First bus having been flagged off from the Pune to Ahmednagar on 1st June 1948.

It's a story that had a hesitant beginning, with many people then not giving the State Transport (ST) bus service more than a couple of years of existence. Standing today by this milestone of 71 years, its position of strength speaks for itself - 18,449-odd buses, 1,02,000 employees, about 67 lakh citizens utilizing the service daily. Initially it was Bombay State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC), later changing its name to MSRTC with the re-organization of the state.

There were 10 makes of buses in use then - Chevrolet, Fort, Bedford, Seddon, Studebaker, Morris Commercial, Albion, Leyland, Commer and Fiat. In the early 1950s, two luxury coaches were also introduced with Morris Commercial Chassis. These were called Neelkamal and Giriyarohini and used to ply on the Pune-Mahableshwar route. They had two by two seats, curtains, interior decoration, a clock and green tinted glasses..!

Swamynarayan Mandir - Pune.

One of the most prominent features of the heritage of Swaminarayan is temple architecture. The images in the temples built by Swaminarayan are the evidence of the priority of Krishna. All of the temples constructed during his life show some form of Krishna, and all temples since have such worshipable murtis. Today there are over a thousand Swaminarayan temples, spread across five continents.

Swaminarayan also known as Sahajanand Swami, was a yogi, and an ascetic whose life and teachings brought a revival of central Hindu practices of dharma.
Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781 - 1830 CE) was born as Ghanshyam in the tiny village of Chhapaiya near Ayodhya in North India. Renouncing his home at the tender age of 11 after a deep study of Hindu scriptures, He performed an arduous seven year pilgrimage through Nepal, Eastern and Southern India before settling down in the Western state of Gujarat. Appointed as the spiritual successor of His Guru when He was just 21, Bhagwan Swaminarayan asked two boons from the Guru – "If your devotee is destined to suffer a single scorpion bite then let me, instead, suffer the pains of millions of scorpion bites on every pore of my body. And if your devotee is destined to take to the begging bowl then let it be my fate but your devotee should not suffer from want of food and clothing." In 1802, his guru handed over the leadership of the Uddhav Sampraday to him before his death. Sahajanand Swami held a gathering and taught the Swaminarayan Mantra. From this point onwards, he was known as Swaminarayan. The Uddhav Sampraday became known as the Swaminarayan Sampraday.
