Derek P. and Bridget asked,
What type of owls and what regions do the pellets came from? (edit)
--------------------------------
It is good to ask questions. They can question anything if they ask with honesty and respect. Scientists are often curious and ask and speculate a lot.
As per what owl the pellets come from, the barn owl will mostly eat rodents. So the percentage of other things will be small. Other things you may find are bird bones, crawfish, grasshoppers, beetles and other such insect parts. One pellet may have a lot of things that are not rodent, but 100 pellets (or large fragments of pellets) should have few other things. If someone examined the contents of your stomach it should have mostly good food. But sometimes, about all that will be found is candy, potato chips and cake! I would guess that you had been to a birthday party or something similar. Likewise I guess if a lot of bird bones are found, it means a lack of rodents and/or an abundance of birds.
Other owls will eat many other things. A small owl, more insects. A large owl, it has been said, will eat anything it can carry. Such as squirrels, snakes, skunks as well as rodents. In addition they may break many more bones or even digest bones and such. Horned owl type pellets have a lighter color. One last clue is that the most pellets from most owls will crumble easier than barn owl pellets.
What do you think based on the above clues? Have you gone out and found any other pellets and seen or heard the owl? Do you have any owls that roost at your school or one of your homes? Maybe you could find another type of owl pellet. (Be careful of other items and wash your hands or use gloves.)
Thank you,
Brian Andersen
PS; I have collected owl pellets for over 3 decades and you can be assured that I have sent mostly barn owl pellets. Maybe one in 300 may be from some other owl. :)

Do you do a skull count? What type do you find mostly? I realized I did not tell you where they came from. If you find a lot of pocket gophers, those are from the south of CA. Not sure what town. But have them look up Bakersfield. If mostly voles and a few shrews, then most likely from northern states. Have them identify WA, OR and ID. ================ That was fun! ======
