A quick trip to Philadelphia for Joseph Bologne’s “The Anonymous Lover. Maybe you have seen “Chevalier “ based on his life. The music was delightful and the cast excellent. The Academy of Music beautiful and grand as always. A full house for this rarity due to Opera Philadelphia’s innovative pricing scheme made possible by the generous support of some exceptional donors.

Happy New Year! I still have a couple of spots available for my upcoming tour to France, which runs from March 29 to April 7, 2025. The focus will be on gardens in Paris, the Loire Valley, and Versailles. We will also visit the private garden of the renowned Baroque music pioneer William Christie in Thiré. The tour begins with Monet’s Water Lilies at the Orangerie in Paris and concludes at his gardens in Giverny. There will also be music, with the chance to attend the opening night performance of Donizetti’s La fille du régiment at the Royal Opera of Versailles. Inaugurated on May 16, 1770, for the wedding feast of the future King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, this extraordinary theater was used only about 40 times before the Revolution.

Boxing Day- Not sure if this is a continuation of the Downton Abbey theme, or the start of the All Creatures Great and Small trail. But since it’s the last day in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, it’s immaterial.

Wi******er is England's ancient capital and the former seat of King Alfred the Great. It was jam-packed with people going to the Christmas markets, and the cathedral was full for a children’s carol service. The novelist Jane Austen died in Wi******er on 18 July 1817 at 41. Her brother Henry, a clergyman, arranged for his sister to be buried in the north aisle of the nave of Wi******er Cathedral. Austen's name never appeared on her books during her lifetime, so fame was not a factor in where she was laid to rest.

Two twelfth-century Medieval churches in the Cotswolds…. First, one for those with a literary bent. It was an impromptu stop suggested by our remarkable driver Robin, en route from Oxford to Upper Slaughter, to visit the Mitford graves at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Swinbrook, Oxfordshire. Nancy, the most famous of the Mitford sisters, along with Diana, Unity, and Pamela, are buried there, as are their parents. There is a plaque to their brother, Tom, who was killed in Burma during World War II inside the church. The second was St. Peter’s in Upper Slaughter which has no memorial to war dead. Upper Slaughter is one of 53 “Thankful Villages” in England and Wales, from which all of its serving personnel returned alive from both of the World Wars.
