teodosio tye III banned all the pagan cults, this celebration was assimilated together catholic traditions and becoming San Giuseppe.

“A Carnevale ogni scherzo vale” 🎭

Last Sunday, we took a detour through the charming village of Castelnuovo di Sotto, just a 2-minute drive from Reggio Emilia. This village has been celebrating Carnival with “carri,” large structures made of steel and papier-mâché, since 1885.

Throughout the year, the community comes together to design and create various thematic moving structures that are showcased in the parade every weekend from the beginning of Carnival until the day before Lent.

The term “Carnevale” in Italian literally means “remove the meat,” signifying the period when people prepare for the time leading up to Easter. Carnival in Italy originated as a final celebration before entering a season of penance and reflection.

Emilian Mountains 💚

Last week, we kicked off our itinerary in the heart of the Apennines National Park with Erika and Rose. This trip has been redesigned to provide our international travelers with even more unique and authentic experiences connected to local history and food culture.

We explored the production of Parmigiano Reggiano from the mountains, guided by Marcello’s expertise.

We bravely climbed the “Pietra di Bismantova,” a limestone rock formation that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

After a scenic drive, we re-fueled at the charming farm of , which serves the best of local cuisine using farm-to-fork ingredients.

In the afternoon, we delved into the history of Queen Matilde of Canossa and explored her castle, where in 1046, Balsamic Vinegar was invented. In the “acetaia” located right under the castle, Tolmino explained how to prepare the “black gold” from Emilia-Romagna.

The 2025 season has just begun! 🚀

✈️ As soon as we returned from our winter break, we welcomed our first foodie travelers of the season, eager to learn about the making of our region’s iconic products.

🧀 Juliet and her sisters visited us from New York, and together we toured the production of Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, and Traditional Balsamic Vinegar.

😍 It was wonderful to reconnect with local producers and indulge in authentic local flavors.

💥 Although 2025 has just started, we foresee a bright new season ahead, and we look forward to welcoming travelers from around the world to Emilia-Romagna.

Reggio Food and Walking Tour 🍝 🇮🇹

🇭🇰 A few days ago, we hosted a tailor-made full-day tour with a lovely group of professionals visiting Reggio Emilia from Hong Kong.

🧀 The itinerary showcases the best that this charming city in Emilia-Romagna has to offer, featuring a wealth of culinary experiences, history, and culture.

🍷 In the morning, we explored the production of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, traditional balsamic vinegar, and local wines, including Lambrusco and the underrated Spergola sparkling white.

🍝 We enjoyed a fabulous lunch at Osteria Tabarin, featuring gnocco fritto, local cured meats, chizze, and giardiniera salad. We savored tortelli pasta filled with pumpkin, ricotta, and spinach.

🇮🇹 In the afternoon, we delved into Reggio Emilia’s rich history with a walking tour across its piazzas, visiting some of the most iconic architectural sites. The town hall proudly displays the first tricolore flag of Italy, which dates back to 1797.

🏛️ We explored the foundation site of the city, dating back to 187 B.C. during the Roman era, and we were mesmerized by the Musei Civici collection, which showcases fossils, ancient animals, and modern photographs that highlight the natural history and artistic spirit of this town.

🦁 Buon San Prospero - Patron Saint of Reggio Emilia 🦁

🌰 Today, the people of Reggio Emilia gather in the charming city center to explore the markets and indulge in seasonal local foods such as roasted chestnuts, apple fritters, and “castagnaccio,” a type of pie made from chestnuts.

🙏 But why do we celebrate San Prospero? Legend has it that around 490 A.D., he was the bishop of Reggio Emilia and saved the city from invading barbarians who were plundering the surrounding lands. The saint prayed for a dense fog to rise, which concealed the city from the attackers. Frightened by this miracle, the barbarians retreated without conquering Reggio Emilia.

🌬️If you've noticed some foggy days recently, don’t be surprised! It’s a reminder of the spirit of San Prospero. Happy Patron Saint’s Day to everyone in Reggio Emilia!

Autumn is the perfect season to explore the Apennines mountain range! 🍂🌰

Together with David and Lynn, we ventured into the Emilia-Tuscany National Park, which showcases stunning colorful foliage this time of year, making it an ideal season for chestnut picking.

We began our day exploring the production of Parmigiano Reggiano and traditional balsamic vinegar. Then, we enjoyed a scenic drive through the Apennines to reach the farm run by .

The owner, Filippo, introduced us to the farm-to-fork philosophy and shared insights about his free-range pigs, from which he produces delicious cured meats.

We took a lovely walk through the hundred-year-old chestnut forest, originally planted by Queen Matilde di Canossa during the Middle Ages.

Filippo treated us to a bottomless lunch made with organic products, highlighting traditional dishes from Emilia-Romagna, including tigelle, erbazzone, and tortelli.

Tailor-made tour in Parma 🐷

Thank you to Fenella and her sister, visiting from Brisbane, for choosing AndomYA as your operator to explore the Antica Corte Pallavicino, known for its iconic production of Culatello, in Polesine Parmense.

Together with Fenella, we designed a unique itinerary to discover the history of cured meats, savor local recipes, and immerse ourselves in nature with a walk along the Po River.

The Culatello and the “Anolini in Brodo” from Hostaria del Maiale in Polesine were absolutely outstanding. Thanks to the guided tour of the museum, we gained a deeper understanding of the ancient culture surrounding Culatello production.

The Isola Giarola park offered stunning views of the Po River, its wildlife, and natural beauty, and the walk certainly aided our digestion!

Bologna for foodies 🇮🇹 🍝 😋

Here are some memories from last summer’s exclusive tailor-made Bologna Foodie & Walking Tour with the Roggerman family visiting from Brooklyn, New York.

Bologna, the captivating capital of Emilia-Romagna, is the heart of Italy’s food valley, home to over 40 globally renowned food products. This city is not only the birthplace of Europe’s first university but also one of the most enchanting destinations in Europe, brimming with a lively social and cultural scene.

Alongside Ellen, Kris Tate, and Vera, we dove into Bolognese traditional cuisine and history, following an itinerary that showcased local products, iconic spots, and hidden gems known only to locals.

We began with some local pastries and then savored different types of pasta—tortellini, tagliatelle, and more. Our travelers particularly enjoyed “tigelle” with mortadella, a delightful discovery among the Italian street food scene! Last but not least, we indulged in some exquisitely crafted gelato.

In addition to the culinary delights, we explored several fascinating cultural sites in the city center of Bologna, such as the Archiginnasio, the oldest university in Europe, and the “Compianto sul Cristo Morto,” an artwork rich in pathos created by the masterful artist Nicolò dall’Arca.

Bologna truly impressed our travelers with its rich food and cultural scene. Send us a message to inquire about a customized tour!

It’s been a bit since our last post, but we’ve been super busy welcoming travelers from all over the world to our beautiful region.

Here are some fun moments from the season. We want to share the cooking class experience we set up for the Roggerman family, who came all the way from Brooklyn, New York.

We teamed up to whip up an amazing lunch featuring some of the best dishes from Reggio Emilia. We made Erbazzone, Tortelli Verdi, and Torta di Riso—you name it!

Opening our home, working together on the dough and ingredients, and finally enjoying the meal was such a cool experience. It really brought together life in New York and in Reggio Emilia.

Ellen, Kris, Vera, and Tate were awesome cooks, and we hope they’ll take what they learned and share it with their friends and family back home.
